I have not seen any ghosts ,but i did know of 2 haunted houses so they say  one was in amherst  that one i did not see actually but i read the book on it it was called the amherst mystery  it was about a girl named Emily cox and she was haunted by a ghost the house is now torn down and made into a parking lot. The other house i DID see its in albert mines in albert county. some one lives in it now but it was empty for years. Well is at the bottom of a hill and when you stopped at the top of the hill and turn out your lights on the car you could see lights in the windows, But  when you went to see for your self  the windows was boarded up and there was no ecectricity to the house. upon going back up the hill and looking down you saw the lights again. I am a believer in ghosts and wish anyone else has a good story to post it. Any one who knows where i could find that book id love to read it again called THE AMHERST MYSTERY

What does everyone one think a Ghost is? A person come back  from the dead?  Personally I believe that no one can come back or get stuck here. My step grandmother was a Spirit Medium. Which the bible warns about. I know this is not a religious section as such but the bible warns us away from these things. They are demonic forces taking on the form of those who have passed on so that people will look to them for guidance rather than God. (Playing on emotions) Many of the Ghost stories are also about Polterguise. This is demonic. To go into these things will open a door for them into your life.   I personally have been in places where there have been forces a presence, heard them, they have physically touched me at one time infact  slapped me.The only power over these is knowing the Lord Jesus as your saviour and telling them to go in Jesus name, which I did. It was a house I had moved into where gipsies had lived before. They had told me the house had their dead relatives visitng. I prayed in the whole house and told them to leave in Jesus name.  Also a dog came and scratched at my bed when I was staying at a work mates home when I was 20, it was meant to be her dog who had died 2 years before, so they told me the next morning.. I also told that to go in Jesus name.  These things are from the demonic rhealm. I would advise you to stay well away. Being a spirit medium all her life has driven my step grandmother insane. Its all a distraction to get us on the wrong road if we are ignorant of these things.

Gee, Newsong. It's odd that God would leave His Holy Spirit as a comforter if all spirits are demonic! We weren't talking about witchcraft and gypsy-hood here ... just plain old ghosts and haunted houses. And sometimes those things are only as sinister as you make them out to be.

newsong wrote on 9/28/2006 9:08:37 AM :
Yes the Holy Spirit. But there are other Spirits too that are not in anyway Holy.. You know the ones that come when someone plays with a ouji board.?? The bible warns against these things. Read the bible.  Ask your Pastor.  Dont lead others astray if you are working for God. Do not lead them on a wrong path. Serious look into it more. You said you dont really study the bible much, you should then you would know.  Would the Holy Spirit come and slap you hard on the thigh while you are asleep twice and wake you up? Would it come as a dog stracthcing at your bed? The Holy Spirit is here to do what?  Spook us?  Not at all. He is here to lead us into a closer walk with God he is our comforter and guides us into what? All Pure Truth. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. Gods truth. Not lies and deception.  Come into the Light out of all darkness. However harmless it seems to you Ghosts are not dead relatives etc etc.  God Bless!

How dare you judge how much light/darkness I walk in?! You don't know me!

Just because I don't spend 5 hours a day studying my Bible doesn't mean I don't know anything about it, my dear. In fact, I was raised in a private school where we had to memorize a chapter every month. I quite enjoy Biblical debates, and think perhaps you might even find me challenging if we had the time.

My response to this was simply that all ghosts are not sinister! Sometimes things are just what you make of them. Gypsies and ouija believers are just like different forms of religion: they have reasons for what they believe, and you'll find extremists in any group. THIS post was about haunted-house type ghosts: the kind I'll bet you read about when you were a kid. For Heaven's sake, we weren't allowed to own a TV, wear sleeves above our elbows or skirts made of denim, nor listen to music that wasn't Gospel - but we were allowed to read ghost stories!

Whoever started this thread will correct me if I'm wrong, but my take on it was that it was a place for the kind of innocent stories you read about or hear rumors about - nothing sinister.

hey newsong....go suck a lemon. If you want to throw religion in someone's face try doing it to someone who isn't religious. Not someone who scored as high as wwjd on that religion test. Blinkey is a true whatever religion she is...hehe...now go pick on someone else and leave her alone. Stick out tongue [:P]

A Christian Perspective on Ghosts and Hauntings
(With a Special Look at the Television Series: Most Haunted)

?? Spotlight Ministries, Vincent McCann, 2004
www.spotlightministries.org.uk

You are following a team of intrepid paranormal investigators down a dark corridor with nothing but the dim light of a television camera to guide you. You sense the fear mount as you are reminded that people have been murdered in the building that you are being guided around. There is a overwhelming sense that something is about to happen. Suddenly, out of the darkness, a noise shatters the silence. One of the team screams, the camera shakes, and you follow the investigators as they run to make their escape. Such is a typical day in the life of paranormal investigators on the Most Haunted television programme (airing on Living TV and also a popular DVD). The basic theme of the programme consists of the paranormal investigators visiting well known historical sites that have been rumoured to have strange and ghostly goings on .

The most influential member of the Most Haunted team is spiritualist medium Derek Acorah, a very charismatic personality who has the team spell bound as he discloses intricate details, facts, places, events, and people from times past. In addition to all this, throughout the series, there are mysterious noises, things seem to move, and there are images of such things as "orbs of light" captured on film and camera. It is all tense, riveting viewing, but what is really going on? Is it really the activity of ghosts or are there other possible explanations? And what are Christians to make of claims of ghosts and paranormal activity? This article will seek to answer these questions.

In the Most Haunted series Derek Acorah is taken to famous buildings which have a reputation for being haunted. We are told that Derek has no prior knowledge as to where he is being taken to in advance, but despite this, he quickly picks up on past events as he makes his way around each building, getting information from the spirits that inhabit these places. Many people watching this (especially those with a previous predisposition towards belief in ghosts) would conclude that the information being given here is indeed being received from ghostly spirit entities. But are there other explanations? I believe that there are and that people who readily conclude that the only explanation is ghosts should at least take some time out to consider. There are two possible explanations:

Theory 1: A Naturalistic Explanation.
I believe that one of the possible explanations for the facts and intricate details that Derek presents to his viewers about the buildings he visits is that he already has prior knowledge of the buildings he visits beforehand. As a paranormal investigator, and one who already has an interest in well known and allegedly haunted places, Derek could well have a good knowledge of the places he visits. It would therefore be possible for him to have the information about the buildings he visits, even if he doesn???t know where he is going. The information is certainly readily available for those who want to read up on such famous haunted places as The Skirred Inn, Tutbury Castle, The Station Hotel, etc. As well as the histories of such places being available in public libraries, even a simple a word search on the internet reveals many details. When the programme is watched with this explanation in mind, it loses a lot of its mystique.

For example, The Skirred Inn is a pub in South Wales which has a well known history of mass executions in times past. The details of this are easily available to anyone interested enough to research it. Likewise, Tutbury Castle, is another famously haunted building, which even boasts the residence of a famous ghost - Mary Queen of Scots. Again, it is a well known haunted location with a history that is easily accessible. In the series, the castle is even described as place that has "a good history of hauntings" (Phil Whyman, Most Haunted 2. DVD) and a location that has "Too much paranormal activity...reported here to be ignored." (Yvette Fielding, Most Haunted 2. DVD).

Theory 2: A Supernatural Explanation.
Even though the above explanation is one possibility, as a Christian, I do not believe that it is the only one. It may well be that Derek is indeed receiving information from spirit entities, but that these are something other than ghostly spirits of the departed. It is also possible that the information being given is a combination of both Derek???s own memory and messages from spirit entities.

The Bible speaks about the reality of a spiritual realm inhabited by many supernatural spirit entities:

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." (Eph. 6:12).

The Bible also has a lot to say about exactly what such spirit entities actually are and what their purpose is.

Many who are interested in ghosts and hauntings often assume that whenever these spirits speak, the claims that they make about themselves are truthful. Why is such an assumption generally made and rarely ever questioned? Can these spirits be trusted to speak truthfully? Author, Douglas Groothius has observed that even some prominent spiritualist practitioners themselves have recognised the potential of being deceived by untruthful spirits:

"Emanuel Swedenborg, the famous seer of the eighteenth century, was well acquainted with the spirit world, having experienced detailed visions recorded later in book form. Nevertheless, he cautioned those courting the spirits: "When spirits begin to speak with a man, he ought to beware that he believes nothing whatever from them; for they say almost anything. Things are fabricated by them, and they lie... they would tell so many lies and indeed with solemn affirmation that a man would be astonished...if a man listens and believes they press on, and deceive, and seduce." (Samuel M. Warren, A Compendium of the Theological Writings of Emmanuel Swedenborg (New York: Swedenborg Foundation, 1977, p. 618. As quoted in Douglas Groothuis, Revealing the New Age Jesus, p. 210.)

Interestingly, the Bible tells us that the ruler of dark spiritual world, Satan, is the author of lies. Jesus said of this spirit:

"He [the Devil] was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." (John 8:44)

In the episode about the Skirred Inn, in the Most Haunted series, Derek Acorah stresses his belief (as a spiritualist medium) that the Devil does not exist. But if the Bible tells us that the Devil is the father of lies what could be the ultimate lie that he could tell? That he doesn???t exist. By making people believe this he is free to operate unchallenged and unhindered. The real truth is that the Devil does indeed exist. The Bible declares this as do countless people through history who have encountered him and the evil spirits that serve him. Are we really to conclude that all these people were simply lying, or maybe hallucinating? Indeed many of these people did not come from a Christian world view and so the concept of a Devil or demons were not at the forefront of their minds prior to these experiences. However, for those who have become Christians, their faith, and what the Bible says about the Devil and the spirits which are under his command, has enabled them to make sense of their experiences (see, for example,"Stories of Freedom" on this site).

With the above information in mind, those who sit at the feet of spiritualists mediums, and indeed those who claim to receive messages from the spirit world, need to seriously ask themselves exactly who or what it is that is trying to communicate with them. The Bible warns of the very real danger of seductive spirits that will come to deceive people and draw them away from God and into bondage:

"But the Spirit [the Holy Spirit] explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons..." (1 Tim. 4:1).

Orbs of light
On a number of instances in the Most Haunted series, strange orbs and specks of light are picked up by the camera. Of course, these could have a perfectly natural explanation. I personally thought that some of the lights looked like moths, or dust, reflecting off the camera lights. However, I certainly believe that evil spirits can manifest such things. From my own personal experience, before I became a Christian and was interested in such things as ghosts, etc. I witnessed orbs of light myself. There was no apparent logical or rational explanation for where these had come from, but they did appear in the context of a lot of dark supernatural activity (for more on this read My Story). Spirits of the dead, or something else? The Bible gives us a clue:

"...for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light." (2 Cor. 11:14, emphasis added).

The Bible explicitly forbids attempted contact with spirits that pretend to be spirits of the dead (Deuteronomy 18:11). The Bible states that the dead do not have contact with the living (Luke 16:19-31). The reason for this is because such spirits are not spirits of the dead but rather deceitful spirits under the command of Satan. The Bible calls such spirits "demons", "evil spirits", and "unclean spirits". These demonic spirits are familiar with the departed dead whom they seek to imitate. This is why they are able to supply people with intimate details of names, places, and facts. Indeed, Isaiah 29:4 calls such a spirit a "familiar spirit" (KJV).

The bigger plan of demonic spirits is to draw people to become interested in their activity and the signs and wonders they perform. In doing so, they successfully blind people and influence them further away from a relationship with God. It is no accident, or coincidence, that many people who become interested in ghosts and the paranormal will often be led to go on to experiment with other spiritualities such as: tarot cards, astrology, fortune telling and so on. Even Derek Acorah???s own website promotes some of these spiritualities. From these, some people continue their quest for spirituality by going on to deeper and darker forms of occultism. It is a slippery slope downwards (rather than upwards, as people seem to think). This was certainly my own experience prior to becoming a Christian myself, as it has been the experience of many others like me. It is a very subtle and gradual process. Before a person realises what is happening, they are immersed in occult practices and are influenced by the same sprits to become hostile or indifferent to Christ and Christianity. The Bible states that Satan has...

"...blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." (2 Cor. 4:4).

The good news is that people do not have to remain blinded in the darkness. The Bible tells us that we can come into a relationship with Christ who is "the light of the world" (John 8:12) and be free from the fear and control of dark supernatural forces.
