New Brunswick - The "Officially Acadian" province

Turns out our government would like us to be officially acadian, or at least it would seem that way to me. Take a look at the new tourism commercial.

    http://s302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/proudanglo/?action=view&current=NBTourismCommercial.flv

Can anyone explain why a commercial for New Brunswick, shows only an Acadian banner, but has no provincial flag? And why is there a French song, but no English one?

If you're like me and would like an explanation, then ask:

    stuart.jamieson@gnb.ca

    Murphy.B@parl.gc.ca

I think the singer is singing in French but the guitar player is playing in English.Uhm [uhm]

I've seen that advertisement a few times now and wondered how the anti-French would take it.

I think it's a beautiful add.  The pictures beautiful, fiddle playing beautiful (French Tune haha) and the singer sings beautifully.

It's a bilingual add  and one I'm quite proud of actually.  I think New Brunswick is unique being bilingual and rich in culture.

First, I'm not anti-french. I'm anti-bilingualism, and the way it's applied here in New Brunswick. Secondly, in my opinion, the fact that you wondered that would indicate to me that you noticed the same thing I did. You just didn't find it as insulting as I did.

Sugar coated sh*t still tastes like sh*t.

I just simply find it outrageous that our government finds it acceptable to run this ad, an ad for NEW BRUNSWICK, not Acadia, and does not even feel the need to include our provincial flag.

I hear ya, but I just don't get too excited over this bilingualism stuff, nor flags, nor Acadian culture in a prom add.

And you're right when ya say....

...cuz I do hear it all over the place from other people who share your opinions.......family members, co-workers.......some neighbours.  Yup....

Re: New Brunswick - The "Officially Acadian" province

Maybe the fact that it's the acadian flag flying and a french song playing in an english ad is to show a little diversity.  Maybe it's to show that one tourism draw in New Brunswick is our rich acadian heritage.  Just as if an ad had featured hopewell rocks or Mount Carleton.  I doubt the purpose of the ad is to say "Acadians are all that there is in New Brunswick".  I'm sure the purpose is to feature one particular aspect of New Brunswick culture.  Maybe there's a series of ads that have been created, and the "acadian" one is just the first of several.  Maybe the second one features an english song and a big "Kings Landing" scene.  Would that make you happy?  "L'Acadie" is part of New Brunswick, a big part.  If that insults you, could it be that maybe you're just being a bit too sensitive?

Re: New Brunswick - The "Officially Acadian" province

Can you list off how many commercials are like this one that you seem so offended by? Do you have anything against the Acadian culture here in NB? I see many english commercials from NB (they even spelled things wrong in the commercial and had to pull it off air until it got fixed) why can't there be different ways to show NB as being open with culture and diversity? One commercial freaks you out but they play many english ones with the NB flag, no mention of the french culture nor the acadian culture. Those ones are fine with you right.
Just waiting till it's all over.

Oh yea, we love acadiens, thats why everyone sent them off on ships. I speak english, i am not " acadian" and don't feel like being classified as one because i live in New Brunswick.

Re: New Brunswick - The "Officially Acadian" province

I'm not talking about private business commercials that are English, or French. If a private company wants to produce a commercial that is English or French, that's their business, it's their money.

I'm talking about two commercials, produced and paid for by our government, with our money.

If you want to advertise acadian culture in New Brunswick, then why doesn't the Acadian Cultural Society produce and pay for some commercials? Our government does it for them, that's why.

I'll bet you won't see a New Brunswick commercial flying the chinese, japanese, british, or any other flag, but yet New Brunswick has those and many other cultures as well, wouldn't you agree?

I don't give a rats a$$ whats in the commercial. It's what's not in it that's my beef. As far as I'm concerned, the commercial should have a New Brunswick Flag in it, not an Acadian flag.

Having spent some time eating and cooking food I can assure you that when you coat something in sugar you do infact change the taste (and nutritional value, and appearance) of said thing.

Perhaps but you can hardly make the case that he is the only hypersensitive person on these forums. The dames, the dudes, the english, the french, the liberals, the conservatives, the homosexual, and the heterosexual are all well represented in that regard 8)

Re: New Brunswick - The "Officially Acadian" province

I just watched it again. That Acadian flag is on a boat isn't it? So it's not like it's on an official building. If it was the Jolly Roger, would that mean the Government was promoting piracy? Of course not, so why should it mean the government is favouring Acadians?

Also, the flag is there for just one second, if that.

The ad is promoting tourism in New Brunscick. The NB caption is displayed for 6 seconds.

All those nice scenes and then plenty of time to read where it all is. Seems to me like the promotion has done a good job.

I missed that in your original post.

I don't deny (never have) that acadian culture is a big part of New Brunswick. I'm not insulted by that fact. Not being acadian myself, I really don't care to be portrayed as one by my government, which, in my opinion, the ad does to all New Brunswickers.
