    Is The word "Indian" racist?

    Consider....

Presently, an Indian is termed a Native American.

Prior, Native Americans were called Indians.

Prior, this was not considered "racist".

    Presently, it is.

Why do you suppose the word "Indian" is racist?

I thought it simply denoted an ethinic group, just as the word Chinese, Japanese etc etc.

(I bring thsi up because some Moncton Locals members think because I use the word Indian I'm a racist)

Re: Is The word "Indian" racist?

Being a Brit, many of us have the term "red indian" engrained into our heads, I suppose those awful old cowboy movies were to blame! The term Indian to most Europeans would refer to people from India, where as most Canadians would call them Asians!

Now I`m here in Canada, I say "Indians" when referring to Native Canadians/Americans. I`m not trying to be racist if indeed to it does offend people.

Besides, the Federal government doesn`t seem to think it`s racist? There is an Indian affairs minister and department.

Actually I believe it was the old British explorers who coined the term "indians", thinking they had found eastern India and not a new land? My history is sketchy!

There`s too much political correctness in the world today. It`s gone from one extreme to the other. You can barely fart without causing uproar!

also racist is taken out of context since the real definition of racist is one who loves his races buthat was taken out of dictionaries and the one definiton put in place one who hate other races

    Good oneeeeeeeeeee  Dan...

A Rose by any other name, ...

First, I'm a Native Canadian, but not an " Indian ".

    I was born here.

What we call Germany, the " Germans " call Deutchland.

What we call Japan, they call Nipon.

Poland   by Poles is called Polska

and so on and so on...

I've always wondered what the people from India, actually call their country.

In the Americas, when we say Indian, we are not talking about people from India.

I've never heard any Indian refer to that term as Racist.

To make things easier, maybe we should use the name that those from India use .

    Then Indians would be Indians.

We whites, are still refered to as Europeans by some.

    African is another stickler...

Years ago I made a friend who was African. Born and raised in South Africa. Of white parents, who came over from Poland. Talk about a personality conflict.

The best part about him was that he spoke Polish with a " British " accent.

How about if he moved to dieppe? He could be an Afro Acadian.

I don't think the word Indian is rascist. It's not words that makes rascism but how a person feels towards the other person. What next? Will somebody suddenly try to tell us that the name Newfie is rascist? I feal that as people someday lobby to have the name Newfie removed Newfies will feal sadness as they will lose part of their proud heritage. If I call a person an Indian I don't do it out of disrespect or in any negative way and I should hope that the person will look at it as a compliment to be called an Indian.
