Website promotes little-known option to stop Canada Post delivering junk mail

    THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO - With just a few seconds of effort, anyone can easily shrink their impact on the environment by telling Canada Post to stop delivering junk mail - but only two per cent of Canadian homes have done it.
Canada Post says it's because people want to get flyers and ads delivered at their door. Vancouver's Beth Ringdahl begs to differ.
Ringdahl's website, www.reddotcampaign.ca, spells out a simple two-step process to block junk mail: It's as easy as filling out a downloaded form and leaving a note on your mailbox.

For more than a decade, Canada Post has been quietly acknowledging such requests, halting junk mail deliveries and marking a homeowner's internal file with a red dot - hence the name of Ringdahl's campaign.

The website's only been up and running for a couple of weeks, but word is spreading fast.

Canada Post spokeswoman Lillian Au said Ringdahl's campaign is unnecessary - Canadians, she says, have known for years about the opt-out option.
"It has been in place since 1997, so we feel that we've done a good job and people know that they have that right," Au said.

Ringdahl's theory is that marketers would likely end up printing fewer flyers if there were fewer homes that received the junk mail.

If homeowners decide they do want to stop receiving junk mail, printing out the letter on Ringdahl's website isn't necessary; a note on the mailbox - inside the door if the box is in an apartment building or condo - will suffice.

A warning, however: stopping junk mail also halts delivery of municipal-service notices such as town hall meeting announcements and snow removal and garbage pickup schedules.

Dear Canada Post Consumers Choice Program:

I have joined the Red Dot Campaign in an effort to reduce unwanted mail.

Please remove me from all unaddressed mail distribution.

This letter, combined with the red dot on my mailbox, expresses my wish to stop receiving unaddressed flyers and mail. I understand that it may take a couple of weeksbefore the database is adjusted and the junk mail stops.

I also understand that Canada Post will still deliver some unaddressed items, such as community newspapers and letters from the House of Commons, provincial and municipal electoral offices and Elections Canada. And I realize that some unaddressed mail comes from distributors other than Canada Post, so I may still receive mail from these other services.

Thank you, Canada Post, for making this option available, and for giving us the choice to reduce our paper consumption!

Re: How to Stop receiving Junk Mail

I have a problem but I wish to remain anominous. My mailbox holds two of those newspaper/fliers. I get the newspaper/fliers twice a week. No problem right? If the delivery wants to put the latest edition he takes a former edition away. I DON'T ****ING THINK SO. The weinerhead throws the paper in my front porch. I tripped over the ****ing thing a couple of times. This is very irrirating. How do I convince this guy that in order to fit an object into my mailbox possibly he should take a previous one home instead of tossing the new one in my front porch. Message to flyer dude............If you're dropping new ones off then please get rid of the old ones. Is that too much for me to ask for??

we stopped picking them up because they put some at our front door, then also puts teh same flyers on our back door, we figured they woudl take the hint after seeing them just pile up, nope they started to just trow them under our car.
Just waiting till it's all over.

Re: How to Stop receiving Junk Mail

I only wish I had a wood stove so that those fliers would not go to waste.
When I was a younger fellow I knew a millionaire. He lived on his farm within the boundary of Toronto, no electricity, no phone, no running water. ANY mail he received he used to start his fire saying "if it's important enough they will come and see me".
So it would seem it is up to you to take advantage of the situation rather than complain about it.
(I have it on good authority, that if you lie in wait, and grab the flier delivery person by the throat, they will cease and desist)

We also used to live in the country and would always be very happy to see lots of flyers in our mail. It's great fire starter for those who has a wood stove (which I love the heat that those produce but hate the cold int eh morning lol) I soo miss those days.
Just waiting till it's all over.

I'd have one in an instant if the "approved chimney" didn't cost 4X what the stove does.

Re: How to Stop receiving Junk Mail

I'm getting ticked at those newspaper flyers. I usually leave a couple in my mailbox. The guy who delivers them, instead of removing the old ones, will just biff the new ones in the front porch. I've gone arse over tea kettle a couple of times on those fornicating things and I'm getting cranky as heck.
