Proud Anglophone: Acadians pay taxes also.  So they have as much right to have their culture promoted as you do by their (our) government.

What proportion of New Brunswickers call themselves acadian?  Maybe one quarter?  There are more francophones than that, but they don't all identify as acadians.  Assuming acadians do make up one quarter of New Brunswickers, that's like 187 500 people.

I wasn't trying to make that "case" at all.  My "case" was exactly what I stated it to be.

I'm not disputing that, but if that's the case, would all cultures not have the same right to be promoted? Why is it only the Acadian culture we ever hear about?

You say, "as you do". They are not promoting my culture. I didn't see (and I'm guessing never will) a New Brunswick tourism commercial with a Union Jack flying in it.

I missed that in your original post.

I don't deny (never have) that acadian culture is a big part of New Brunswick. I'm not insulted by that fact. Not being acadian myself, I really don't care to be portrayed as one by my government, which, in my opinion, the ad does to all New Brunswickers.

If a New Brunswick tourism ad showed first an image of a family climbing Mount Carlton, then an image of someone fishing the Miramichi, and you were neither a mountaineer nor a fisherman (woman), would you feel insulted that YOU were being portrayed as a fisherman or outdoorsperson?  Would you be doubly shocked if you didn't have a family (as in your typical 2 parents plus children family)?  Would you feel that you, as a non-outdoorsperson who does not enjoy fishing and has no children, should have YOUR particular likes and dislikes represented in every New Brunswick tourism ad?  Should the government be required to include non-child-rearing people in their ads so as not to misrepresent the fact that not everybody in New Brunswick has children?

By including someone fishing in an ad, is that really sending the message that everyone in New Brunswick fishes?

So your position is that every culture should be represented in every New Brunswick tourism ad.  That would be some mighty long ad.

Anyways, there's a big difference between an Acadian flag and a Union Jack, if only for the fact that the Union Jack is the official flag of a group of countries which are not Canada nor New Brunswick, while the Acadian flag represents 25% of New Brunswickers.

I think you've taken it slightly out of context. The activities you mention are just that, activities that can be done here in New Brunswick, and fit into the context of the commercial, which is (or should be) to promote tourism in New Brunswick. Look at all the beautiful places to see and things you can do here. The fact that the Acadian flag is flying and not the New Brunswick flag is a slap in the face as far as I'm concerned to every other culture in our province.

No, actually the opposite. I think that New Brunswick tourism should promote tourism, not a certain group of people because of their rich heritage.

The New Brunswick flag represents 100% of New Brunswickers.

Re: New Brunswick - The "Officially Acadian" province

I get what you are trying to say but how many commercial did you see that DIDN'T have the Acadian flag? But you choose to b*tch and be offended by these very few. The Acadian flag does represent NB in it's own way. Where else will you find ACADIANS? All they are showing in the commercial is the culture difference here in NB (they show a english commercial with a french song and a Acadian flag in the background) they didn't run around with the flag and over power the commercial but you make it sound like that's what happened. OMG why can you not just accept everyone that lives here adn that we all have to get along. Why do you have to nit pick at everything that is not english? What is your problem here? Does it bother really that much, did it affect your life at all? I pay taxes as much as you do. Why shouldn't my Gov (and yours) pay for showing what NB have to offer.

I liked Lord's question regadring fisherman/woman. It's the same thing. You could swallow the fact that they would all consider us fisherman/woman but cause of a tiny background flag that represent the Acadian population that is here in NB, it's wrong.

We do have a huge congress that come to NB every 4 years and it brings many people from around the world, depending on which city got the contract, it booms the economy. Guess the name of it "Le Congress Acadian" and it's to bring acadians together. So why not show the support of the province to cultures that has made this province what it is today.

Do you get offended by the History of Canada commercials ? they are not all about the english white man.

Just waiting till it's all over.

Re: New Brunswick - The "Officially Acadian" province

This has nothing to do with French, English, Bilingualism or Acadians.  It is a NEw Brunswick commercial with no New Brunswick Flag.  It is a pride in where you live type of thing.  I am proud when I see a Canadian Flag and Proud when I see a New Brunswick Flag.. I could give a rats ass if there was an Acadien Flag or not...But if New Brunswick i being respresented, then our flag should be present

Re: New Brunswick - The "Officially Acadian" province

That's right!  There are many acadians in other parts of the world!  If they see an NB ad promoting their heritage, it could get them thinking about visiting New Brunswick.

It has nothing to do with pride.  The ad is not targeted at you.  It is not meant to boost your pride.  Those who created the flag don't give a "rat's ass" that you don't give a "rat's ass".

    T-O-U-R-I-S-M

That's all it's about.  Drawing non New Brunswickers to New Brunswick.  What is there in New Brunswick that there isn't anywhere else?

I've seen plenty. You are missing the point.  I am only trying to say that I don't think it's right that our government represents any culture, acadian or otherwise. It should represent us as a province. It has nothing to do with the Acadian culture.

No, it does not represent New Brunswick. It represents Acadia. There are Acadians all over the world. You of all people should know that.
