Christian Devotees Nailed to the Cross

oneandonly wrote on 4/14/2006 8:23:05 PM :
At least 11 Filipino devotees were nailed to the cross during Good Friday reenactments of Christ's final hours.

The Lenten ritual, opposed by religious leaders in the Philippines, is an annual tradition in this farming village about 45 miles north of the capital, Manila.

The Roman Catholic devotees were crucified in batches, their palms and feet attached to wooden crosses with four-inch nails soaked in alcohol to prevent infection.

Nine devotees underwent the ritual in San Pedro Cutud, including Ruben Enaje, a 45-year-old commercial sign maker who was nailed to the cross for the 20th time.

Enaje has said it is his way of thanking God after he miraculously survived a fall from a building when he was a construction worker.

In Kapitangan, another village north of Manila, two men wearing long wigs and tin crowns were nailed to the cross before about 1,000 spectators.

Forty-five-year-old Ruben Enaje grimaces as he is nailed to the cross for the 20th time during annual lenten rites in San Pedro Cutud village, in San Fernando city about 70 kilometers (45 miles) north of Manila on Friday April 14, 2006. Enaje said it is his way of thanking God for miraculously surviving a fall from a building when he was a construction worker. At least seven Filipino devotees were nailed believing that the sacrifice would save them from sin. (AP Photo/Aaron Favila)

why on earth do they have these barbaric rituals?

As Westerners, we look to the Romans as being one of the greatest civilizations in history. They achieved new things and influenced modern society. Yet in all of our praise of the Romans, we seem to overlook the fact that one of the most basic aspects of their life was the enjoyment of the gladiatorial games. These games, which consisted of fights to the death between humans, animals, or both, were the highlight of Roman entertainment. These bloody, barbaric rituals would hardly be considered part of a civilized society today, yet we continue to view the Romans as one of the greatest civilizations of ancient times. Why do we seem to overlook these brutalities? Do we accept death as a form of entertainment because it existed in society so long ago? I had no idea that the Romans killed each other and wild animals for fun! Do most people, like me, simply not know about the brutality that was experienced?

The idea that people would flock to huge stadiums to cheer on the gruesome gladiatorial games disgusts me. How could people possibly view death as a form of entertainment? And yet the more they saw, the more they craved. I wonder how these "games" began, and why they became so popular.

Another popular barbaric ritual that still takes place in the Jewish faith is called  Bris Milah, a ceremony held for Jewish boys on their eighth day of life. It is a bond between God and the Jewish nation for all time. It is a bond that can never be broken. But should the foreskin not be broken as well. We have eyelids and lashes for a reason. Heck why do we not remove those?

I think it barbaric and should not be done.

Not one major mainline Christian denominationa would ever claim the Roman Catholic Church as "Christian"...so why the title "CHRISTIAN" Devotees?

No, I'm not saying I personally (or other individuals) are saying that RC's aren;t Christians....I'm simply stating a fact.

The ones ones who corporately claim RC's a Christians are the NON Christians...odd, isn't it?

I'm pretty sure the Christian Community knows it's own followers better than self professed atheists and agnostics; and only a handful would agree that doing the above (cross nailing etc etc) isn't Christian at all...

Plain and simple:

Cross Nailing was a Roman means of execution...TRUE Christians never practiced such foolishness.

If I walked down Main St and nailed my hand to a telephone pole I'd soon end up in the J-Ward at the Moncton Hospital. I understand they are expressing their beliefs but come on eh. Stuff like that just makes me wonder where their little voices inside them come from. At least if they're nailed to the cross they can't smoke wacky tobacky or do whatever drugs they're on for a while.Confused [*-)]

The whole world has simply gone crazy. Lets call this Christians gone wild.

these people are not Christians anymore than the Queen Mum is a turnip.

Although, if we get enough people together to say the Queen Mum is a turnip, then convince the media, and go so far as to print it in popular books, eventually everyone will believe that she is!

Anyone who knows an iota about church history or the Bible (the "Christian handbook") would know this behavior is not Christ-like or Christian. So don't referring to these people as Christians.

Amen Jules!

Non Christians trying to act Christian...gimme a break!

That's like a Christian trying to act like a non Christian!

Not possible.

When someone sees a photo of a Cross they assume that it "must" be those "Christians".

haha..ignorance at it's best

Hey Jules and Thumper! (Grant here...)

These "fanatics" (for lack of a better description) say they are sharing in Christ's physical pain for what He did for us.  They have a misconception of what Christ did, why and who we are now, and what we must do. Most likely because of what the Catholic Church teaches them, that they must be of works to be saved. So this gives them the feeling they are "more saved" (??) I suppose.

Amen, OneWay!

Those who believe that "doing good/being a good person" will automatically give them a place in Heaven are in error.

Jesus alone gave us Salvation!

Amen!

In my above mentioned post I was in no way blasting Christians but the fantics who go to extremes to get attention.

Blast away Willie. That stuff is crazy like a wolf. I can't understand why people do those types of things. In the name of what again?
oneandonly wrote on 4/22/2006 5:57:22 PM :
what do they hope to accomplish ?
BibleThumper wrote on 4/26/2006 8:27:54 AM :
We must remember that these types of fanatical things aren;t limited to the fringe of so-called Christianity.

Religious groups, so called "Christian" groups and other religious institutions, may be parading themselves about as fringe-types, yet I submit that the offspring of religious fanaticism has been birthed by the Mother of Non-Religious Thought, hence, the secular "civilized" organizations among us have more to their discredit than any so called Christian nailing himself to a cross, as the following will show:

The Fanatical Antics Of Planned Parenthood: What of secular (non religious) individuals such as Planned Parenthood Founder Margaret Sanger who said concerning blacks and immigrants: "...human weeds,' 'reckless breeders,' 'spawning... human beings who never should have been born."  Margaret Sanger, Pivot of Civilization, referring to immigrants and poor people

The Fanatical Antics Of Charles Darwin:

I have found little that is good about human beings. In my experience most of them are trash.Austrian psychologist (1856 - 1939)
So, rather than go on and on showing how ridiculous the non-religious community can sometimes be, I'll stop at the above two quotes.

In my personal opinion, I'd rather watch some fanatical so-called Christians go all balltistic with whatever it is they "really" believe than to support such movements as Planned Parenthood which founder called black people "reckless weeds" who should "never have been born". (and people support such a |pro-Choice" group who's original agenda was to eradicate the black race?

The Mother of the religious right is in your very own backyard ;)
