Welcome to Canada’s Ocean Gayground
It might only be Easter, but gays and lesbians are already planning for this summer’s Halifax Pride Week. And the official logo for this year’s event ties the theme to an iconic Nova Scotia slogan.
The theme is Licence to Celebrate, and the Pride Week logo is designed to resemble a Nova Scotia licence plate. It includes a small rainbow flag in the top left corner and "Canada’s Ocean Gayground" under the vanity plate number 20 YRS PRD 08.

The 2008 version of Pride Week, to take place July 20-27, will mark the 20th anniversary of Atlantic Canada’s largest Pride festival, a public meeting in Halifax heard Thursday. The community meeting was the first of four to be hosted by event organizers, who want to collect ideas for the annual fete.
Pride Week chairman Hugo Dann said the logo and theme are indicative of the enduring, and entertaining, nature of the freedom of expression event, a weeklong party featuring various indoor and outdoor activities.
Pride Week planners are recruiting volunteers for the Halifax happening. Applicants can apply online at www.halifaxpride.com.
Last year, about 5,000 participants and more than 60 floats were in the Pride parade in downtown Halifax. Mayor Peter Kelly took part in the colourful procession for the first time since becoming mayor in 2000. He had said he couldn’t make previous Pride parades due to scheduling conflicts.
The 2008 Pride parade is set for July 26.
