Rolling Stones Onstage 2005 in Moncton. Your Impressions

moncton.net wrote on 9/4/2005 11:55:44 AM :
This was probably the most awaited event in the recent Moncton's history. So many emails, so many phone calls, conversations between friends, neighbours, even strangers... "Are you going", 'Maybe, and you?".

Two days before the concert we have overheard a conversation between two Monctonians both admitting they knew of nobody who was going. Yet the city promised a turnout of 85,000 - double the population of the area!

We all woke up early on that Saturday morning.  It was a work day for Moncton.Net. After having answered some last minute email questions about the show, we equipped with the camera headed towards the Magnetic Hill.

At first, the city (downtown) looked very usual - few cars and people here and there. We started to wonder... But the closer we drew to the site, the more breathtaking the scene was unravelling.

Magnetic Hill. Estimated 75,000 people are waiting for the Rolling Stones. Seven storey-high stage.

A 40-hectare field was full of people from all over Atlantic Canada. Estimated 75,000 anxious fans were laying, standing, lining-up for food, water and merchandise. The air was filled with the smell of marijuana and BBQ. Rolling Stones spirit was everywhere! Canadian and British flags intermingled with the images of the licks on every-other-persons' t-shirts.

The long wait from 3 to 8:30 was eased by the great performances by The Tragically Hip, Maroon 5, Our Lady Peace, Les Trois Accords. But everyone was waiting for the Stones.

In was already dark when at 8:35 at night we heard a familiar British voice and then an explosion of fireworks. Dressed in the cranberry jacket, a 62-years young Mick Jagger was on the stage, here in Moncton!

"You can't always get what you want", but this time we were getting exactly what we wanted. A massive display in the middle of the stage was showing every step Mick was making. And Mick was all over the stage, just as usual. The songs they performed were not only classic, they were the building blocks of modern music history.

It was really touching during "its only rock'n'roll, but I like it" to see young Rolling Stones on the giant center display, the pictures of the boys band the way they were over 40 years ago... Special effects on the scene were more magical than the mountain itself.

Young, old, everyone had so much fun that night. Before we even noticed it was time for us to leave. the further we walked away from the stage, the more emotions we felt. It was a blend of joy, satisfaction, happiness, but also sadness - such a majestic day slowly slipping into history. Shall we have another chance of seeing live Stones? Is this their last world tour? Maybe they are right, "You can't always get what you want"!

You are most welcome! We wish Stones themselves post something in this forum, but we doubt that!

That was one totally awsome concert. The weather was great. The audience was very civilized to one and other. I was surprised at the heat generated from the special effects. At one point I was closer to the stage than the band was. The show was well worth the money and any line ups.

Out of this World Concert..

I drove in from Halifax & returned after the show.   WOW!!!

I'd love to get my hands on a copy of The Moncton Times review of the show.  But the don't sell that paper here.

I can pick you up a copy but I can't make it down to halifax until Sep 22/05 to drop it off. I'm not sure but if you subscribe to your local paper you might be able to view copies of the Moncton Times and Transcript online at www.canadaeast.com I hope this message is of any help.

We went to the concert Saturday... we hopped a bus around 10 and on we went to one of the best days in our lives!!!  We got there bright and early, and managed to be a few of the first ten people in the fence!  We had a great time, with a few exceptions (ie drunk crowd members pissing in the center of the audience) Les Trois Accords, Our Lady Peace, Maroon 5,  and the Hip.... thatll be a day well remember forever!

How was it? In a word? Awesome!

I cannot walk anymore. I cannot talk. I cannot hear. Nevertheless, I do not care. I have died and gone to heaven....

Check this out... I went to the site simply to try scrounge a few snap shots of the site and the audience. Then a man who lived near the site approached me. He asked if we needed a ride and we replied yes! He parked my car at his house and gave us a guest pass to enter since he had extras. (I could not believe my luck) Then he drove us right to the entrance and said "maybe if you are close by the gates I'll see you there later...(fat chance since there were so many people) but I was grateful and very excited to exit his vehicle.

Suddenly out of nowhere, a stranger emerges and says: ???would you like to buy some tickets for the concert? I replied yes.  How much? $25, I just could not resist.

First, I was blown away by the turnout. It resembled a sea ??? a sea of moving bodies. "it gave me a nostalgic vibe" - the vibe was great! The people were very friendly. Everyone was in a great mood. The stench of the pot filled the air but who cares they were going to the see the ???Stones??? stoned. The new songs are awesome!  I was lucky enough to catch that show.

Now for my review...

The band simply blew me away.

Lets face it folks the Stones are the most rugged and resilient Rock???n???Roll band in the world. It is less than two years since they finished their Forty Licks tour and instead of easing off now that they have reached their sixties; the group???s work rate has accelerated.
An impressive new album, A Bigger Bang, is scheduled for September 5, lending fresh impetus to a formula that has outlasted rational expectations by 20 years or more.

While, talking to my friend Stella via telephone, I attempted to describe all that I was seeing; there was a big bang (fireworks) and certainly a swish in Sir Jagger???s step as he marched on to the huge stage that loomed from the end of the sold-out, 80,000-capacity in Moncton last night. The crowd went wild???and I must admit so did I.

A monolithic vision of inspired Art Deco, the stage structure was designed to accommodate members of the audience standing on battlements above and behind the band - surely the most sought-after restricted-view tickets in the history of popular entertainment. The lighting was breathtaking.

I got the sense the rest of the group have mellowed in their various ways but Jagger was as tough and spiky as a cactus as he jiggled and wiggled through the opening salvo of Start Me Up and It's Only Rock'n Roll .

Having hit their stride with a lovely, languid Tumbling Dice, they embarked on a new song, Rough Justice, that bowled along with a tremendous swagger.

Jagger (Jagger style) gave a somewhat ambiguous welcome to Moncton and whole Eastern Canada, and then led the band into another new number, and then an apocalyptic blues piece that was as stark and powerful as anything the Stones have produced.
Indeed, Wood seemed uncharacteristically subdued throughout.

However, Jagger held the reins more firmly than ever and carried the show on his skinny shoulders. In particular, his electrifying performance of Ray Charles???s ???Night Time, Is The Right Time??? underlined why he is still one of the greatest singers of the pop era. Mick was the man last night. Strong vocal performance. He is definitely not ready to retire from world any time soon.

I hope I did not hurt any ones ears screaming for my favorite band last night. It was an honor to be there last night; a night I will never forget for a long, long time.

A brief volley of fireworks exploded in the warm night air and the Jaggernauts rolled out in the dark night.

I am very proud that Monctonians were so well behaved and there seem to have been no incidents.

Hats off to the people of Moncton, PEI, Nova Scotia,New Foundland, and anyone else that I have forgotten to mention.

I didn't mind the smell of the pot and sniffed the odd blue cloud floating by. That was until the guy in front of me starting breaking unbelievable butt gas in front of me every couple of minutes. At this point I let the clouds float by and covered my nose. Glad you liked the concert, Melody.

Damm right, I loved  every minute. I have medical problems which limited my veiwing to just the Tragically Hip and the Stones. It was an incredible show. That butt gas did smell bad though.

I didn't notice Johnny Dep anywhere. I saw a guy there who looked just like Mr Bean and another who looked just like Drew Carey.

Ah, man. It was the best ever concert i have attended and the rolling stones rock, they are truely the best entertainers, i only regret not having enough film to get pictures of them when their stage moved up, my husband and i were right there.
the organizing committee did a tremendous job, way to go and to the police and security and all others involved in our safety, thank u and awesome work. I can't wait for the next concert next year.

BUt next year please have more toilets because i was squating beside a fence to .

And for the rest of the bands they were amazing too, I really like the song that tragically hip played where he told George Bush where to go.
BillyBob wrote on 9/6/2005 3:17:12 PM :

Waiting out in the cool night air, in what use to a grass lawn had quickly become a dusty dirt seating area which wasn???t so bad, really. After all, it???d be worse to be in the Sierra desert where it???s been brutally hot, remarked the hearty souls who were ensconced in the front of the line.

The gates finally opened at 1 p.m. for the long awaited band line-up concert in the Magnetic Hill, better known as the Papal Pope site.

Approximately 80,000 people were in attendance. A huge expanse of the hilly dirt lot was covered in bodies, bringing to mind a David Lynch movie or something equally incongruous. But it worked. When people walked across others??? blankets, no grass was left to besmirch the area.

The stage, which faced north, was large and high. Security was relaxed and the rules - no lawn chairs, no cameras, and no cooler - were strictly enforced.

Also in attendance were "followers" - fans who???ve been following the Rolling Stones on this tour since it began weeks ago - who looked like extras from some sixties baby boomers gang. The hills of the side of the site were covered with fans having their own parties a la Ammon Road.

Food, beer, fruit vendors did a bang up job of feeding the crowd for this event.

I only had one disappointment:  the Tragically Hip was not up to par in terms of sound. Instead, Our Lady Peace and Maroon5 seem to have been right on the money.

Jagger, in black with pink shirt and a sparkly belt, looked great, and opened with a rousing "Start Me Up" and continued pounding out songs - old and new - with his excellent backup group.

Jagger joked with the audience for a minute, showed off his French and continued to rock us. However, Keith was up to the task and played superbly, in some cases dueling with the legend and cutting loose at other times to rock at the front of the stage. Charlie Watts was bang on too.

According to the word on the streets, there were no complaints made during or after  the show regarding noise or trouble.

"Overall, I think it went very well."  "Everybody I saw seemed to be having a very good time. Everybody I spoke with since had an amazing time."

Way to go Moncton!

I got a good laff at what I saw in Potty Land. Every one was rushing to get in and out before the Tragically Hip came on that a lot of the people didn't realize there was more than one row of them. The rest of the porta potties looked almost empty.

Saturday--we got to a parking lot with an early start.  Right by the Route 2 on ramp for $30 Canadian, the parking lot was unchecked partying...these Canadians really pound the beer--AC DC rumor in the crowd--???they checked in last night man!???...I wasn???t holding my breath....lots of kids...the youngest Stones crowd I had seen since my first shows lace>Hartfordlace> ???81...a lot of people knew the opening bands better than they knew the Stones!  not most, but a lot.  Camping had been since mid-week and a full rock festival sense was in the air if you know what I mean--much kindage scented at all turns....no doses or anything offered up though...ahh, the Dead tour days....>>

PERFECT weather--high of 79, no clouds...not too dry, not humid ... lowering to 62 or so by end of show>>

The venue approach was up a hill and through an amusement park and zoo ... we enter up Magnetic Hill from the stage--sho??? ???nuff a bizarre sight in the middle of rural Atlantic Canada...entrances maybe two klicks from the stage, which is downhill between us and the town>>

Organization weak...food lines too long, port-o-san lines an hour long!  IT IS GOOD TO BE A GUY!!  wife gets a coke and a couple of hot dogs...I have no appetite and have nothing but a sip...and several smokes>>

Opening bands Les Tres Accords, Our Lady Peace, Maroon 5, and Tragically Hip were all mediocre, Maroon 5 best of the bunch...just time to kill...mellow crowd.....young pretty girls abound>>

8:30--a tad later than the 8:15 announced.  Pretty sunset over the hill, getting cooler....the sound starts, the video screen shows the familiar Bigger Bang opening, the shuttle, fireworks, a big bang, not enough, we need a Bigger Bang, EXPLODE!>>

1. Start Me Up--Keith struts out riffing....Mick elongating the syllables for the first time, Woody fine on the solo, stretched out an extra few bars.  Mick only sings the ???dead man ***??? verse one time.
2. It's Only Rock and Roll--what the?  not the encore?!?  --maybe they???re mixing it up!!  Keith tears it up on the solo....the video screen shows a collage of Video Rewind!!!  >>

3. Live With Me--bitchin??? version, the guitarists got the weave going!  Bobby Keyes was terrific, Charlie the engine....
4. Tumbling Dice--same as always, Lisa wearing a skirt, she wore pants on the first two dates I saw...this is the warhorse I am most tired of so my opinion was jaded.  It seemed just so-so >>

Mick saying ???Hello.........(big pause) tate>lace>New Brunswicklace>tate>.....and (bigger pause) tate>lace>Newfoundlandlace>tate> [he pronounced it New Finland]...and tate>lace>Nova Scotialace>tate> (big cheers)...and tate>lace>Prince Edward Islandlace>tate>???  then he slipped into French (which he does through the night), presumably saying hi to tate>lace>Quebeclace>tate>?  then back to English and ???we???ve some new things for you, some covers, some we haven???t done in a while.  This one???s called???
5. Rough Justice--it gets better and better, kind makes me think they should have toured in the fall with the new songs and recorded final versions in the winter, Mick emphasizing ???cocks??? (of course).
6. Ruby Tuesday -- another pretty surprise!!  Keith takes a co-vocal, I call Nellcote but my cell phone fades---something about Magnetic Hill screwed my battery and cell signal all day!.
7. YCAGWYW--best Woody solo on this tune I???ve ever heard, Mick dances out on the B-stage runway all the way, the ending sooo gospel....Lisa great
8. All Down the Line--Woody blazes on, fast tempo, horn section muted, guitars up.  Mick punches the air at the ending bish-bash...
9. Nighttime--best of the 3 versions I???ve seen so far, and it had to compete with my disappointment of hearing it yet again, but the performance won out.
Mick intros Lisa, then the rest....holding Keith???s hand up as he exits the stage.>>

Keith says ???Hello New lace>Brunswicklace>, Atlantic lace>Canadalace>...where???ve you been all my life? lace>Monctonlace>...hey,....oh, Woody said to say ???hello tate>lace>Mainelace>tate>??? but I don???t know what the *** he???s talking about.  Anyway, it???s good to be here....it???s good to be anywhere.  This one???s called....???
10. The Worst--afterward, Keith introduced his co-vocalist as Mister B-nard Fowler and thanked Ronnie for his ???beautiful??? lap slide solo--to my ears it was nothing special...I thought it was played slightly better at Fenway I.
11. Infamy--sang well, his voice strong here...I like this mid-tempo rocker, reminds me of the Winos....no Mick harmonica here, horns instead...oh well
12. Miss You --b stage slides out a minute or two into it, Charlie???s set had to be wheeled out a few yards on the stage to the section that moved out, we were hip to the stage movement and ran right up close to final location as others stood transfixed.
13. Oh No, Not You Again--Keith???s solo ripped, again these Bigger Bang tunes get better with playing this tour
14.
Midnight
Rambler--My fave and what I was hoping for...but the fact it came on the B-stage was a stunner.  It was played superbly, the weave, the harmonica so well that few noticed when Mick ***ed up the order of the lines at the spoken peak, it???s all good---ending was superb/Mick awesome on the small stage.
15. Honky Tonk Women--hip to the B-stage???s return we repositioned pretty close to stage now--maybe thirty or so rows of people--some 110 feet from stage center and left stage wing, that flower/Stones balloon out at this point, I don???t know how long, Woody finishes out by our wing (left if facing the stage)
16. Sympathy For The Devil--drum track at first, then Charlie joins in--Mick got rid of the spoken intro bit he tried out at Fenway I and II but still appears at the top of the stage, bathed in red lights with the snakeskin patterns on the video screen, Keith???s solo was super, Woody took a great solo also.  Mick screams at the end the ???what???s my name????...and as we know, with each ???pleased to meet you??? we get the propane jets from the top of the stage
17. Paint It Black--I love Charlie on this one, Mick very dramatic...growling out the closing rap, the slashing/flashing lights!>>

18. Jumping Jack Flash--faster tempo than normal...Mick goes out to B-stage area again, Keith goes from wing to wing...Mick sings the droning ???jumping jack flash, it???s a gas??? after the main verses are over and before the guitarists go wild...the horns DID come on but I could barely hear them
19. Brown Sugar--slower tempo than normal, Bobby nailed the solo, Canadians slow on the ???woo...woo...hooooo!??? compared to US crowds
20. Satisfaction (Encore)--Keith the first one out as fireworks explode, the first note unheard in their explosion.  Mick singing it right on, sneering out the lyrics, at the end running from wing to wing again and out the B-stage runway for more!  It was at least a nine minute version!>>

> >

finish around 10:45 or so--we were booking it up the hill as the core four took the final bows...time to hit the port-o-san on the way up and still be ahead of 80% of the crowd>>

The way out was an adventure...40 minutes to car.  Too few open gates in the fence...poor exit organization but better Canadian manners made it just an exercise in patience rather than a crush...easy access to highway as I threaded through hundreds of foot-traffic...156 klick drive back to Fredericton...Tim Hortons??? coffee and ham/swiss sandwich a lifesaver here!>>

the lace>USlace> border easy--of course, no dogs and I???m now clean!!  Murphy???s Law!>>

Do you not watch CNN?  Look at all that CRAP thats going on in the US.  It's almost like they are full aware of whats going on.. but dont have a care in the world.  As long as it doesnt affect "them" it doesnt matter.
But if you look at other countires that are in despair whos usually the first one on the scene, or is doing their best to fix the problem.  The one and only Canada.
Oh- and when the bombing happened in England... It took all about 3 weeks to catch the guys who did it, and put them in jail.  They didnt go to Pakistan and bomb the whole Fudgin' country and cause more and more and more problems for everyone.
I guess all im saying is...  Everyone has to get their heads out of the clouds, stop complaining about what you dont like... and put all your energy you used for bashing and complaining, into getting a better understanding on how the world works.

This has nothing to do with this forum.
It was about the concert not who thinks who is better.
But I think what people are trying to say is that US FOREIGN POLICY AFFECTS ALL OF US (The Whole Damn Free-World) Canadians like myself vary on the topic of american attitudes towards Canadians and some of us resent they're attitude.
I perosnaly think Mr. Bush is a monkey!! and the Rest of his Gang of thieves (Rumsfield,Wolfowitz,Calr Rove,Richard Pearl) But I think we canadians don't HATE you Americans. Some of us just don't like your attitudes towards the rest of the world.

All said.. The concert did kick A$$!

PS. I drove down to the show via dogsled from up north!!!

I THINK WE SHOULD START A PETITION TO HAVE ANOTHER VERY LARGE EVENT LIKE THAT AGAIN. I THINK IT WAS GOOD FOR THE CITY, IT WAS GOOD FOR THE PEOPLE, IT'S GOOD FOR ECONOMICS SITUATION AROUND AND MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS THAT IT WAS TOO SHORT, SO LETS GET ON THE HORNS AND BLOW AND MAYBE THEY WILL HERE US.

If you take 50,000 Americans and 50,000 Canadians, set them in a concert, and removed the word "Eh" from everybody's vocabulary, I don't think most people could even tell us apart. I proudly fly The Mapleleaf in one of my windows and proudly fly Old Glory in another. (And PEI in still another window)

Hey! There is no denying the stones were rocking that night - no matter what angle you were at you could feel the vibe of the crowd, and that was enough for moi. So shut up already.
