What do you think when you see the word physics? Do you see equations? Do you hear people saying how hard it is? The atomic bomb? Or do you see people? Albert Einstein with wild hair and no socks? Men in white coats?
Yes, physics has a certain reputation. Yes, physics does make you use mathematics as a powerful language. But, physics also involves concepts, ideas, and principles expressed in ordinary words.. Yes, the atomic bomb was built with aid of many physicists. But the electricity that lights our homes and schools and brings us radio, television, and computers was also developed by physicists. Physics also helps athletes train more efficiently and have better equipment so that new records are set.
Of course, Albert Einstein was a physicist. But, so are many men and women who are not super-geniuses, who could easily be your next door neighbour- or you.
The goal of this thesis is not to make you a physicist. it is to give you an idea of the way physicists view the world; to have the satisfaction of understanding and even predicting the outcome of the activities occurring all around you;to know enough about physics so you can have a rewarding career in a technological world: to be able to make informed decisions as a citizen in an increasingly complex age: to learn to ask questions.
Someone once said, "Professionals baseball players ans physicist love their work. Others just go about work" I hope you will feel the same way about Physics.
