    Route 7 Moose fence finally!

New Brunswick has finally started to build the long-promised moose fencing along a twisty section of Highway 7 near Welsford, north of Saint John.

Welsford resident Kathy McCollum was visited by Transport Minister Denis Landry in October 2006, and told her work would begin by June 2007.

She had single-handedly lobbied the province to build the fence after her daughter was injured when her car hit a moose along a stretch of highway that has been the scene of many moose-car collisions.

Landry told her the project would include underpasses and overpasses so moose could cross the highway safely.

"I want to thank them very much. Like I say, it's a reality, and I think there's going to be a lot of people happy," McCollum said when she saw that work finally started on Tuesday.

The fence was part of an election promise by the Liberal government, to put up 300 kilometres of wildlife fencing on highways around the province by the end of 2008.

That's a promise that is far from being kept, but $11 million has been earmarked for it in this year's budget, and on Wednesday, Finance Minister Victor Boudreau defended the lack of progress.

"We are committed to building and installing more moose fencing. By the end of 2008, we will have met at least two thirds of the commitments we made under our charter of change," Boudreau said.

McCollum said she's confident the province will at least finish the dangerous stretch of Highway 7, which involves another 22 kilometres of fencing.

Crashes involving vehicles and moose have increased steadily across New Brunswick since 2002, in spite of a provincial government safety campaign warning drivers to slow down.

There are about 300 moose-vehicle accidents in New Brunswick every year, many of them fatal, and occurring between May and September.

Why is our government siding with the moose and wasting money ? A cheaper solution to this problem would be a longer moose hunting season with more licenses issued. Bam increased tourism, more people get fed, fewer moose left to attack poor defenseless motorists it's a win win win and it's relatively free ranting [ranting] silly [silly]

I'm glad this is being done it's about time.

LOL more licences and a longer hunting season might seem like a solution in some cases, but this fence is going to be along military property....no hunting period.

    Yeah, it`s about time.....

I always wondered though.....about these fences and there`s was a new one built on the road from Miramichi to Bathurst last summer, what if an offspring gets stuck on one side of the fence while it`s mother is on the other side, once the nails go into the last post......OR there`s always better eating in one area and what if the animals get caught in the poorer eating area with the last nail driven.

I am not an expert but I think thats why they have culverts, under passes, and over passes.

As to "no hunting because they are on military property" I think that solves new problems ie what to serve troops (and how to save government money on military food), and what to use for sniper training (wouldn't want to go after a moose with a machine gun you'd ruin the meat, but I think a moose vs a tank in a collision test might just be a fair fight) [LOL]

Yup on the culverts and "some" underpasses, but we, in this neck of the woods, don't do over passes.  I've never seen one.

LOL at the moose feeding the troops.  I bet there is some of that going on and nothing said.  "Eat and shuddup!"  haha!

Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to set up crosswalks with flashing lights for the moose to cross in? They have them on Mountain Road and no moose have been hit there in over twenty years (A few hundred people, maybe, but no moose).

The trouble with that willie is that well you know moose ... they just don't listen. We'ld have to spend money on  teachers to teach the moose english and french (cause this is nouveau brunswique don'cha know) And then teach em how to use the cross walk. Easier to shoot em 8)

"Ya know they'll walk just as well bein led"
" I like to smack em"

I suppose hiring crossing guards or special busses to drive them is out of the question.

Re: Route 7 Moose fence finally!

....from the recent conversation up above.......a flashback....

A friend of mine told me about her husband, a mechanic, raving and raving at their daughter for smashing up her car when a deer hit it.  He had to fix the car.   A week later my friend, his wife, hit a deer with her car.  The guy went nuts.  He was totally P oed and didn't let up for a month, mouthing off all over the place how stupid that was, his daughter and then wife smashing their cars up by not paying attention at the deer crossing spot.  He had to fix her car too.......and you know how this story ends eh hahaha!  YUP, at the same spot, he ran into a deer only his damage was humongous....a little Toyota truck.....expensive to fix.  He drove around with it dented for awhile and had to hang his head every where he went.

If a mute person walks around chewing on his fingers is he biting his fingernails or just eating his words?
