As part of Canada Road Safety Week, a national campaign to make Canada's roads the safest in the world, the RCMP in New Brunswick has unveiled a number of initiatives to reduce the number of fatal crashes and serious injuries on roadways in the province.

In 2008, 78 people were killed in crashes in RCMP jurisdiction in New Brunswick. Speed, people not wearing seatbelts and impaired drivers were the major factors in most crashes.

In an effort to reduce these preventable crashes the RCMP is launching a number of initiatives.
In an effort to increase visibility of the RCMP on roadways, two RCMP police vehicles have been outfitted in retro colours similar to the black used by the RCMP in the 1960's and the blue used in the 1980's. Aircraft Traffic Enforcement is also going to be utilized in New Brunswick to reduce excessive speeds.

Other initiatives to reduce speed include speed alert signs, which are used in low and medium speed zones where speed has been identified as a concern.

    Fines for speeding are :

$160 plus HST for speeds less than 25 km/h over the speed limit and the loss of three points,

$254 plus HST for speeds more than 25 km/h over the speed limit and the loss of 5 points and...

$600 plus HST for speeds more than 50 km/h over the speed limit and the loss of seven points.

Possible sighting of missing man, Moncton, N.B.

    2010/9/22

Codiac Regional RCMP is looking to speak to a tipster or hunters who may have information about 43-year-old Michael Andrew Blakney of Moncton who has been missing for over a month.

On Monday September 20, 2010 police received an anonymous tip suggesting that hunters had been heard talking about images they captured on a camera that was set up along a woods road about three miles back of Scoudouc. The images were of a man wearing a ballcap and carrying a backpack while pushing a pedal bicycle. The description is similar to the one released by police regarding Mr. Blakney.

"The tip is vague but contained enough specific information that investigators want to speak directly with the tipster and if the information is factual, then directly to the hunters." stated Cst. Chantal Farrah of Codiac Regional RCMP. "We understand it's common practice for hunters to install cameras in areas they plan to hunt in order to capture footage of animals, so this tip is being considered credible"

Police are asking this anonymous caller or the hunters to contact the Codiac Regional RCMP at 857-2400 and speak directly to investigators in order to provide a more precise location of this possible sighting and to provide any images that may have been captured.

Michael Andrew Blakney was last seen riding his bicycle in Moncton in early August. Family and friends say he rides a one speed bicycle everywhere and is known to ride regularly on trails to Sackville and Petitcodiac.

Blakney is of average build, 5 feet 1 inch tall, weighing approximately 150lbs, and has reddish brown or auburn coloured hair. He also walks with a limp. Blakney uses prescription glasses and often wears a ball cap.
