I am laughing my bottom off -- i've been here a while ok! Punk is not going anywhere. Punk has been here before me. he has pissed off a great many people. he is a cantankerous and venomous tongued person who is clear about what he says. and that is what i think the ones who like him like about him. i symapathize with what many of you say but c'mon, do we all have to speak in the tongues. does eveyone have be politically correct? how boring is that.

i don't think we should get rid of him yet rather by-pass his post if they bother you, just don't read them.

    anyway i like his post.

I don't understand how some can encourage bullying.  It reminds me of when I was in school, the more people laughed, the more wood they'd add in the fire.

Is that what we are teaching our kids?  As long as it's funny and it makes "some" people laugh it's okay no matter who we hurt in the process.

    I don't agree!

Re: Blinded By The Fat...Cover up!!!

I have read the post in question, and I am trying to understand, where the bullying comes from in this post...maybe the name calling? But even that is questionable because I don't see one single person being singled out here.

What do we want here? Do we want censorship or do we want freedom to speak. I am afraid of these comments because 1) we are adults here and 2) if you cannot have an open ended  discussion about things that affect our culture today, and your distaste for them--then why do we even bother.

He (Punk) says clearly that fat people are disgusting and maybe there is a much nicer way to say it, but we cannot tell someone how they should feel or think or say things, even if you find it offensive. If we do,  it's called censorship.

I don't know if you people realize  that the internet is being threatened with censorship from the government. Internet censorship should be left up to the individual not the governments discretion. When they do you will no longer be able to say things like: I hate C103 or Bush sucks or my neighbour is an arse hole.

I understand the whole thing about wanting to protect children, which is in conflict with the value of free speech, but lets face it, children do not read these post, and if they do, well, I have to blame the parents. Now if you are talking about protecting yourself, just don't read "any" of his post.

(My) freedom of expression is one of the most fundamental rights that we individuals enjoy. It is fundamental to the existence of democracy and the respect of human dignity. It is also one of the most dangerous rights, because freedom of expression means the freedom to express one's discontent with the status quo and the desire to change it. As such, it is one of the most threatened rights, with governments, and human rights groups  all over the world constantly trying to curtail it. So lets be clear on one thing: if that happens the internet will take on a very new meaning for all of you. If that happens you will only have yourselves to blame.

p.s. Heck, why don't we censor Punk by cutting all his fingers off so he can't type. I call that censorship.

For any of the people that are fat and sad about it, I have one thing to say.  "Do something about it"

Alot of fat people that I've met are insane. My definition of insane is "Trying the same thing over and over yet expecting a different result." Eat healthy, exercise and 95% of people can be fit. Genetics is a lame ass excuse for most people to justify their eating habits and lazy lifestyle. Only 2-5% of people have a medical reason (genetics) for being overweight / obese.

I'm not saying it's ok to bully them, but really. If you're unhappy with the way you look, do something about it and change it.

Re: Blinded By The Fat...Cover up!!!

This is probably the wrong section but who cares.

What I do care about however, is what I see happening here.

Listen I have been over weight at different times in my life. I was 230, 5'9. (now I am 160, 5'9")Yes, people looked at me, and yes I felt something. I knew they looked because I was fat. I  had no problem with others being disgusted with my fatness, I was disgusted with it myself, but too ashamed, to be honest with myself. I used exercise, I still do, no diet, I dislike fads.

Now, I totality agree with the above post that; as distasteful as Punks post may or may not be has raised some concerns about the rights and ability to share ones opinion over the Internet that may be considered objectionable, but don't intend to be. Freedom of speech is something linked to democratic societies and is linked to freedom of thought, freedom of assembly, the right to present dissenting opinions and to engage in an ongoing process of free and rational debate, and the freedom to publish.

Lets take racial discrimination on the Internet. It happens all day long every min, sec, hour, day, month, year, and is a complicated issue as there is no legislation specific to online racism. United States and Canada, still has not found an intermediary between silencing new or different opinions and allowing defamation to run rampant. And while I find THAT distasteful, in some cases we cannot censor it, [If ]we want to preserve our democratic privilege of freedom of speech and expression.

I do realize that many post on this forum is discussing subject matters that challenges current societal and individual values and pushes boundaries beyond their limits. But if speech is something that pushes the limits of accepted standards of decency, censorship will restrain that notion in the digital age. Believe me courts have the power to decide if printed material is classed obscene in relation to current standards. How it is determined is what we do not know yet.

Fortunately, for many of us the Internet is a good medium to express ideas, that challenge current opinions, which may be censored someday because they may not meet the new standards. Moreover, what many of us fail to respect is the notion that we live in an intellectual vigorous society in which issues can be debated freely without condemnation of one another.

Being black I understand racial discrimination first hand. By itself it is complicated. Racial discrimination on the Internet is an even more complicated issue as there is no legislation specific to online racism. It's printed. In some ways it helps me and et al, to study and learn the many faces of hate and why people hate. So as distasteful as it is, we cannot seek to silence these people. I want you to also know that I have suffered greatly at the hands of racist here in Moncton. They know who thy are too. I find it amusing when people say: Moncton no, not Moncton. My question is always why not Moncton. What differentiates Moncton from the rest of the World? Is it so unlikely  that racism would exists here? if so why?

It is only through the continual understanding that we will be able to preserve a democratic privilege of freedom of speech and expression that is accommodating to current societal values.

Now if you tell me to go "blank" myself or that I am full of poop,  I would try to understand you. I would challenge you to better understand why you feel a certain way. I may not respect you but I would try to understand. Even the hardcore racist, fascists, bigot fascinates me cause in the end they are people who need to be heard.

I speak freely and so should you!

What? That really made no sense. Your face is something you really can't change much without cosmetic surgery. Not really the same deal.

    I disagree...it's all about acceptance.

Re: Blinded By The Fat...Cover up!!!

Wait, have you read my posts?

I didn't say I had a problem with fat people that are happy with their bodies, I have no complaint with fat people that are honestly trying to do something about it. I have no problem with fat people who don't know how to get fit but are trying to get educated about it. I have the problem with the fat people who bitch and moan about being fat while sitting on their couch eating cheetos and drinking coke and doing nothing about it. These people don't have the right to complain. I feel really bad for the people with genetic problems that work their ass off but simply cannot lose weight. However this is only 2-5% of the overweight-obese population.

Your eating habits have consequences, we are in an age of abundant information, it may take a little work and sacrifice but for +90% of the overweight people they have no excuses. You probably think I've always been fit or skinny but it's simply not true. I was pretty overweight through middle/high school.

Now I still have some extra weight but I'd say I'm pretty fit, I go to the gym 5-6 days a week and am active almost every day. I find it hard to lose weight simply because we grow up in a culture of food. Everywhere you go, almost everything you do in the maritimes has food involved, but you have a choice to eat it or not. I love ice cream and probably eat more than I should and I know it's bad for me. This isn't different for anyone who is overweight. To gain weight you have to consume more calories than you burn. Simple as that. There is no hidden trick to it. To lose weight it's simply the opposite, you must consume less calories than you burn.

I agree with Melody that diets do not work. Diets are nothing but a temporary solution to a permanent problem, hence why so many fail. People buy into the outrageous claims of "lose X pounds in X weeks" , when none of these diets live up to their claims people get discouraged. Either that or people go back to their old eating habits once they hit their goal and gain all their weight back. One of the moto's that I now live by is this "Diets do not work, lifestyle changes do."
