At the risk of dredging up past history I do not think all is said and done with this topic!
"do you believe that we need them"
There are A LOT of other places that do not have vehicle yearly inspections.
A much better question would be:
Are yearly inspections effective?
Ok, I have to get a "rant" out here, so hold on.
First, I am going to have to trust that the folks reading this are neither stupid, or blind. Each, and every day, driving, or curb sitting, around Moncton, ANYBODY can CLEARLY see that there is a lot of junk driving around this city. You really do not have to look any harder than to see a rust hole in a rocker panel, or a fender, or how about that cracked windsheild? There are too many cars with these visible defects (that make them un-inspectable) driving around to pretend that the owners of these cars have bothered to get a "legitimate inspection". So, it seems, that if it is a personal desire to negate the yearly inspection process, a LOT of folks can do so, and do so. Leaving those of us that do get legitimate inspections, that have become little more than an excuse for a garage to rip us off, in the visible minority.
The $100 question: If I can see these things why can't the RCMP? It is a simple matter for an RCMP officer to write a ticket (for operation of an un-safe vehicle) that becomes void, if, and when, the recievier of that ticket can produce documents that their vehicle is indeed safe.
Another $100 question: Is the fine for operation of an unsafe vehicle not big enough for that RCMP officer to be BOTHERED?
As things stand now there is no reason to comply with the yearly inspection law in the spirit of it's enactment.

While I agree with much of what you have said, I think there are many varibles at play here. Moncton is a sleepy little village with a lot of bedroom communities surrounding it. Although I am not sure I want any of my neighbors in my bedroom, that is how its being described. However, I think the problem is one of complacency. So much so that YES cars with rusted out fenders and many unlicensed drivers are getting a free ride because the police could careless. And yes we will pay for it.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

"what is wrong with a little bit of rust"
As long as there are no "holes". You have ro realize too, that there are no longer any frames, as such, in these cars, the body, specifically the rocker panels, is "the frame".

The government is organized mafia. How are you going to fight the mafia unless you take out the man at the top. We have no choice now.
Persistence is the twin sister of excellence. One is a matter of quality; the other, a matter of time.

Alright here's some insight. I'm a mechanic and this is why you need yearly inpections. Because you don't look at your cars otherwise. People drive them and never have them inspected. In Ontario they inspect cars once when you buy them and that's it. Almost nobody takes there vehicle to a mechanic to have it inspected on a regular basis. Cars wear out and require maintenance folks. That's why the government forces you to have them inspected. There is no arguing this. It's political correctness. Think of the children.
The system is flawed. There have been lots of comments on here about shops gouging customers. And that's true to an extent. But consider this. The government decides what's safe and not. it's the law. They license the mechanics to inspect your vehicles according to the law. It's mostly black and white. With that said, there are shops that over do it, hoping to make a buck. But some mechanics are just afriad of what will happen to them if they miss something, I know a surprisingly large number of mechanics that refuse or would rather not do inpections because they don't want to take responsibility. In some jurisdictions the government will yank your mechanics licence for not doing proper inspections. And to a mechanic, it's not worth the risk. Some don't know any better and figure the car should be perfect new condition. Others just don't care and nickle and dime you to death because it's not their buck. I myself don't trust most shops or mechanics with my best interests.
Your best bet is to find a mechanic you can trust. Be involed in your vehicles maintenance. Ask questions. If it offends your mechanic, I'd suggest finding another mechanic. Ask around. And try different mechanics/shops. They are all out to make a buck. It's called buisness. But you want one that's going to fix what's wrong. Not free up every seized bolt on your car for the hell of it.
Oh, and I'd suggest that inspection stations be licenced to do inspections only. not repairs. That way there is no link between inspecting the vehicle and profits due to repairs.

I used to live in Ontario and you only have to do it once, when you buy the car. or at transfer I think this is the way togo. this once a year bull$hit is Bull$***. but at the same time i can see why they do it here. I have seen many vehicle that just shouldn't be on the road. everyear means it safe for the road.
I mean i wouldn't complain to much it's only $30 in Ontario its $50 or more and we don't have the Emisions test either. thats a ever other year thing over there. lots of cars don't pass and then they just sell and get rid of them for cheap. hint hint if your looking for a cheap car.

"hint hint"
ALL my $300 cars come from Ontario, the $60 ones from Nova Scotia, the Ontario ones usually drive here and pass, the Nova Scotia cars are "tougher" than NB cars.
Routine maintence here this spring will be ball joints, struts, new tires, and exhaust. I have a small oil leak, waiting for warmer weather, that may require some engine disassembly. I don't count oil changes @ 3000mi noteworthy.
