Lupines or Lupins (both spellings are correct) are members of the Bean Family, or Fabaceae, which were introduced to Nova Scotia from the Mediterranean as ornamental plants, but which have escaped cultivation to become common in the wild, along roadways & other open spaces. Its relatives, Scotch Broom, Tree, and Laburnum are also introductions from Europe and elsewhere which are poisonous.
Although the Bean Family provides some of humankind's most nutritious food crops- soybeans, for example, fababeans, and chick peas, not to mention legume forage crops such as alfalfa, clover and vetch, it also inflicts a wide variety of toxins on the unwary.
Seeds, pods & young leaves of all the above plants, though toxicity varies amongst species, from part to part in each plant, and with the seasons.
It all depends which plant the hapless victims eat. Lupinine, an alkaloidis the chief poison of Lupines, though they also contain dangerous enzyme inhibitors. The seeds, bark & leaves of Scotch Broom contain a similar toxin, and Laburnum contains an alkaloid toxin similar to nicotine, but smoking it is NOT recommended.
Robina, on the other hand, contains poisonous proteins called lectins, which interfere with food protein synthesis.
Consumption of quantities of seeds by livestock or children. Though livestock seem unaffected by grazing Lupines, for example, their milk becomes poisonous; it is associated with human and animal birth defects
. With children, what causes the trouble is the similarity of all these seeds and pods to those of edible beans & peas. Though Lupine poisoning is rarely fatal, as few as Laburnum beans can kill a child. It is important to explain to children the danger of snacking on the beans of Lupines, ScotchBroom, Robinia & Laburnum. Safer yet, ban snacking on ANY wild seeds or fruit without reference to an adult.
Lupine and Scotch Broom poisoning results in depressed heart and nervous systems, and a consequent sensation of numbness, especially in the feet & hands. In particularly susceptible persons, death can occur from respiratory failure. The lectin in Robiniacauses diarrhoea, which can lead, in turn, to dehydration and shock. On the other hand, Laburnum poisoning is marked by burning sensations in the mouth and abdomen, nausea, drowsiness, headache and fever. In severe cases, the victim may experience hallucinations and convulsions, before slipping into a fatal coma.
