You never know what will turn up during a trip to the beach.

Perhaps even something from thousands of years ago.

Though it hasn't been confirmed, there's a chance Charlie Corkum may have plucked an artifact from the shores of Malpeque Bay that he thinks could be up to 9,000 years old.

Corkum said when he first laid eyes on the object he had no idea it could prove to be something very special.

"I thought I had found another arrowhead or spear point," said Corkum.

He said there's a chance the six-centimetre remnant is part of a spear from the Paleolithic Indian period. The object and other native artifacts in his possession have been donated to the Mi'kmaq Confederacy, which is investigating its origins.

The object is missing a point, probably a spearhead, Corkum said.

Corkum said he isn't an expert, so determining the object's age will have to be done by others.

Decades of walking beaches and personal research have given Corkum a keen eye for finding artifacts others would pass by.

"I've seen quite a few arrowheads, I know whether stone is worked on just by looking at it," he added.
