From Toronto to Moncton

wrote on 8/13/2005 8:07:04 PM :
My boyfriend and I are thinking of getting out of this gawd aweful city and settling down in New Brunswick. I'm 27, systems analyst (bilingual) for CIBC and he's a concrete cutter (specialized construction). We've looked around and could both make about 35-40K each and would have a nice nest egg when we arrived. He has family all over New Brunswick, most of mine is in Montreal.

So the questions, how do St. John/Frederickton/Moncton compare for a young couple starting out? What are jobs like, housing costs, car insurance?

Are hearts are set on moving out, now we have to be sensible! Thank you for any input.

I wouldn't recommend Halifax at all, it's starting to become a "big city" now and if you're trying to get away from that, you definitely shouldn't move there.  I would honestly say out of Moncton/Fredericton/ St.John, Moncton is the best city for all of the things you are looking for. Living in Fton is expensive, St.John is a really old dirty city but Moncton is awesome, lots of growth and the cost of living isn't crazy at all!

If your use to Montreal and Toronto, Moncton is going to seem pretty small. Halifax might be the better fit. Not to big not to small.

Hey Sarah and Corey.  I'm Jeff i was born in Toronto and lived there from 71 till 95.  My parents retired and moved down east as well.  Moncton is by far the best  city in the maritimes thats for sure,  Halifax's nick name in mini Toronto and im sure u dont want to go there lol.  One thing ull like about this place is most ppl are quite friendly,  another thing u are going to find quite different is the wages here are lower but they even out compared to ontario.  To prove i lived in Toronto i lived on 3 Helsby Cr. Etobicoke ont  M8W 4V7 phone was 416-259-7750 i lived right near Sherway gardens mall. Anyways hope u guys decide to come down cyas.

I really like halifax. I usually make it down there 2 or 3 times a year. To me the city seams lively and has lots to do. It is a city where there is a multi million dollar house situated within 5 minutes from people living on the street. They appear to have a good transit system and local drivers treat pedestrians with great respect. What I don't like about Halifax is the higher cost of living. I know their cost of living is still way less than Toronto's. But alas as much as I like Halifax I'm always glad to get back to Moncton. It is slower paced but more relaxing. Moncton is the center of the Maritimes and is close to lots of neat places. Moncton is also closer to Riverview and Dieppe than any other city in the world. That has got to be an advantage over Halifax. Moncton's crime rate is a lot lower than Halifax's. Our 58 (I think that is the number) of Tim Horton's are easier to find than the ones in Halifax. If you can survive the shock of going from a big city to a way smaller one Moncton is by far your better choice.

How is being closer to Riverview and Dieppe an advantage over Halifax that makes absolutely no sense. Also there are lots of Tom Hortons in Halifax but who really cares about that anyway. There are a lot more trendie coffee shops in Halifax.

Ugliness is the property of things that are unappealing to the eye and deficient in beauty. Your obvious ominous rumblings of discontent in your life, or situation you find yourself in is what (perhaps) you are referring to as ugly. "Nothing is Ugly but war".

I can't say that Moncton is the most picturesques place on earth bu it has some nice features.  However, in your defence I will say this there are some people who are Ugly. There attitude is Ugly. Their face is Ugly. Their spirit is Ugly and no matter what they shroud themselves in; they are simply just "UGLY"!

I am attracted to people who are intelligent, kind, honest, sincere, and simply just sweet!

Moncton is not the worse place and if you really want to know United States is what is UGLY!

I wanted to get out of Toronto as well when I was in my early 20s but made the biggest mistake of my life going out to the east coast and living in Moncton.  I missed all of the great things I took for granted in Toronto especially the multicultural atmosphere (and the endless variety of great food that came with it) as well as the great opportunities in work and life.  To make my experience worse, I am a visible minority and experienced--on more than one occassion--racism and discrimination while I was over there.  The experience definitely changed my view of Canada.  Be careful, before I moved there, I naively thought that people were nicer out east.  They may be more hospitable in certain circumstances but in reality, people are people, they are basically the same wherever you go.  Having someone be racist with a smile doesn't make it any easier to take.
