It seems a Times & Transcript story this week on Metro Moncton gas retailers' attempts to crack down on gas thefts has had an effect.

A busy retailer on the outskirts of Moncton says he suffered five drive-offs yesterday morning alone, and he thinks it's because gas thieves know the literal free ride is ending in Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview.

The retailer asked not to be identified for fear of encouraging more thefts -- before yesterday's spike, he already averaged about one theft for every one to two days of operation -- but did say people who think they can slip away unnoticed from busy establishments should think again.

Every one of yesterday's thefts was caught on surveillance cameras, and now, thanks to increased co-operation between retailers, he has a place to swap photos so everybody in the business can look for the repeat offenders. It may not be worth retailers' time and effort to call RCMP for an individual theft, but compiling evidence of multiple offences will give police better cases to bring to court.

This man, caught by a surveillance camera, filled a jerry can with gas and walked away without paying at a Metro Moncton gas station.

While area gas retailers often have people drive off without paying, they sometimes have walk-offs as well. The man in this photos was caught on surveillance cameras at two different service stations filling jerry cans with gas and walking away without paying. This photo was taken in December. Anyone with information on suspected gas thefts or other crimes should call the Codiac Regional RCMP at 857-2400 or New Brunswick Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

With that in mind, Saucier and others have organized a meeting open to any gas retailer to further build the network.

The meeting will be held this Wednesday (Feb. 6) at 10 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Express on Dieppe Boulevard in Dieppe. Crime Stoppers will also be represented at the meeting and RCMP are also expected to send a representative.

Codiac RCMP Const. John Letourneau has helped out the retailers and this week praised them for taking the initiative. It's difficult to track how much of an issue drive-offs or "gas and dashes" are, because a quirk of Statistics Canada's crime statistics means gas theft and theft of electricity are lumped together.

Letourneau said the evidence-gathering done by retailers doesn't merely help police rack up the number of charges to lay. It helps them establish the criminal intent that is necessary to secure court convictions.

    Quick facts

Any interested gasoline retailer in southeastern New Brunswick is invited to attend a meeting aimed at stamping out gasoline thefts through enhanced cooperation and information exchange among retailers.

    Date: Wednesday, Feb. 6
    Time: 10 a.m.
Location: Holiday Inn Express, 100 Dieppe Blvd., Dieppe.
For more information: call Mike Saucier, 854-3332

Re: Can you help solve this crime...?

There's a fine line between brave and stupid. Stealing gas on foot is equivalent to walking said line.

Speaking of stupid ... any retailer who loses 5 payments in one morning obviously isn't the brightest tool in the shed. Especially if he's been averaging one incident every day/every other day to begin with. No wonder they don't want to be identified!

Caution: does not play well with stupid people.

Re: Can you help solve this crime...?

Stealing from your friends, and neighbors, is Fing stupid. I could really understand stealing from the gasoline companies (who have been ripping us off for years), but this is theft from small folks, like you, and I.

Re: Can you help solve this crime...?

the solution is very simple stop robbing us blind with the high prices and extra taxes on gas  then people will be able to afford it and will not need to steal it
yes big companies and government greed is the root of all evil

    stupidity governs the world
