When the telephone and cable companies are trying to sell you internet access, speed is everything. Some promise speeds of "up to 8Mbps." Some go as high as "up to 25Mbps." But how well do they explain what those numbers mean?

Pay attention to two small but important words: "up to." Sometimes they can be a shorthand way of saying "up to a theoretical maximum speed you may not actually experience, because your wires are old, or you have a lot of neighbours sharing the connection, or because we're still upgrading our equipment in your area."

For this segment, we did a series of speed tests on home internet service across the country. As Erica Johnson reports, there's some very crafty fine print behind all the marketing.

Re: Are you getting the high-speed internet you're paying for?

    Obviously.

Just like buying a High Definition TV won't automatically give you high definition programming.  You need every piece of the puzzle, from the high definition capture of the image, to the wires, to the high definition box, the high definition DVD player and I don't know what else.  Oh yeah, the high definition cable service.

Same for internet bandwidth.  It's like sucking through a really small straw.  I can suck a lot harder than the straw will ever permit.  With a bigger straw, I can suck a lot more liquid.

High speed internet is a bigass straw.  However, if the information provider at the other end cannot provide fast enough fluid (or the fluid is too viscous), the big straw serves no purpose.  Or if the sucker is too weak, a big straw won't help.

Does that make sense?  I kind of got lost in my metaphor.

But we're all the suckers in this one aren't we?  Except for those who don't have high speed (e.g. not me).

My Aliant let me go behind by a couple of months. Rogers didn't. Who can afford Roger's or Aliant? Whoever gets cut off can't.
