A decision by the Sobeys grocery chain to end its long-running tape saver program will make it harder for the Moncton SPCA to make ends meet, the organization says.
Under the program, Sobeys customers would send their Sobeys receipts to non-profit organizations, who would then return them to the grocery company and get a donation of $2 for every $1,000 spent, taxes and excluding tobacco and prescriptions.
Sobeys announced last month that it was discontinuing the program it had run for 25 years as of Sept. 26.
Pearl said the money made through the tape saver program paid for everything from animal maintenance to veterinary care to food and housing.
The SPCA is barely staying afloat financially with day-to-day donations, said Nanette Pearl, director of operations with the SPCA.
