    Re: Ban plastic bags?

I'm wondering about the plastic drinking bottles.  Yesterday I went shopping to buy a good drinking bottle but came home empty handed because I don't know what is safe anymore.  I don't wanna carry around a glass bottle for the love of Pete eh!

    I've been recycling since forever.

    Re: Ban plastic bags?

I never counted my bottles, I thought that was what they were there for since I pay 10 cent per bottle adn only get 5 cent back they get my other 5 cent so they can count. It's enough I had to buy them and drink whatever was in it. They never had a problem with doing that for me (even at that, they would come to my car and get the boxes of empties out for me and count them as I would sit in the car and wait to get my $$$)

    Re: Ban plastic bags?

When I was young, my parents were members at the local Coop grocery store.  I don't know if they do this anymore, but they used to charge 5 cents for every plastic bag supplied by the store.  Most people just started using reusable bags or started brining their own plastic bags from home.  It worked.  It would work again.  No one complained.  Better yet, people thought it was a great idea, and this was 20 years ago.

Even though the bags are truly recycled, the process of manufacturing plastic bags, then recycling them, and manufacturing them is wasteful.  It wastes fuel, water, manpower, creates pollution.  Why do it if you don't have to?

I have one of those reusable bags in the trunk of my car.  I never use it.  I never think to stop and bring it in the store.  Mostly because I can get a bag in the store anyways, so it doesn't occur to me to bring in that bag.  That's my fault, but if there weren't any bags available in the store, I would definitely remember to use the reusable, or at least go back to the car to get it.

I never count my bottles either.  I do sort them, though.

I've never gotten any grief for not counting them.

The reusable bags can hold more and are way easier to carry (good for someone like me that hates making more than one trip from the trunk  of the car to the house).

The only thing that currently is economically responsible to recycle is aluminum. everything else once all costs are factored in is cheaper, cleaner, easier, faster, and of higher quality to make from new. (source is the research team for Penn and Teller / Showtime) they also refute the "there is a shortage of landfill space" argument just no one wants a new landfill near them.

It may just be the guy we have gone to. The one in the king /steadman street area but I forget what the street actually is. Maybe we get him at a bad time (either after 4 weekdays when the close at 5) or on Saturday when they'd rather not be there. But yeah each and everytime we get condescended to and glared at.

There are only so many plastic bottles I can carry by bike. I count them as I remove tops and pour out the dregs. It doesn't take me any longer to count them up as I do that.

I might think differently if I was loading crates, bags of cans and bottles into a car.

But the refund comes quicker the more people count their own.

They also know me as counter and a 'small' returner and they fit me in between others.

lol Yeah that's why I don't count them, I end up with over 30$ worth of bottles when I finally decide to exchange them.

My poison is Coke and the " odd " Fireball.

I stomp my  2  littre bottles flat and can get 100 in a large yard size bag.

I get my excersise and they appreceiate the flat bottles.

Normally i have about 300, my best was over 500.

    HA!!

I can manage all of 20 x 2ltr bottles by bike.....just a dollar a time. Most of them are in a big walmart bag - which I constantly re-use Smile [:)] - dangling from the handlebar.

I don't crush them because they bang against my knee. Uncrushed, they are soft. Crush them and they get hard and pointy and the repeated banging is painful.

It's always nice to put your eggs or meats in a plastic bag before putting in your packsack, especially when biking on a hot summer day.
