    Selective Mutism

I am trying to see if there is a demand for a Support Group for Parents of Selectively Mute Children in New Brunswick. Selective Mutism is a rare anxiety disorder that appears in children, usually before the age of 5. They are able to speak in some situations (at home), but not in others (School or daycare). These children are sometimes labeled as shy and go through their early life suffering in silence. Please contact us if you are (or know) a parent of a Selectively Mute child. It makes a difference when you can speak to another parent.

No, unfortunately I didn't know about it!  Too bad I missed it, I have yet to see anything that is televised.

So not to be crude (and to covertly or not so covertly hand you a soapbox and podium, and one of those pointy  things teachers point with) what exactly is the difference between a person who isn't speaking because they really are shy and selective mutism .. is it just some new label psychologists and psychiatrists want to label people (especially children) with so they can get yachts faster and we can become a medicated unthinking society ?

Feel free to teach and preach away (and to take pot shots at me for being an ignoramus I could have wiki-d but the information will probably be more informative coming from someone who has dealt with it first hand)

I had never heard of this until today. I googled it and foun a couple of you tube videos from someone who suffers from it. I could relate to a lot of what she says, but not to the degree she has it.
