What do you think about the power charge increase?

wrote on 3/14/2005 12:04:58 AM :
Hi all,
I was just wondering what everyones views were on the recent power charge hike?

As for me i couldn`t believe it.They charge too much as it is.I feel really bad for those people of Moncton who are on social assistance.they are really going to feel it.And i read in the paper that social assistance might give the clients an extra $12.00.(they claim that`s alot of money to people on it).Give me a break.$12.00 is not alot of money.Maybe it was in 1970`s but certainly not in todays world.Only reason we have to pay the big hike is because NB power made wrong calculations years ago and now they are charging us to make up for lost money.Get this they also claimed that we can afford it.I would love to see the person who said that be on social assistance with say 3 kids barely making it and have that bombshell landed on them.then they would see just how hard it is.But it doesn`t matter how much we complain about it cause it`s NB power and they can do what they want. They always have.
It`s time this province pulls together in protest against NB power.saying we are tired of the price hikes, rude service, and the countless disconnection notices (every 3  days) when you only owe about between 50-100 dollars.they don`t care where you get the money as long as you get it.sometimes they even tell you to borrow it.I find that pathic to tell your customers this.
I would love to hear others views on this.[8o|]

this one comes from a gentleman in Alma NB.

Man, what a day I`ve had.

I got a call today from my distraught and elderly mother to day her power has been disconnected upset

I knew her bill was rather high, as she is on a low pension and since my father passed away two years ago she has no other income coming in. Me and my wife try to as and when we can to help with her bills

I found out last week that NB power were sending here two disconnection notices a week, to pay the remaining balance. Get this......... the owed balance is $112. Yes, that`s it.

I find it truly disgusting that a massive corporation can disconnect an elderly person`s power for 112 bucks. It`s freakin March for god sake.

We`ve tried to reason with them, but they will not reconnect until the full amount is paid. My wife stopped at the local store and paid the remaining balance this evening, called in the receipt number but she will have to wait until at least tomorrow for a reconnection, oh will be charged $40 for doing so.

To make matters worse they recently decided to crank the rates up too. Heck, if they spent less on sending these reminders and disconnection notices they might save some money.

I really am appalled at how they have treated my mom. She went to the convenience store this morning, and came back to find the freezer was starting to defrost and the power off. fool

They really are the epitimy(sp?) of greed. I think I might write to times and transcript about this disgrace of a power company.

I`m sorry guys if this should not be posted on here, but I really hope someone from NB power reads this and would like to tell me they can sleep better at night.

They were even rude to me on the phone this evening.

It is with great urgency that we should call on the public to show their vehement opposition to this power rate hike, as the recent deadline prescribed by the law for the NEB to grant NB Power any provisional increase is fast approaching March 30th to be exact...what are we waiting for?

NB Power rate hike embodies years of government's flawed policies and onerous transactions, which it wants New Brunwickers to bear unquestioningly. I reject outright NB Power rate increase but who is going to stop them now?

Student wrote on 3/16/2005 12:30:20 PM :
I am against the increase, and here is why:

When you rent or own your property, you do your budget. You figure some things may change, like the amount of money you spend goin out, but some things you assume are stable, like the rate of your hydro. Then you can set some money aside for things like a new car or a vacation. Now when something as stable as the cost of hydro goes up, it messes up all your plans.

We were in a business relationship with NB Power. They blew it! Topped with the increase of gas prices, things are goin pretty bad lately! But unlike gas prices, the hydro rates are something that were upped by a local company that simply did not care for its own customers....

Think positive!
Yes, I agree - a rate increase is shocking, but think about it -the utility can't continue to charge customers less than what it actually costs to generate the electricity...
And even if we complain and complain - I don`t think anything is going to change...(undless you have a real solution for the problem!)
Look around - every company that exists are making a profit, I know it suck`s for us - but hey it`s just the way it goes...
FYI - New Brunswick ranks the 14th lowest of 181 utilities serving all classes (as measured by ??/kWh)...so imagine the living cost elsewhere!
I think we are lucky here, NB is like the cheapest place to live in Canada...

Hi,
Nope sorry i can`t think positive about another hydro increase, and i don`t think i`m lucky either. The Power takes most of Nb`ers wages as it is and now they want more of our money. They have got to be the rudest people i have ever dealt with. That poor 73 old woman who had her power cut.She went out to get her groceries and to come home to no power. How cruel is that.It certanily isn`t lucky!!! or positive. And her bill was only $112.00.And she was struggling as it was.Just courious do you work for NB power????????[^o)]

If you cannot think positive - it's something you need to work on!!
I agree with Butterfly...

lilymist252 wrote on 4/3/2005 11:03:49 PM :
Hi,

Think positive you say.whats positive about paying unbelievable power charges? What is positive about disconnecting an old ladys power. That`s not positive that`s darn right cruel. What is positive about being rude to there customers. What is positive about seeing your kids go hungry cause you had to give your last cent to NB power, because they were threating to disconnect your power.Nope sorry this is not positive.maybe you have someone pay your power bill or live in a place where it`s included in your rent.so you wouldn`t understand.Or maybe you also work at NB power or have friends that do.
There is not one thing positive about this situation.Angry
AngeL wrote on 4/4/2005 9:59:48 AM :
I do not have someone paying my power bill and I do not live in a place where it`s included and I do not know anybody (including me!) who works at NB power.
What`s positive about paying unbelievable power charges? Having electricity! (Think of all the places where it doesn`t even exist).
An extra charge of $12 per month can`t make your kids go hungry (undless you don`t know how to manage your budget).
lilymist252 wrote on 4/4/2005 10:48:12 AM :
Well i guess you don`t know anyone on social assistance then.$12.00 is nothing to them.As they are hardly given enough as it is to live. How would you feel if you came home to your mother only to find out her power was cut from NB power?Trust me you wouldn`t feel very positive.!!You must have someone paying your power as then you would understand.the outrage from the people about the Power hike.Oh and isn`t this the fault of NB power anyway. They screwed up years ago and now they are making the people pay for it?I will tell you what! when another power company comes along me and a long list of people will join the new company while you and you alone enjoy the high price of NB power.
HAVE A GOOD DAY!!!Angry

The same circumstances may crush one person, hardly concern another, and even be considered an interesting challenge by a third person.
What makes the difference? One's attitude!
There are many attitudes that may help us feel better about whatever happens to us.
Anybody here has any suggestions for people who are having negative attitudes concerning the power charge increase?
AngeL wrote on 4/4/2005 12:31:13 PM :

If ever (I highly doubt!) another power company comes along, for sure I will join it (if it`s cheaper!).

Have any of you thought about living in a solar home, getting your electricity from the sun and being independent from the utility companies?

lilymist252 wrote on 4/11/2005 3:30:37 PM :
Well this line alone"Anybody here has any suggestions for people who are having negative attitudes concerning the power charge increase?"States you know someone who works for NB power or you work there yourself. And is trying to hide behind a phony name. There is nothing positive about the increase in the power. It`s just plain greedy.
GOOD DAY!!Angry
AngeL wrote on 4/11/2005 4:31:38 PM :
Hey, Once again - I do not know anyone who works for NB power and I do not work there myself.
And yes I might hide my real name with a "phony name" but so are you, so what`s your point?
It`s your choice if you don`t like to think positive. It`s your choice if you want to be "greedy" too.
I say my point of view, you say yours, you don`t agree with mine, I don`t agree with yours - but who care`s!!??
All I have to suggest - Be positive!!!
Good DayBig Smile

If you???re searching for alternatives to combat soaring electricity bills, the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton is hosting a renewable energy software workshop on Saturday, May 14.

The RETScreen International Clean Energy Project Analysis Software was developed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and several international partners in order to be able to quickly, accurately and inexpensively predict the performance of clean energy systems. This training workshop is being delivered by the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in collaboration with the New Brunswick Community College (NBCC), Woodstock Campus. Workshop attendees will learn how to use RETScreen in a one-day workshop using the software to analyse at least one renewable energy project case study based on an actual project. Some of the technologies considered include, wind energy, photovoltaics, solar water heating, solar air heating, passive solar heating, and small hydro.

Anyone interested is invited to register. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis. Workshop registration & fees are managed by Richard Olmstead and the University of New Brunswick (UNB). Fees of $30.00 includes training material and lunch. Payment by cash or cheque at workshop. For more information regarding registration and payment, please contact Richard Olmstead at 325 4500 (richard.olmstead@gnb.ca) or Ann Lockhart at 474-3115 ann.1@unb.ca.

Lets face it can we really do anything to change the minds of the 5% who make these decissions for us? They have decided we need this increase, so we pay it. It's like chess and we are pawns.

I know a person who's job is to disconnect people's power. He is not evil but actually one of the nicest people you could ever meet. He gets his peice of paper with lots of numbers from his boss. He doesn't know who's power he shuts off. Neither does his boss. Neither does the damn computer which spits out the paper. We are all just numbers. To blame the people at NB Power for cutting off somebody's power is like blaming a soldier for starting a war. They do their jobs, they get their pay.
I feal like a jackass for what I'm about to say but usually when NB Power sends out reminders and disconnection notices people should take them serious.
