FREDERICTON - Two New Brunswick restaurants, including one in Metro Moncton, had their food licences revoked following inspection reports citing unsanitary conditions and potential health hazards.
Seasons Chinese Family Restaurant in Fredericton and Pub 1755 in Dieppe lost their licences this week, making them the first restaurants to receive a "red" ranking since the Health Department implemented its new website ranking the conditions of eateries across the province.
The owner of Seasons Chinese Family Restaurant could not be reached for comment, while Pub 1755 declined to comment. Seasons Chinese Family Restaurant has closed down temporarily while the pub remains open but unable to sell food.
The report for Pub 1755 lists a number of violations, including storing spices in sour cream containers, uncovered foods in the fridge, raw hamburger stored on top of spaghetti sauce, potatoes stored on the floor, garlic butter left out of the fridge and a leaky basement ceiling.
The report also said the freezer needed to be defrosted and instructed employees to take a food course.
The inspector also wrote that the sinks were dry and dusty and wrote that employees were required to wash their hands regularly.
Meanwhile, the report for Seasons Chinese Family Restaurant states the inspector found evidence of rodent droppings in a bag of flour left open in the basement.
Droppings were also found on a counter top and the floor in the same area, states the report.
The restaurant was ordered to sanitize the area and contact a local pest control company immediately.
As well, the report also lists problems with the cleanliness of the walk-in cooler and states a five-gallon container of moldy vegetables was thrown out during the time of the inspection.
The report also says it appears a room in the basement was being used as a living space as toys and clothes were seen in the area.
The restaurant industry has criticized the website for being too vague and open to interpretation. No written guidelines exist explaining the criteria for individual ratings.
As well, the individual inspections aren't posted online so customers don't know why their favourite restaurant was given a particular rating.
Restaurants have their status posted as green, yellow or red.
A restaurant with a green rating means its last inspection showed a high level of compliance with regulations. A red rating means the restaurant was a high risk to the public's health and its licence was revoked.
A yellow rating means the last inspection results uncovered items that need to be corrected and the necessity of a follow-up inspection.
Gary O'Toole of the Health Department said an owner may apply for a new licence once all regulations are met.
There is no limit on how many times an individual can receive a new licence, he said.
"If you're a restaurant owner and you apply for a restaurant today and everything is fine, you'll be a green."
