Potentially deadly pets, snakes

I love animals and have the greatest respect for them and would therefore never take a wild animal and stick it in a glass box with a heat lamp for my amusement. Now what exactly defines a “strange” or “exotic” pet could be up for debate. I’m sure some smaller and NON-VENOMOUS snakes would be great pets, as are some species of lizards.

Then you have those people like the couple near Ottawa who recently won the right to keep their pet deer Bam Bam (nice). The fawn was found at the side of the road and the Strabys of Greely, Ont. nursed her back to health and kept her as a pet.

Okay, baby deer are extremely cute and don’t really pose much of a threat, but this is a wild animal folks … come on! And why would you want a deer in your home – imagine what their couch smells like – yeech.

So where do we draw the line between interesting and effing creepy?! Let’s look at the pros and cons of a potentially deadly pet: ie Snakes

Pros:

• Quick way to get rid of unwanted houseguests
• No mice in the walls
• Once word gets around that you have a cobra religious recruiters don’t come around anymore
• Trance-like states in which you can communicate with “the other side” (see poisonous toads)

Cons:

• Death
• Puss-filled bite wounds, fever and the sweats
• No one wants to come over for dinner parties
• It’s hard putting them in cute outfits
• No Prada or Louis Vuitton tarantula or cobra bags
