UK: Muslim checkout staff get an alcohol opt-out clause 2007 09 30 Daniel Foggo and Christopher Thompson
MUSLIM supermarket checkout staff who refuse to sell alcohol are being allowed to opt out of handling customers’ bottles and cans of drink.
Islamic workers at Sainsbury’s who object to alcohol on religious grounds are told to raise their hands when encountering any drink at their till so that a colleague can temporarily take their place or scan items for them.
Other staff have refused to work stacking shelves with wine, beer and spirits and have been found alternative roles in the company.
Sainsbury’s said this weekend it was keen to accommodate the religious beliefs of all staff but some Islamic scholars condemned the practice, saying Muslims who refused to sell alcohol were reneging on their agreements with the store.
Islam states that Muslims should not consume alcohol, but opinion is divided on whether it is permissible to be involved in the sale of it.
Mustapha, a Muslim checkout worker at the company’s store in Swiss Cottage, northwest London, interrupts his work to ensure that he does not have to sell or handle alcohol.
Each time a bottle or can of alcohol comes along the conveyor belt in front of him, Mustapha either swaps places discreetly with a neighbouring attendant or raises his hand so that another member of staff can come over and pass the offending items in front of the scanner before he resumes work.
Some of the staff delegated to handle the drink for Mustapha are themselves obviously Muslim, including women in hijab head coverings. However, a staff member at the store told a reporter that two other employees had asked to be given alternative duties after objecting to stacking drinks shelves.
Mustapha told one customer: “I can’t sell the alcohol because of my religion. It is Ramadan at the moment.”
His customers did not appear to have any objection to his polite refusal to work with alcohol. One said: “I have no issues with it at all, it really doesn’t bother me.”
However, some senior Muslims were less approving.
Ghayasuddin Siddiqui, director of the Muslim Institute and leader of the Muslim parliament, said: “This is some kind of overenthusiasm. One expects professional behaviour from people working in a professional capacity and this shows a lack of maturity.
“Sainsbury’s is being very good, they are trying to accommodate the wishes of their employees and we commend that. The fault lies with the employee who is exploiting and misusing their goodwill. It makes no difference if it is only happening over Ramadan.”
Ibrahim Mogra, chairman of the inter-faith committee of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), said: “Muslim employees should look at the allowances within Muslim law to enable them to be better operating employees and not be seen as rather difficult to cater for.”
A spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s, confirming Mustapha’s stance, said: “At the application stage we ask the relevant questions regarding any issues about handling different products and where we can we will try and accommodate any requirements people have, but it depends on the needs of the particular store.”

If you can't do the work don't apply for the job. Let a more qualified person apply. Why do some people fail to understand this basic logic?

Actually, even the " Indians " were immigrants, coming over accross the frozen Berring Straight, and some possibly by boat.
99.9 percent of the countries of the world were seattled by immigrants.
That was then, this is now.
In a Democracy, those that created a Country's wealth, have a right to say who and how they will share it with.

Good point...
Maybe its because we here now are too much " I " and " me ", oriented and the new immigrants come over with a " we " and " us " attitude.
Actually I' was working on just such a " thread " for here..
oh well..
Have we as Canadians, grown too lazy in our outlook on life here and are we being pushed aside by people with a better work ethic than we now have?

Now this is NEWS....
Canadian News
TORONTO - A Toronto mosque is telling Muslims not to say "Happy Thanksgiving" or invite friends into their homes for turkey dinner on the holiday weekend.
The Khalid Bin Al-Walid Mosque says to "avoid participating" in dinners, parties or greetings on Thanksgiving because it is a kuffaar, or non-Muslim, celebration.
A two-part article on the mosque Web site says Muslims should also "stay completely away" from "Halloween trick-and treat nonsense," Christmas, New Year's, anniversaries, birthdays and Earth Day.
"How can we bring ourselves to congratulate or wish people well for their disobedience to Allah? Thus expressions such as:Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Birthday, Happy New Year, etc, are completely out," it says.
In 2003, the Khalid mosque, which mainly serves the Toronto Somali-Canadian community, apologized for a newsletter that compared wishing someone a Merry Christmas to congratulating a murderer.
At the time, a junior employee was blamed for the slight, but the mosque's Web site has since posted similar edicts covering not only Christmas but also virtually every other Western celebration.
Muslims who participate in the holidays are termed ignorant and hypocritical.
While not all are religious holidays, the Internet site says Muslims are required to be different from non-Muslims "in matters which are representative of them or are characteristic of their identity."
Also banned, it says, are: watching sports or soap operas, walking dogs, family photos, wedding bands, Western hats, mingling and shaking hands with the opposite sex.
"Allah and his messenger have warned us against following or imitating non-Muslims in things which are characteristic of their religion or beliefs. This is more emphasized in the case of their eids [festivals] or occasions, which always hold some religious or ideological non-Islamic meanings, and on which the kuffaar indulge in many evil practices."
The Web site also has a question-and-answer section, which advises that Muslims can join political parties only if they are "able to exert some influence on the direction of the party so that it will take an Islamic direction."
Elsewhere in the Q&A section, it says that, "with strong determination and patience, the world will God-willing be under the Muslims' control."
The mosque is run by a federally registered charity. Rival factions within the Somali Muslim community are fighting in court for control of the charity. The mosque president could not be reached yesterday.

If pulled over by the Muslim Police I would tell them I was not walking the dog but the dog was walking me. Not going for a walk with the dog sounds like a pile of poop.......All puns intended. ![Big Smile [:D]](/emoticons/emotion-2.gif)

Re: avoid Western holidays
I go to my friends house, I respect his hospitality, and I respect his rules.
So what the #(*&$%) makes these #*%^$ muslim *#$^%-head, "immigrants," think they can come here and ....
... oh yeah, I forgot, it says, in the book of Islam, that they should move about the world and make babies and by this way, bring all of the world to Islam.
Now there's a proactive religion...surround the bastards with their own babies, and make sure they grow up with no free will, so that they will have babies (with no free will) that will eventually infiltrate all fascets of the world and eventually choke the life (free will) out of the planet.
Now, go have some BBQ'd goat meat, take a taxi, and sit back and watch Rogers channel 40 Sunday mornings....
Nausea, ad nausea.

It really amazes me how many Canadians or others, are still going around with their heads stuck up their butts or elsewhere and have no clue as to what is happening around them. Far too many live a dream world . A healthy dose of Liberalism can be a dangerous thing.

Deported imam Said Jaziri outraged by his plane ride home
Muslim cleric describes treatment as torture
2007 10 23
CBC NEWS
A Tunisian-born imam deported from Montreal for falsifying his refugee application described his treatment by Canadian authorities during his 13-hour trip home as torture. Said Jaziri arrived in Tunisia Monday night after what he describes as an arduous plane journey from Montreal, during which he was handcuffed for more than half a day under supervision of the Canadian border authority.
In an interview with CBC's French-language service Tuesday morning, Jaziri said he was deprived of any outside contact in the hours leading to his departure, including with his pregnant wife, and said the handcuffs he was forced to wear hurt him.

The Muslim cleric said the way he was treated qualified as psychological and physical torture, a nightmare that would take a lifetime to get over. But despite fears about his personal safety in his native land, Jaziri was able to travel to his family's home without incident and was left alone by Tunisian authorities. Canadian immigration authorities deported Jaziri following his botched refugee application, in which he failed to reveal a prior criminal record in France, where he served jail time following a 1995 assault. His recent application for permanent residency was also turned down. Jaziri's Quebec-born wife is eight months pregnant with their first child. Nancy-Ann Adams has been hospitalized because of complications in the last week and was unable to see her husband off at the airport. She made several emotional pleas last week on her husband's behalf, asking the federal government to stay his deportation. Jaziri was the cleric at the Al-Qods mosque on Bélanger Street in Montreal's Rosemont district. He earned a reputation for outspokenness by publicly supporting Sharia law, denouncing homosexuality as a sin and criticizing the controversial publication of the Muhammad cartoons in a Danish newspaper in 2006. Rigid regulations undermine immigrants' freedom to practise final rites, study finds
2007 10 24
Prithi Yelaja Staff Reporter http://www.thestar.com/News/article/271075
Death may be the final frontier when it comes to testing the limits of multicultural accommodation in Ontario.
Rigid provincial and municipal regulations regarding funerals and burials, created primarily to accommodate western Judeo-Christian customs, are forcing faith communities to adjust to the law rather than have the freedom to practise their final rites, according to a new study from Ryerson University.
"Along with the mainstream population, the immigrant population is aging and dying, too, in large numbers, so now these issues are coming to the forefront," says study author Sandeep Agrawal, a professor of urban and regional planning.
The lack of ethnic representation on decision-making bodies such as the Ontario Board of Funeral Services also presents an obstacle to inclusiveness, he adds.
Of the 13 board members – eight funeral directors and five public nominees – none belongs to an ethnic minority, admits registrar Joseph Richer. "The board could stand an infusion of diversity, and we have recommended that to the government."
A diverse board is key as new legislation regarding funerals and cemeteries is being framed, he adds.
The issues vary according to faith group, says the study.
Hindus, for example, face a problem with spreading of ashes after cremation. According to custom, ashes should be placed in a moving body of water, but conservation authorities say that's a potential hazard to ecosystems and isn't allowed.
"Everything is geared to the Christian tradition, but the rules are outdated. They have to change because the demographics have changed," says Pundit Roopnauth Sharma, of the Shri Ram Mandir temple in Mississauga.
He has been talking with the province for three years to get clarity on where and how Hindus can dispose of cremated ashes. Meanwhile, his temple has an agreement with a small boat rental agency to ferry grieving parishioners out into Lake Ontario, where they can deposit their loved one's ashes.
For Muslims in the GTA, the customary ghusl (bathing) and shrouding of the deceased typically takes place in a mosque.
According to Muslim tradition, burial should take place within 24 hours of death. But that's not always possible because of cemetery rules, as well as bureaucratic and legal requirements, such as the need to obtain a death certificate or in some cases perform an autopsy – a practice prohibited under Islam.
Although Muslims make up about 10 per cent of the GTA's population, they have yet to establish their own cemetery because of prohibitive land costs, says Abdul Hai Patel, of the Islamic Council of Imams.
Several Muslim communities have contracted space in Christian cemeteries. But requirements such as having graves face Mecca are "frequently at odds with cemetery layout," according to the study.
The Niagara Islamic Society is unique in the province for opening its own cemetery in 1992, thanks to a local Pakistani businessman who bequeathed a parcel of farmland.
After several years of wrangling with city council and neighbouring farmers over rezoning, the society finally got a decision in its favour from the Ontario Municipal Board.
But having a Muslim cemetery "allows us more freedom and just feels more comfortable," says imam Fuad Sahin. "In regular cemeteries, you can't bury on holidays and Sundays. Here we can do what we want. After Eid prayers, families will visit the graves of their dead relatives."
Chinese tradition draws a firm separation between the living and the dead, which means the Chinese community generally doesn't want a funeral home or cemetery in a residential area. The issue came to a head in a Markham neighbourhood a few years ago, when a funeral home wanted to set up shop. Chinese residents lobbied to deny the funeral home a building permit. But it got the permit eventually by taking the case to the OMB.
Fault for this disconnect may lie in part with ethnic communities themselves, which haven't rushed to set up their own funeral businesses. "There's a big taboo, especially for South Asians, around doing a business dealing with the dead," says Agrawal.
One notable exception is Benisasia, a funeral home in Mississauga opened in 2002 by a South Asian entrepreneur, which caters to a variety of faiths within that community. It now performs 400 funerals a year.
