XP is taking an early retirement

Windows XP will stop being available on new PCs from the end of January 2008.

Microsoft is keeping to a plan to stop selling the operating system even though surveys show a lukewarm response to Windows Vista among consumers.

A poll by US market research firm Harris Interactive found that only 10% of those questioned were planning to upgrade to Vista in the near future.

All versions of XP, including those made for media centre or tablet PCs, are affected by the decision.

    System shock

Microsoft has confirmed that from 31 January 2008 large PC makers, such as Dell, HP and Toshiba, will no longer be able to buy licences for the software so they can install it on new machines.

Windows XP is being retired to make way for Windows Vista, the consumer editions of which were launched in Europe on 30 January.

    (from BBC.co.uk)

So now its clear to me what MS is trying to do. I call it money extortion. There really was no need for a new OS. XP was just fine. But MS was probably getting low on cash, so they came up with Vista

What next.....An operating system that works for a couple of years then automatically shuts down until it is upgraded to the latest flavour of the month system? The whole world seems to be going squeeze play lately (squeezing the old ideas out and forcing the new ones) with it's new ideas. That is not a good sign. I think it is a p155 poor way for a company to treat it's customers. I realize Mr. Gates is the richest man in the world. Is he going to clone himself so he can be the second richest man in the world, too?

They will probably come out with a new Vista adapter so you can use your old software, only $249.95 plus shipping and handling.

I like my vista....other then a few compatability issues..not many though..for everyday regular users vista shouldn't be a huge change from XP...I use mine for entertaqinment, email, banking, photos and being creative with them and lastly for when I want to learn something and I haven't noticed a huge difference other then the layout which is easy to navigate...Most regualar users won't like it because it is change..and people don't like that...I didn't purposely upgrade to vista, my new computer came with it...the only annoying change I had to get used to was my media player..it is only compatible with the newest version and I preferred the older...but now I am used to the newer one and prefer it..All in all I survived the switchover and am ok with it

XP must be unionized or something. It finally starts working and now it's retiring? Oh oh. I'm full of pee and vinegar this morning.

Re: XP is taking an early retirement

I converted my "dumpster" computer over to a Mac about a week ago, and have been "cold turkey" ever since.
Now, I'm not about to get "all warm and fuzzy", but I am not going to be held hostage for $250 to "play" Vista.

I have been at this computer thing since 386s, but enough is enough. I do have legal copies of W2.1, W3.1, W95, W98, WME, W2000, and XP, I am not buying any more.

Not to mention, paying for just about every high school "squid" trying to make it's their life's work, to hack my Windoze computer, enough!

Re: XP is taking an early retirement

Remember the good old days of eight tracks. Cassettes came out and we had a choice of what to play. We had records and cd's came out. Again we had a choice. I don't mind things changing half as much as long as I'm given a choice of wether to change or not. This forcing people to change every few years is a load of billshut.
