The film (L'illusion tranquille) was
not well-received by the Quebec elite who refuse to admit that Quebec is living
beyond its means. As long as the Rest (Most) of Canada is willing to keep
on supporting them, they can continue to hide their heads in the sand.
Albertans are getting madder by the minute & it is a matter of time before
the separatist movement in Alberta really picks up steam. The problem is
that when they are ready to go, they won't do what Quebec has done for the past
half century!! They won't just threaten to go - they will go!!
Ontario had better smarten up or we'll be left holding the
baby!!
This brings us back to Trudeau's grand
plan for uniting Canada - you know, the Official Languages Act that was designed
to persuade Quebec that their French language & culture will be welcomed
right across Canada and they can feel at home anywhere in Canada. Billions
have been spent promoting and enforcing this policy, hundreds of thousands of
lives have been destroyed as language replaced merit in the hiring policy of
Canada's public servants; first at the Federal level, then trickling down to the
provincial level and now being entrenched at the municipal level, right across
the country. Don't believe me? A report is being prepared by our
branch in B.C. for what is happening there right now as the 1.5% of
Francophones are given the resources to force Nanaimo to be declared officially
bilingual!!
The mystery is, "why are Canadians not
bothered by this strange phenomenon?" Why would the majority allow the
minority to dictate to them - to tell them that unless they can function in the
language of the minority, they cannot work for the government or even in the
private sector? People in Ottawa know exactly what I'm talking about -
even in the most menial jobs, bilingualism is considered an asset!! The
most well-qualified candidates don't even get interviewed unless they
are bilingual so we end up hiring the less-qualified candidates. Many
Ottawans have already left the city for other parts of Canada where bilingualism
hasn't yet invaded the job market - don't they realize that it is just a matter
of time before it does, no matter how far they
run?
Still doubt my words? I recently
heard from a waitress in New Brunswick who was not allowed to serve table unless
the customers specifically asked for an English-speaking waitress (the
assumption is that all waitresses are bilingual). She wrote to me, asking
me what I can do to help. My answer - "not much, I'm afraid!!" I can
only warn others that this is coming and to fight it while they can. No
point asking for help when it hits you and you have nowhere to
run!!
While Francophones have all sorts of
financial assistance from all levels of government to "promote & preserve"
their language & culture, Anglosphones have to fight to raise every dollar
needed to continue our battle. Our current fund-raising initiative is an
in-house raffle of a beautiful quilt donated by a kind supporter. Go to
the bottom of this message to see the
quilt.
We're also planning a T-shirt project with
the words "Quebec says "NON" to bilingualism - Canada should too!!" If
anyone is interested, I can forward the graphic created by another kind
supporter. This project can only go forward if there is enough interest -
we haven't got the funds to invest in something that will lose whatever small
resources we have
left.
