Portage Atlantic rehab fundraising campaign short of goal

A campaign to raise money to expand the Portage Atlantic Centre in nearby Cassidy Lake is still short of its goal of $1.25 million.
The "Making Miracles Happen" Capital Campaign, launched last fall, has raised $1 million so far in donations and pledges. That's short of the objective needed to pay for expansion plans for the centre, which treats 14-to-21-year-olds with drug and alcohol addictions, said campaign chairwoman Carol Tracey.
There is enough money to begin construction in the late summer of one building, she said.
The non-profit operation began in 1996 with one main building that housed administration offices and the dormitory but demand for the service has surpassed available resources. There are small outbuildings and several portable trailers for use as classrooms and dorms, with one complex of four trailers serving as the new administration centre, entrance foyer and classrooms.
Permanent facilities are needed, Tracey said. A proper recreation area is also needed, along with other improvements.
The trailers - some of which were donated - were intended as a stop-gap solution only, she said.
The centre has a current capacity of 52 and is usually full, Tracey said.
Cassidy Lake is several kilometres south of Sussex and west of Norton.
Some of the staff include recovered addicts who want to help others through the ordeal, she said. More than 1,000 youths have been treated over the past decade.
Donations can be sent to Portage Atlantic Canada Campaign, P. O. Box 1041, Station A, Fredericton, N.B. E3B 5C2 or by telephoning 506-459-1284.
