    Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course

Kay from PC WIN DocPro here again with another lesson on how to
    hunt down that elusive file

I know to some of you this might sound like something that is
basic but I assure you there some things you may not be aware
of and some new tricks in this lesson.

As time marches on, hard drives are getting cheaper and their
capacities keep expanding into mind boggling sizes. When
Windows 3.1 was a fledging OS, a gigabyte of storage was
considered astronomical! Expanded hard drive capacities means
more file storage space. When your file collection grows--mp3s,
images, movies, documents etc.--it becomes harder to quickly
isolate a specific file from the crowd.

Windows alleviates this problem by allowing its users to create
meaningful folder and file names, giving each folder and file
identities of their own. But sometimes this isn't enough.
With myriad files scattered all haphazardly across your massive
hard drive, hunting down a specific file that you created
several months ago seems like hunting for a needle in a
haystack. Windows XP provides a simple and easy-to-use
solution for this common problem: Windows Search.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

Windows Search allows you to search your file system for a
specific file or a cluster of files based on common criteria.
You can commend Windows Search to hunt down all files that
contain a certain phrase or word in their filenames, locate all
multimedia content and images, or isolate all your documents.
You can customize your search query to be very general, to
return as many results as possible, or narrow your query down
to specifics. Let's get acquainted with XP's search
    application.

Search Results: Locate my lost File!

To launch XP's search application, open up an instance of
Windows Explorer; you can do this by opening up "My Computer"
or using the shortcut key combo: "Windows Key+E". Once you
have Windows Explorer opened, right tap on the hard drive you
want to search. If you like to keep your PC simple, you may
only have one hard drive, and it should be labeled the "C"
drive. Right tap on your "C" drive and select "Search".

When you first load Windows Search, you'll be greeted with
several text boxes and one of XP's cute little mascot helpers.
My Windows Search is accompanied by the "XP dog". The first
search text box asks you to type in a file name. If you know
the exact file name of the file you are searching for, type
that in and let XP locate it for you.

You don't need to know the exact name for a successful search.
As long as you know some word or phrase located inside the
file's name, XP will usually find it for you. To only search
for files that contain a word of phrase, type in your search
query into the "A word or phrase in the file" text box. A good
tip to observe when creating file names is to be as descriptive
as possible, as you may need to perform a Search on said file
sometime in the future, and a descriptive file name definitely
    helps with the search process.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

The "Look in" list box allows you to specify what hard drive you
want XP to search. The default is usually your "C" drive.

If you just want to search for files that fall into a specific
category--such as music, videos, images, spreadsheets and
suchlike--XP allows you to select a special option for such
purposes. On the main search menu, hit the "Back" button and
XP will ask you "What do you want to search for?" Windows
Search records several categories and will only search for
files that fall into your selected category. This search
feature is an easy way file all of your mp3 or image files in
    one fell swoop.

    The Mystery of Hidden Files

Windows XP employs various methods to save you from shooting
yourself in the foot. The deletion of a vital system file
could destroy the stability of XP. XP sometimes writes out
essential files with a special "hidden" attribute. This
"hidden" attribute actually hides the file from view when using
Windows Explorer. When you can't see certain files, there's
less of a chance of your accidentally deleting or overwriting
    it.

You can actually attribute the "hidden" setting to any file on
your file system. You may want to do this for privacy reasons.
To do this, right tap on a file and check the "Hidden"
attribute on the bottom of the file's property dialog box.
Your file will now be hidden from view. XP also contains an
option that will allow you to "see" hidden files.

Turning this option on will display all files with the "Hide"
attribute semi-transparently; turning this option off will
again hide all files with the attribute set. You can set this
option by going into "Tools" and "Folder Options" in Windows
Explorer; from here, go to the "View" tab and select "Do not
    show hidden files and folders".

    Google Desktop Search

Google, the company that brought you the amazingly fast search
engine, also makes excellent desktop software. Since Google
specializes in the searching field, it was only proper for them
to create an application that searches your PC's hard drive.
Google Desktop has more options than the standard Windows
Search, and it's extremely easy to use.

The cool thing about Google Desktop is that your search results
are presented to you in the exact same way you receive search
results from an online search from Google. If you're searching
for image files, Google Desktop will display each search result
in a browser window with an appropriate thumbnail image right
    next to it.

It should be noted that Google Desktop needs to index your
computer's hard drive when you first run the application. This
indexation process is the key to very quick search results.
Google Desktop will go through the index process when your PC
    is idle.

Google Desktop comes with a whole slew of useful settings and
features. It's a lot of fun to play around with, and is a lot
more powerful than the built-in search facilities XP makes
available. Give Google Desktop a try today! You can find it
    here: http://desktop.google.com/

    Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course

Kay here with another lesson on web privacy fundamentals. You
know I was talking to my good pal Eric Wilmes who works for
    leading PC security vendor

Although he said users were unaware of the potential problems
with online security, there were some good common sense tips he
    shared with me

We all know that the Internet empowers users with instant
information at their fingertips; information on tap, if you
will. When surfing the web, one can purchase hard-to-find out
of print books, check stock quotes, and play flash-based games
or myspace a few hours away. The Web is your portal to
information strewn about all over the world. Unfortunately,
most users don't realize the digital paper trail they leave
behind when surfing with their favorite web browser. The
information that you leave behind about your web surfing habits
can be seen by prying eyes, and few enjoy having their personal
    information out in the open.

The following privacy information is important if you share your
PC with other people and have only one user account, or if you
use a public PC for personal activities like checking your
email or your bank account. It's always a good idea to make
sure that you clean up all of your private data after you use a
    public computer.

When you're using a PC that isn't yours--pal's computer, library
PC etc.--it's best not to check the "remember my password"
checkbox when logging into any of your personal accounts.
You'll often see this password recall checkbox when checking
your web email or logging into your myspace account, and it's
often labeled as "Remember my password" or just simply
"Remember Me"; it's a popular web browser option, and it saves
you from having to remember a multitude of passwords, as you'll
not need to re-enter your username and password the next time
you access the website, but common sense dictates that you
should not check this option when using a computer that isn't
yours, lest you want other people to easily log into your
    account when you leave.

    Maintain your Privacy!

When you surf the web, jumping from link to link, checking your
email inbox or buying books from amazon.com, your web browser
stores certain information about your web activities. Your
browser does this information collecting as a means to make
your surfing experience more stream-lined and enjoyable, but,
in the end, a lot of personal data is collected and stored
directly onto the PC, leaving open a gaping privacy hole. Such
web surfing information may include data that was entered into
web forms, the exact URLs of all websites you've visited, and
    your download history.

If you desire to keep your web surfing habits private, it's
always a good idea to tell the browser to clean up after a web
surfing session. When using Mozilla's popular Firefox browser,
cleaning up your personal data is easy. Simply navigate on
over to the "Tools" menu and select "Clear Private Data"; this
simple menu command will discard all of your personal
    information in one fell swoop.

I am currently testing our own privacy program, called
SecureWipe. If you want to be in the full trial and will share
your feedback for us, please email me and I will short list
    folks for inclusion

    Buying Online: SSL

When you purchase goods online or if you're checking your bank
account, always make sure that your browser has a "secure"
connection. SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a protocol that
makes sure that you have a secure connection with the website
you are interacting with. When there's a secure connection
established, you can be sure that your private data that you
send will not get into the wrong hands. When buying items
online or checking your balance via your online bank account,
you can be sure that you've a secure connection in Firefox by
looking at the address bar. Firefox turns the address bar
yellow and places a lock icon at the end. When you see this,
you can be sure your connection to the web site is secure.

With the above yellow address bar and the lock icon I can be
sure that my connection is secure and won't be intercepted for
    malicious purposes.

Surfing the web is certainly an enjoyable experience, and
knowledge is power. So the next time you're browsing the web
on a public computer, make sure that you clean up your browsing
tracks, maintaining your personal data and privacy. When doing
online shopping, checking your bank account or any other
activity that includes sensitive information, always make sure
that you've a secure connection with the web site. It's the
best way to feel confident and safe when exploring the
    intricacies of the internet.

    Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course

Kay here with another lesson on browser wars.

Unless you've been living under a rock these past several years,
you've undoubtedly heard of Mozilla's popular IE killer,
Firefox. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox are
indisputably the most widely used browsers on the planet. It's
hard to compare with such digital giants. But few users know
of a "little browser that could" that was getting world-wide
downloads before Firefox was even a household name. Enter
    Opera!

There are few reasons to switch from IE 7 or Firefox, but if
you're like me, you like to experiment with various
applications that perform the same functionality, finding
little options and features that make said program better than
its competitors. Just recently I noticed a little "bug" in the
most recent version of Firefox--in the form of a memory
leak--that prompted me to give Opera a test drive.

At first glance, Opera's interface looks like a typical browser.
You have the familiar URL address bar residing at the top of
the browser's window along with the commonplace "forward,
"backward", and "refresh" icon buttons. And, of course, what
browser application would be complete without the functionality
of "tabbed" browsing? Opera is certainly no exception, as it
sports tabbed browsing like Firefox and IE 7.

    Surfing with Opera

Installing Opera is like installing any typical Windows
application. Within a few button clicks on the installation
dialog, you'll have Opera residing on your hard drive, awaiting
    a web surfing session.

One of the first differences you'll notice with Opera is, when
loading a web page, a little progress bar that's usually
reserved for the bottom status bar of a web browser appears on
the far right side of your URL address bar. When your web page
is fully loaded, the progress bar hides itself. It's a nice
little indicator placed at a convenient location, as it informs
you on the status of loading images and other web page
    information.

Opera supports the widely acclaimed "tabbing" feature, which
allows your browser to open up multiple web pages within a
single browser window. It seems to be the de facto standard
that all web browsers must reserve the key combo "Ctrl+T" for
opening up a new browser tab. Opera adheres to this standard.
Do a "Ctrl+T" and a new tab will open up. Opera also places a
    convenient "New Tab" icon on the left side of the tab list;
clicking this icon will fire up a new tab opened to a blank
    page.

    Saving your Sessions with Opera

Opera sports a nifty feature that allows you to label and save
your surfing sessions. Simply put, Opera can remember and
restore your tabs when you close the browser, so the next time
you run Opera, you can reload all your tabs again in one fell
swoop. Opera allows you to label your sessions, so you can
have more than one. As of this writing, the only way to get
this feature in Firefox is to install a specialized plug-in for
it, but Opera comes equipped with this functionality
out-of-the-box. Here's how to save your current surfing
    session:

    1. Navigate to the File and Sessions menu options.
    2. Select "Save this session..."
    3. Opera will ask you to name this current session.
    4. To open up one of your sessions, simply go the "Sessions"
slide out menu and select your session.

Opera's Session save feature is a unique way to organize your
web surfing habits. You can create a session for all your news
sites--the next time you open up this session, Opera can restore
your tabs to cnn.com, google news and suchlike--or whatever you
enjoy browsing. Once you start using Opera's Session save
ability, you'll wonder how you ever lived without such a
wonderful browsing feature. Give Opera a spin today! Grab it
    here: http://www.opera.com/.

    Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course

Kay here with some ideas on how to organize your schedule using
    some great web tools.

Google Calendar empowers you to organize and schedule important
daily events all in the form of an easy-to-use online
application. Because Google's Calendar application can be
accessed from any common internet connection and a web browser,
you can check your personalized calendar anywhere you have web
access. Let's give Google Calendar a spin!

Surf on over to http://www.google.com/calendar. If you already
have a Gmail account, you can use this to access Google
Calendar; if not, you will be given the option to create a new
Calendar account. Simply tap on the "Create a new Google
Account" link at the bottom of the page and follow the easy
instructions. You'll be organizing your life before you know
    it!

Once you log into Google Calendar you'll see a very familiar
calendar grid layout. Google Calendar's interface is very
friendly and intuitive. To add a note to a particular date,
simply tap on the date's respective cell. Selecting a date
will pop up a "text balloon" which will enable you to enter in
a note for that date. Try typing in a note, and select on the
"Create Event" button. Google Calendar will place your note
into the selected date so you won't forget it.

Here's how to set up your language settings:

    1. Tap on the "Settings" link on the top of your Calendar.

Kay here with another look at how to brush up your photos

Google's Picasa: Photo Sophistication and Simplicity

The sharp minds at Google labs have created many innovative
applications. One of their very best--an image viewer,
organizer, and editor for your PC--is called Picasa. Google is
known for releasing intuitive, avant-garde programs for the
masses, all at a great price! Google's Picasa is no exception.
Not only is this photo software without charge, but it's one of
the very best applications you'll find for download

Picasa allows you to view, organize, and quickly find all your
precious photos you may have haphazardly strewn about your
computer's hard drive. Do you need to make a quick photo touch

Running Picasa for the first time

Once you've got Picasa installed and running for the very first
time, Picasa will ask you if you want it to scan your entire PC
or just your personal folders, looking for multimedia content.
Picasa must run through this process to organize and view your
photo content for faster access. This process in no way
removes or moves any of your files on your hard drive; it's
just Picasa's way of speeding up some of the procedures it must
do to make your viewing experience more stream-lined and
    pleasant.

Once Picasa runs through its picture scanning process, it'll
select all of your image content into convenient folders on the
side of the application. Selecting each folder will display a
thumbnail view of each of the folder's images. Double tapping
on a thumb nail will bring the image into a full-sized view.
When in the full view mode, you'll see various tools at the
bottom of the image. The slider bar will zoom in or out of the
image. The thumbnail bar at the top of the image enables you
to go backwards or forwards within the picture list.

    Basic Image Manipulation

If you need powerful image altering functions, Adobe's Photoshop
still reigns supreme, but for fixing red-eye in family photos
and basic image cropping, Google's Picasa does just fine.
These image editing tools can be found on the right side of an
image when you double tap on its thumbnail. You'll see a
palette with three tabs: "Basic Fixes", "Tuning", and
"Effects". Picasa provides an array of impressive image
alteration tools, all of which are very intuitive and easy to
    use.

    Picasa Slideshow

Picasa's slide show feature is nice when you want to scroll
through a folder of pictures. This can be helpful for
displaying pictures of holiday gatherings and family events to
loved ones. Here's how to set up your slideshow:

    1. Tap on one of your folders and then select the "Slideshow"
button at the top of Picasa.
    2. Once you are inside of the slideshow, tap on the "Play"
button; Picasa will automatically scroll through each image.

Moving your mouse around when in Slideshow mode will make an
options bar appear at the button of the current image. This
options bar will allow you to change the slideshow speed (in
seconds) along with other options such as image rotation. You
can also scroll through the slideshow manually via the
"forward" and "backward" buttons located on the options bar.

    Video Capabilities

Not only can Picasa display your image content, but it'll also
play your movie files. If you have any video content, Picasa
has no trouble playing them in a specialized window. This
extra feature makes Picasa a powerful application capable of
handling images as well as most video content found on the
    web.

On the house software is everybody's favorite kind of software.
Picasa not only offers powerful image viewing, organizing, and
editing functions, but comes with a price tag that's music to
your wallet's ears! You may download Picasa here:

    Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course

Kay here with a look at Google Earth. I know some of our readers
are already keen users of Google Earth, as I am. However,
there are some tips and tricks that you may not be aware of.

Google Earth: Global exploration at your fingertips!

Google is most widely known for its powerful and fast search
engine, but Google also creates some of the most innovative
applications available on the internet. One hugely popular
application that Goggle has produced and openly made available
over the web is aptly titled "Google Earth".

Google Earth puts our planet under a cyber microscope and makes
available detailed images of any location on earth! All this
is made possible via imaging satellites orbiting our planet.
By typing in an address, Google Earth zooms in from outer
space, flying at high speed, until you reach your destination
address. You can zoom in closer to get a bird's eye-view of
your house! It really is a thing of wonder to behold! This
geographic application is so useful and powerful that the CNN
news channel routinely uses Google Earth to display locations
from around the globe when a news story requires such a
    geographic visual.

As if zooming in from space weren't enough, Google Earth also
provides driving directions. Are you planning a cross-country
excursion from New York to California? Simply type in your
destination California address and watch Google Earth visually
plot each freeway, street, and turnpike to get you on your
    way.

Google is well known for its "online" applications, such as
Google Gmail and Calendar, but an application such as Google
Earth requires the local processing power of your PC; as such,
you must download and install the Earth application. The
installation process is quick and painless, and you should be
up and running Google Earth without any complications.

    Giving Google Earth a Spin

When you first launch Google Earth, you'll be greeted with a
splash screen. You'll need to wait several seconds for Google
Earth to initialize itself. One disappointing thing about
Google Earth is that if you're using a weak graphics card, the
application may run a tad sluggish. This is because the
graphical capabilities of Google Earth need certain rendering
    functions found on more powerful video cards. But fear not;
Google Earth will function on older graphics hardware, albeit a
    bit more slowly.

You'll notice a bar on the left side of the application. This
bar will contain three tabs: "Fly To", "Find Businesses", and
"Directions". Of these three options, the "Fly To" is the most
impressive. Let's give it a whirl. Inside the "Fly To" text
box, let's type in everybody's favorite get-away destination,
Hawaii. Type in "Hawaii" and watch Google Earth start its
journey from outer space, all the way to the tropical islands.

Once Google Earth has reached the main island of Hawaii, you can
zoom in closer for a better view. Using your mouse's scroll
wheel will do the tick. Scrolling upward will zoom in, while
scrolling down will zoom out. There's also a zoom bar located
at the upper right of the application's window. You move about
the terrain by clicking and dragging any part of the map.

There is also a navigation panel located next to the zoom bar
that you can use instead. Aside from typing in a state or
country's name, you can also type in an exact address, such as
your home address. Doing so will give you a bird's eye-view of
the top of your house. You can find out how many of your
neighbors own swimming pools, all in a clandestine fashion!

    Visual Driving Directions

The "Directions" tab allows you to type in a start address along
with a destination address. Google Earth will plot an exact
course you can take, including freeways and surface streets.
Google Earth will also give you a graphical tour of your
directions, visually mapping out each route you must take to
get from point "A" to point "B".

With so much functionality packed into such an awesome
application, it makes one wonder why this application costs
absolutely nothing! It's just a wonderful gift from the bright
minds at Google headquarters. Grab a copy of Google Earth
    here: http://earth.google.com/

    Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course

Kay here with a look at widgets. Widgets you say - what is that?
If you are Mac user, you probably have heard of widgets through
    their Dashboard feature.

Now code crafters at Yahoo! have released an array of nice
little desktop applets that you can download to your desktop
and can do everything from giving you a 5 day weather forecast,
displaying the current time in analog format, automatically
checking your Yahoo email inbox and much more!

Yahoo! Widgets: Give it a Go!

Once you've Yahoo! Widgets installed, you can launch any of its
widgets by clicking on its icon in the system tray. Clicking
on "Open Widget" in the menu will bring you into your "My
Documents" folder by default; from here, navigate to your "My
Widgets" folder, which the installation program should have
    created for you.

Yahoo! Weather: Should I take a jacket?

One of the widgets I use most often is the weather widget; let's
give it a spin. Select the "Yahoo! Weather" widget icon in the
"Open Widget" dialog box. If this is your first time running
the weather widget, you may be prompted to into in your city or
zip code; type in this information so that the weather widget
can get your extended 5 day forecast. It's that simple. Once
you've entered in your city's information, you should see the
weather window projecting your week's weather forecast.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

The visuals are a nice touch; if it's a sunny day with a few
clouds, Yahoo! Weather will display a sun with clouds
surrounding it. You'll notice that the Yahoo! Weather widget
is not your typical run-of-the-mill window, as it doesn't
    contain the familiar maximize, minimize, and restore buttons;
it doesn't even have a caption bar. This unorthodox design is
both refreshing and pleasing to the eye.

The CPU Portal: Know when your PC is being taxed

Have you ever had an application perform a task and found that
you can't do much else? Applications load sluggishly, the
start menu seems to stall; XP appears to be taking a quick
siesta. Well, your PC's CPU--the brain of your computer--is
probably too busy to worry about much else but the task at
hand. Wouldn't it be cool to monitor how much your CPU is
being taxed at any given time? Sure, XP provides a task
manager that displays performance statistics, but it's not
    really pretty to look at.

Yahoo! Widgets provides a little desktop applet called "CPU
Portal", which is basically a little program that displays your
CPU's performance statistics visually. Give it a test run.
You'll see your CPU's performance represented by percentage on
the side of it, but the cool part is what happens in the
circular area. Try doing something that taxes your CPU, like
loading a big web page or something of that nature. When your
CPU's workload increases, the circular area in the widget
lights up depending on how much the CPU is being stressed. CPU
Portal is a neat performance monitor with a small memory
    footprint.

Analog Clock: Break away from the Digital Timepiece

I've a buddy that is so used to reading time in the digital
format that when she must consult an analog watch (think hands
and numbers) for the time, she panics! I grew up reading
analog time, and I actually prefer reading it in this format,
although a lot of people are more comfortable with the digital
time format. In any case, having an analog time piece floating
around on your desktop can add some pleasing eye candy in this
    digital world.

The analog clock that comes with Yahoo! Widgets is a pretty
piece of software with smooth animation; the second had doesn't
just dully tick by, it appears to almost glide from second to
second. The analog clock widget sports various options that
you can tweak to your heart's content: you can show the current
date, disable the second hand, set it to chime every hour and
suchlike. It's a nice little widget that can give your Desktop
    some personality.

I've only just scratched the surface, listing only several of my
favorite widgets. There are plenty more widgets for you to
download and enjoy. Yahoo! Widgets are not only extremely
useful but beautiful to look at. Thanks Yahoo!

    Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course

Kay here with a look at cool graphic apps called IrfanViewOne feels almost compelled to test drive an application whose
author claims has warranted several marriage proposals because
of the popularity of said application. Anyway, lack of
humility aside, IrfanView is a feature-filled, nocost image
viewer that offers scads of features that are sure to satisfy
    novices and professionals alike.

IrfanView: A Popular, Powerful Image Viewer

Of course, XP offers a default image viewer with the long-winded
title of "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer". But, like many of
XP's built-in alternatives, it's sorely lacking in innovative
features and settings; it's hard to get more basic than what XP
provides by default. If you crave a little more muscle from
your image viewer, you should by all means give IrfanView a
    try.

    What can IrfanView do?

You'd be hard pressed to find an alternative to IrfanView that
offers the same number of powerful features. IrfanView sports
a cool "Fast Directory" feature that allows you to quickly
cycle through all images residing in a common directory. Not
only does IrfanView excel at displaying your images, but it can
also play a lot of common video formats; this effectively turns
    IrfanView into a multimedia player.

IrfanView can also be used as a poor man's Photoshop, allowing
one to alter images with various effects and filters. And not
only does IrfanView provide its own built-in filters, but it
can also use Photoshop's own filters as well.

Conveniently scan a folder full of images

In my personal experience, IrfanView is best used as an image
viewer that can quickly scan a directory full of digital
pictures. A convenient "Next" and "Previous" icon is located
at the top of IrfanView's toolbar, allowing one to zip to the
next or previous image file in a given directory.

    Specialized "Open" dialog box

IrfanView's customized "Open" dialog box makes quick work of
selecting your image of choice. You'll be pleasantly surprised
    when you select the familiar "File" and "Open" menu options;
IrfanView's customized Open dialog box contains a thumbnail
view of each image you select; along side each thumbnail,
IrfanView will display the image's file information: width,
height, color depth etc. IrfanView strives to make organizing
and viewing your myriad images as easy as possible.

    IrfanView Thumbnails

Simply hitting the "T" key inside of IrfanView will display the
Thumbnails dialog: a sort of specialized explorer window that
displays each image as a pint-sized thumbnail view and a
directory tree to make selecting your image folders a trivial
exercise. Using the Thumbnail dialog box in conjunction with
the main IrfanView image viewer allows for a convenient and
    easy image viewing experience.

    A Poor Man's Photoshop

Hitting Ctrl+E will fire up IrfanView's nifty effects dialog
box, allowing you to alter your images in fun and exciting
ways. Experiment with the "Sharpen" effect to give your dull
images a bit of luster. Add a cool "Rain Drop" effect to
simulate rain drops on a camera lens just before the picture
    was shot.

IrfanView displays a thumbnail view of the original image next
to an altered thumbnail of what your image would look like if
you were to actually apply the effect; so you don't need to
worry about messing up your original image. The image effect
features that IrfanView offers is worth the download of this
    application alone.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of what IrfanView has to
bring to the desktop; it's hard to believe that this fine
application is available without cost! If you should fine
yourself looking for a particular feature or just want to get a
firm grasp on all that IrfanView provides, there's a
comprehensive Help File available that contains FAQs
(frequently asked questions) and an overview on what every menu
setting and option does; it's a fine roadmap to help you
navigate the multitude of features that IrfanView offers. If
you've not done so, grab your copy of the latest version of
    IrfanView at http://www.irfanview.com/ today.

    Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course

To help you a quickly Willie, here's a bit of what I can tell you , without getting to technical or bringing out my book LOL !

The paging file is very closely related to the physical RAM installed in the computer(SDRAM / DDR...). Its purpose is to extend the amount of physical RAM and make it available to the system. Both services and installed applications can benefit from this 'extra' RAM, even though it is substantially different from the sticks that plug into the motherboard.

Note : you should only adjusting the size of your page file if you seriously know what you are doing.

These adjustments effect the physical drive of your pc as well as other espects that most people don't know about.
A good exemple of failure is when after tweaking your paging file up, your system becomes attached to it, hence the software and all their componates. If one software corrupts for any reason,or any other virtual memory demanding programs like games and such, you'll end-up getting window errors and even possibly resulting in harddrive failure !

The Disk is the Weak Link:
CPUs and memory operate orders of magnitude faster than mechanical hard drives. The slower the disk, the slower the entire system will be. Hence, the speed of the computer has nothing to do with software nor programs !
