    'travel survey' scam

    Their name and number will even appear on caller id.
    They have called when I wasn't home twice now.

    Beware of 'travel survey' scam

    2008 01 18

     One of the most common phone scams of the past decade has been hitting New Brunswick-area homeowners recently.

    The "Ramada Plaza Resorts" scam has been around in slightly varying forms since at least 1999.

    The scam,  works like this: A company representative calls to ask you to take part in a travel survey. Then they call back several days later saying that because you have taken part in the survey, the company has chosen you as a select group that can take a vacation at a reduced rate.

    Then they ask for a credit card number ...

    You will always find people who will send money.

    There have been 1,063 complaints about the scam since 1999, the most recent in British Columbia on Jan. 11. That caller lost $598.

    Some basic rules when dealing with incoming telephone calls: never give money; if it's too good to be true, it is; and take the time to research any offers.

    A quick Google search of "Ramada" and "scam" reveals that the "Ramada Plaza Resort" in Fort Lauderdale appears to actually exist, but people who go discover a terrible hotel, mandatory time-share presentations; people who try to back out find refunds hard to get.

    Is Vista Print a scam? About 2 years ago they offered me 500 free business cards. Willie's Fine Gifts was just starting out about then so I filled out their 2 page form of personal info because their cards sounded good. I have yet to receive the cards but only lots and lots of spam. Hmmm...Uhm [uhm]

    Have I been scammed or spammed?

    Re: 'travel survey' scam

    Beware of Facebook immitations. They are popping up faster than Orville Reddenbocker's popcorn. I keep getting a lot of letters from people wanting to join various sites. The trouble is I don't have a clue who they are. I don't know if they want to be mail order brides or are just phishing for information or what. The old spider senses are tingling on this one.

    Look out for your IRS tax refund. I'm supposed to get one for $340.60. That's good considering I'm a Canadian and don't pay American taxes. For entertainment purposes I had to check this email out. Here is where it took me: http://202.144.155.66/.www.irs.gov/.server/.online/.forms/.refunds/0,,id=96596,00.html

    Note most of the links take you to the same page you're already on. On the next page they want a credit card number. Not even my government asks for a credit card number to give a refund.

    Fraud squad offers tips on how not to be swindled

    Bruce Bartlett

    page B6

    SAINT JOHN - Identity theft is a growing business, but there are simple things people can do to minimize their chances of being swindled.

    Filling out ballots for free prizes is one of the most common ways people give away information that can be used to steal their identity. Many organizations using ballots are reputable, but you never know how safely they dispose of the information, said Lorene Johnson.

    Just use a first name and a phone number when filling out a ballot because that is all the information needed to notify the winner of a prize.

    People should be wary of how much information they provide on Facebook, the social networking site, personal blogs or even in obituaries for loved ones. A name, address and mother's maiden name are enough to allow a fraudster to gain access to some bank accounts.

    You can find out where people went to school, what year they graduated, there is just so much information you can get on the Internet.

    Phonebusters, a Canadian anti-fraud call centre, is recommended by the ABC program. It offers tips on how to avoid being taken in by offers made over the phone, by e-mail or regular mail. The organization can be reached at 1-888-495-8501 or on the Internet at www.phonebusters.com

    Don't fall for the big prize scam where the caller says you have to send money before you can collect money. Legitimate lottery and sweepstakes never charge fees to deliver prize money.

    Seniors are often the target of fraud artists because they tend to be trusting.

    Scammers hit Nova Scotia high-end furniture and appliances stores

    Scammers hit Nova Scotia high-end furniture and appliances stores

    2008 0126

    A series of high-end furniture stores were being targeted in a scam involving stolen credit card numbers that resulted in stores losing thousands of dollars worth of equipment.
    The scam spread to an appliance store in Bedford, with the fraudsters ending up with a washing machine.
    The scam involves someone - a man in cases reported so far - calling and ordering an expensive item over the phone. He gives an excuse for not being able to make it to the store and insists on ordering over the phone with his credit card - usually a Visa.
    He gives the number, which goes through without any problems. He then tells the store he'll send a delivery company to pick up the items. A legitimate moving company then comes for the goods.
    When the moving company arrives at the destination, some men are waiting in the parking lot claiming to be the owners. They load the goods onto their own truck and leave.
    The credit card number turns out to be stolen, and while the charge can often be cancelled, the store's merchandise has vanished.
    ~~~
    Here's how the fraud works: a man calls a store to order furniture, saying he isn't able to make it to the store in person. He told one store the furniture was a gift for a bride-to-be. He told another he was in Truro, at a chiropractor's office.
    Using a stolen credit-card number, the man orders thousands of dollars' worth of furniture. The charge goes through, so the business doesn't think anything is awry.
    A legitimate moving company then comes to pick up the furniture. When they get to the drop-off location, they find it's just a parking lot. There, some people load the furniture onto their own truck and drive off.
    Afterwards, even if the credit-card charge is cancelled, the store is unable to retrieve its furniture.
    NBers fall victim to loan scam
    Appeared on page A3
    Police on the Acadian Peninsula are warning people to watch out for scam artists offering loans in local newspapers.
    He says the victims responded to French ads published in local newspapers over the last few weeks. The ads don't have a company name attached, but they purport to offer loans to people in need, regardless of whether or not they're in debt.
    There's a toll-free number to call for a free consultation and a loan offer is made, but the person taking out the loan has to send a money order as a down payment.
    "They sent the money and never received the loan," says Gallant. "Usually loan companies don't ask for money up front."
    Police believe the fraud artists are based in the United States, possibly in Las Vegas.
    Police are warning the public to be wary of ads, unexpected phone calls or visits from strangers who offer loans or get-rich-quick schemes. Never give out confidential information about bank accounts or credit cards.
    For more information on various scams, people can contact Phone Busters, the Canadian Antifraud Call Centre, at 1-888-495-8501 or go online at www.phonebusters.ca
