There are places where Gay Pride parades are illegeal - Russia, etc

    Gay Pride, Rome
Gay pride events have been staged in many cities worldwide

Russian gay rights campaigners say they will hold a gay pride rally on Saturday despite a ban by Moscow's mayor.

The organiser of Russia's first gay and lesbian festival, Nikolai Alexeyev, told the BBC that the gay activists would find an alternative route.

Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov banned the march, calling it an "outrage" and nationalists plan to disrupt the event.

But Mr Alexeyev said campaigners had already achieved their goal of raising awareness of homophobia in Russia.

"This event was just the opportunity for us to say no to homophobia and to attract the media attention to this problem and to attract the attention of the authorities," he told the BBC's World Today programme.

The police will not protect us because this will be officially an illegal event
    Nikolai Alexeyev

"In the last 10 months I would say the Russian media has talked about this problem more than in the whole of Russian history."

Mr Alexeyev said homophobia was a big problem in Russia and there were frequent attacks on gay people.

Earlier this month, 39 people were arrested in Moscow after protesting outside a gay nightclub. Riot police were brought in to control a mixture of right-wing and religious activists, who picketed the club and shouted insults at people leaving it.

Mayor Luzhkov said he banned the march because he believed homosexuality was not natural and because the event would cause outrage in society - a position supported by many Christian and Muslim groups.

    Alternative

Mr Alexeyev said the ban means the march may not go ahead as originally planned, but there would be some form of public action on 27 May.

    BEING GAY IN RUSSIA
Homosexual acts in Russia were punishable by prison terms of up to five years until 1993
In Russian slang, a gay man is "blue" (goluboy) and a gay woman "pink" (rozovaya)

"Of course, we will not proceed on the same route that we applied for in the application, because there will not be enough security and there will be nationalistic groups who will gather in the same place and try to disrupt events," he said.

"We will have to find other options to go and realise our constitutional rights, it will be some kind of different gathering somewhere in the city."

Mr Alexeyev said opinion polls in April 2005 and April 2006 showed public attitudes were changing.

"If a year ago the majority was asking for the criminal prosecution of gays, this April the majority are against," he said.

"There are more people tolerant now than a year ago."

I admit to being very homophobic but I still respect gay guys. They are entitled to live life as they want to. Fine and dandy. But what about the Gay Parade? I really don't want to see guys walking down the middle of the street holding hands. Please keep it in your bedrooms. I like having sex with three legged Australian anteaters (just kidding) and you don't see me dancing down the middle of the street with one under each arm. Am I right or overreacting on this issue?

I think you are well within your rights. I second the motion. In this country we are too damn correct. We have to like this or we have to like that, because that law says so. Well hear me out. I fuking don't like it at all. I am not some moron you're gonna spoon feed how great homo's are. Fine have your gay day and get married and fuk up the a$$ but hey don't ask me to like it. I am anti -homo, homophobic, in fact just look in the dictionary and you'll see my picture under phobic. I am not a Christian. They have their own reason but I have a mind, and that mind says: NOT NATURAL!

I have the answer. Why don't we have a parade or hetrosexuals? Or or the swingers o the world. Why don't we have one for the Jews and the Blacks? Why don't be have one or every god damn thing on this planet. Why don't we have one or the skinheads? Heck I am sure they would like nothing more than celebratory parade to express their hate, ask them. I think Gay Parade is just what it says: a day to parade the fact that you are a flamer and do it public.Rub or noses in the shite. But right after the parade, they run back to the closet. Its a sham and I don't like it one bit.

Do you know that many homophobics are that way because it is a secret fear that they are gay themselves?

I have nothing at all against gays. A lot of the youth is gay..many of my friends are. Homophobia confuses me..i mean you hate someone because of who they love and are attracted to. I always wonder h ow i would feel, to like guys and people to humiliate me and to tell me its unnatural. There are many people who are gay and dont tell anyone because they are afraid of what society would say.

Sometimes people label me as a rebel /punk/goth/ whaever stupid thing they can think of, and a lot of my friends who i seem to drift to are the same..a lot of them are against gays, and i dont join in on their slander. They deal with a lot and i am sure its not a lifestyle they would have wished for themselves. Yea a pair of guys hugging without shirts grosses you out? what about two women? i am sure you accept women more then anyone because we all have this image of a man being tough and masculin, and prehaps when we see a more vulnerable male, men tend to think it might make people question them too, so they steer clear of this person. It is all steriotypes and Masculinity. Its over-rated. I am straight, so i dont take a WHOLE lot of offense, but my male friend is a homosexual, and he gets the living $h1T kicked out of him...its sad and by people who call themselves " homophobics"
