Hi,
Seems every job in Moncton besides dishwashing requires french.Sometimes it feels like your living in Quebec.

Very good point! I was actually waiting for someone to make it.

This is what I truly believe. French as a mandatory language has put Moncton back about 5-10 years. Why? Well, its very simple: everything needs to be duplicated, people are often being hired not because of merit, but strictly because they can speak a language.

Business is being hurt in a severe way because the language of the business is not English / French, but ENGLISH.

And I am writing this while English is NOT my mother tongue and I believe in giving opportunities for French culture and language to thrive. Only doing it at the expense of the economy of the region is a very bad idea!

sorry, i didnt answer your question, yeah there are other jobs - call center, WalMart, Sobey's, McDonald's, and Tim Horton's....

but that's just joking, on a more serious note, well, there are jobs for people that speak English only. Don't get discouraged, just keep looking....

I was told because I speak English and not French that I can never gain employment in Moncton at any establishment anywhere...Is this really true or is the person that told me this using it as an excuse not to look for work???

Whosever told you that was lying.  Yes, if you want to work for the government then you must have some French, some. I know many people who are lazy. Yes, lazy. That???s not a word we???re supposed to use these days. The supposedly more insightful terms include, ???fearful,??? ???stuck,??? and ???procrastinating,??? But people want you to be lazy so they will tell you that because misery loves company. Keep looking for work and there is lots of work which does not require speaking French.

I am not lazy at all in fact I hear everything all of you are saying. I do believe that it is hard to find a job because you don't speak french most places besides fast food require french as well. There are some jobs out there but very few because they want to make sure it is fair for everyone who shops who are like us only they can't speak english. I think since we are a bilingal province now that schools need to be bilingal so all children learn both languages. I wish I knew french not just cause it would help me find better jobs but so I could talk with more people.
I am planning on opening my own buiness in moncton and I don't care if my workers can only speak english or french or both because I know how hard it is from the full spectrum. I know what it is like trying to serve someone french who doesn't speak much english it's hard I feel bad because I don't know the language to help them more to make me understand as well. But then I know what it is like ot go somewheres and the people working only speak french and I have no clue on what to do. I don't go against the french nor do I side with the english as my family is both anyway. My view is not everyone can be bilingual...I can't seem to learn the french language some people will be the same for english. What the province needs until the day everyone is mostly bilingal is PATIENCE with eachother!! Not everyone is perfect, as long as we can get along as a society and learn to help eachother then we won't have such a tear back n forth from the english and the french.

i don't think the problem of bilingualism will ever be solved. So, let's say, Moncton becomes fully bilingual (because it is not right now), then there will always be other parts of Maritimes that will be having difficulties with languages. St. John might "want" to become a bilingual city. The reason I said "want" is because it is seldom the wish of people, rather a way for local politicians to bum more money off the feds. We "want" our city to be bilingual => we need more cash for translation of everything => more cash from the provincial and federal budget (and some of this cash will go you know where). A few a fed and happy, many are out of work and frustrated.

So the problem will persist. It is not a matter of languages, rather big politics on a small scale.

Good for you, good luck!

But having said the stuff above (prev post), I believe what one should do is try to learn French (or English). Both are great languages to know and will contribute to your personal growth and development no matter where you live and work.

Moncton is a great place to learn French because you see translation everywhere. You can literally walk around and learn.

Here is my 3cents. It has nothing to do with lazy, in your case. Many other people will try to deter you from what your goals are by giving you the wrong information. I would suggest you go out and find out for yourself, what is available to you, and perhaps, you may share that with the rest of us.

Jackie, thank you for the reply....I suspected I was told a lie as an excuse why he couldn't get a job and now you have helped me realize that.

If you are a self-starter, you may want to consider starting your own business. As a business owner, you would be able to set my own hours - You get to pick which 12 hours of the day you want to work!

Nevertheless, for many it is a dream of freedom and riches not hard work. You can pay yourself what you want and you can write off many expenses that would normally be paid for using after tax dollars.

Everyone who starts his or her own business is taking a risk. However, there is a big difference between building a business and being self-employed. When you are self-employed, you may only need a handful of customers to keep you busy year round. The advantage of self-employment is that you can develop a steady revenue stream faster. The drawback is that you will always depend on yourself for income; when you build a business, you are ideally creating an entity that will eventually be able to run itself without your participation.

However, my advice is before you decide to start your own business there are a number of questions you should consider and the main question is: Am I ready for this or not? Moreover, if you are faced with a serious challenge do you stick it out and solve the problem or do you just walk away? And if you can answer these questions for yourself you might just be ok!

I must have applied to well over 200 jobs by now, I have only managed to get ONE interview. What am I doing wrong??

sweetmea wrote on 12/20/2005 1:25:48 PM :

It all depends on the time of year as well.....becuase I just got a job a month ago when no one but fast food was hiring...it was a luck job that wasn't just seasonal. But I find myself not liking it all that much these last few weeks but what can I do no one is hiring except fast food that is nto just seasonal. Most places won't be hiring now until Spring or just before. So to make sure I stay employed without going to fast food I must stay where I am for some more months. I also find middle of summer is the worse to find one. Best times is spring and fall. soring becuase they are back up form christmas and ready to hire more then fall becuase alot of students work summer jobs so employers need people to fill their position like the day work or if the students quit their full position. If you want just temp/seasonal it's usually nov-dec when they need people for christmas but they inform you upon hire it's just seasonal meaning when the holidays are over so are you. ( I didn't mean to be harsh on that statement)
Where as in what type places are you trying for and what time of the year. I ask this because places or commonly grouped buiness hire only one -two times a year or so like example fast food almost all of them are always hiring....whereas government positions are only in march after the april budget is passed.
Maybe I can help you out more with your question if you tell me what kind of places you tried and when. I may even know some places that are hiring.
