Why are flags flying at half mast?

Is it the train crash in China?  I can't find any other reason it might be.

You can see boats well enough from where you are to determine that they are flying flags at half mast ? Ohhh you meant half staff. I understand now.

A$$hole. You know what I meant.

Someone just told me it's some national day for those killed in the workplace.

Ya know even before I read what you wrote (and if there hadn't been a reply I was going to edit my post) I was planning on saying  Yeah I'm a bit of a "glute toque" today. Of course why signal today out.

Actually, my vocabulary is correct.  One definition of a mast is "any sturdy upright pole".

    Also:

Half-staff or half-mast describes a flag flying approximately halfway up a flagpole.

I picked that info off www.dictionary.com.

Oh yeah well I bet you expected this like the Spanish Inquisition (and no one expects the Spanish Inquisition)

Well played sir I stand corrected

    /bow deeply and humbly

Someone looked something up, did research, rebutted with fact, and cited a source. I think I just cried a single solitary tear of joy 8)

Back in England we always used the term 'half mast' but I do recollect seeing 'half staff' in the paper here.

Re: Why are flags flying at half mast?

I read in the paper today that NB had 8 workplace fatalities last year.

Out of interest, I googled. The UK has a population 80 times the size of NB yet workplace fatalities outnumbered NB by only 30 times.

I can't say I'm surprised although I'm sure some of the deaths may be down to extreme weather conditions that just wouldn't exist in the UK.

But yesterday I saw two men working on a house. Their raised platform consisted of a few wooden supports fixed to the house and a SINGLE plank for them to walk on.

Apart from the obvious danger of that, how can they do a good job when they are trying to maintain balance on such a narrow strip? Or is that part of the problem; that they can't if the pressures to complete the job are too demanding?
