So this aught to be fun: Casino for Moncton

    http://timestranscript.canadaeast.com/front/article/291513

Finance Minister Victor Boudreau can't get into any of the specifics of the plans for a casino in Moncton until an agreement with proponent Sonco Gaming New Brunswick Ltd. is signed.

    Greg Agnew
This photo shows the Magnetic Hill area, where a casino will likely be built. Highway 2, the Trans-Canada Highway, runs from left to right at the top of the photo, with Mountain Road bisecting it and Magic Mountain water park in the lower right corner. The casino's likely location is located in the upper right-hand corner.

But he did let one thing slip.

"It will really be a destination casino complex, much bigger and more elaborate than what is in Halifax, for example," he says.

Boudreau says cabinet was able to get a glimpse of the casino design yesterday morning and says Monctonians will definitely like it.

"From what I've seen, I certainly think it is something that is going to fit in well," he says. "It is a very nice design."

Boudreau says they now have two months to sign the service provider agreement with Sonco, but hopes it will happen sooner rather than later.

"We want them to start and they want to get started," he says, adding that once the agreement is signed, all of the details of the project will be released.

"There are other components of this proposal in terms of New Brunswick content and some other pretty interesting things for the province and the Moncton area that we'll be able to release," he says, giving Monctonians a tease of potentially better things to come.

Although Boudreau would not reveal the exact site in Magnetic Hill, insiders say the likely location is a 70-acre piece of land on Charles Lutes Road at Mountain Road.

No building permits have yet been issued for the development.

Greg Neate, general manager of the Magnetic Hill Golf Club, says the addition of a casino in his end of the city can only mean good things for the club.

"The more traffic and the more hospitality we can offer in the north end, the better for the golf course," he says, already envisioning a partnership with the casino that could see green fees traded for loyalty points awarded to frequent customers or other such arrangements.

Neate says the casino will just be one more draw to an area of the city that already has plenty of family-oriented activities and accommodations, making it a perfect vacation destination.

Mark Jelley, general manager of Magic Mountain, doesn't expect the casino will have a positive impact on his business.

"Our customers are families at Magic Mountain, we provide a place for families to come together and have fun and we believe that casinos bring a different target market, they're not bringing in families, it's not the same market, not the same focus," he says. "We don't see it as a complementary business."

On the other hand, Jelley doesn't expect the development to have a negative impact, though he says that may depend on the actual location of the casino and its effect on traffic patterns.

The casino complex will include a convention centre facility that will be able to seat 1,500 people in a theatre setting or 1,400 banquet-style.

Moncton has been trying to get a convention centre built in its downtown for years now. Boudreau says it will be up to the city to decide if it still needs the downtown convention centre space. Another major project that has been discussed for the downtown is a replacement for the aging Moncton Coliseum.

"Maybe that is something that can be looked at as a substitute or maybe at the end of the day the city will feel a downtown convention centre is still justifiable," Boudreau says. "The province will continue to work with the city as we've always done in helping them move forward with their priorities."

Boudreau says the province had no preference for downtown Moncton versus the outskirts of Moncton or vice versa.

The request for proposals did not specify any area of the province in order to allow the market to determine the best location.

"Having received four proposals all in the Moncton-Dieppe area, it was a pretty clear indication that southeastern New Brunswick was the place to be," Boudreau says. "We didn't look at uptown versus downtown, we had a series of criteria that were applied to all four proposals."

In other words, location wasn't the main deciding factor, the quality of the proposal was.

So it is coming and with the ecclectic bunch we have here it's bound to be controversial. What do you all think about this ? is it a "den of depravity" will "organized crime" and more "prostitution" be sure to follow ? "year round economic windfall" in the form of a convention center, event location, hotel and jobs ? a "poor stupid people tax" that is sure to rip families apart ? Some combination of those ? Do you even care at all ?

I have to give people credit on the great location. It's far enough out of the way so that compulsive gamblers who lost their vehicles gambling will have to walk or steal bikes to get there. In all seriousness I tip my hat to the person who thought of putting it out on the hill. People can go to a concert at The Pope Site and win enough money to upgrade to VIP tickets along the way.Yes [Y]

Well ....I'm not a gambler, so I don't really want to voice my oppinion, but....all in all....All the Pubs, Bars, and Clubs that have slot machines will see a big drop in there gambling clints. Some of the smaller Pubs will lose tons of "sit" down clints. The clints that sit for hours pumping there hard earned cash into the slot machines. Most little Pubs are only open for slot machines, and if i'm not correct, 3 out of every 5 machines will be pulled from the Pubs. I hope the small Pubs have a good number of beer drinkers to make up for this loss. But....on the flip side....this new adventure will put alot of people to work and should increase business in the Hill area.

Ooops...i guess I voiced my oppinion .....silly me

    keep smiling

Re: So this aught to be fun: Casino for Moncton

I have to agree with arrtist. I know of alot of smaller bars, pubs etc.. that has a very small number of actual clients (other than the ones that goes to the machine and spends hours on them).

They had talked about putting it right behind the bluecross bld. I'm glad that they decided to not put it right downtown cause I think that would have cause alot of traffic and not totally the good kind either. We don't need that kind increase in traffic right downtown. I'm glad they decided to put it on teh outter edge of moncton. It will create alot of jobs, which is a good thing. I don't think it will bring the gamblers over the top as they are going to gamble wether a casino is here or not. I think it's going to be the smaller bars and pubs that are going to suffer the most. I know of a few that might have to close down due to not enough clients once the casino is up and going.

The ones that I know, that gambles, prob won't bother with the casino (unless they go days without having a avail machine to put money in) as they are generally very quiet and are out of sight. Dunno we'll just haev to wait and see I guess. I do think it will bring alot of tourist in Moncton though. So i'm not for it but I ain't against it either. (I dont' gamble or own a bar so it won't affect my life what-so-ever lol)

Just waiting till it's all over.

The only winners will be the owners and the government..

Just how far should we go to get that almighty dollar.

Now more people can become addicted to ganbling but now they can do it in style. At a casino, and not just on a stool in some dingy bar or club.

The casino shouldn't hurt the local bars. A lot of people will still go to their local bar (AKA their "get away from it all place"). The casino is too far away to really hurt small bars a lot.

Here's a machine playing philosophy I have. A small bar can survive on 3 machines just as good as 5 machines. If a person has to wait to play one of three machines most likely he will buy a beer and relax. Maybe he will realize the true meaning of a local bar. It's freindliness and atmosphere that makes a bar not the gambling machines. Just my 2 cents plus HST worth.

Wow more concerns about local bars and pubs than about an influx of the kinds of crimes that go with casinos

    Interesting.

I guesss I wind up all things considered on the "for it" side of the fence. it brings jobs, (during and after construction), more visitors, more events, probably better bus service to the area, yet I feel is "inconvinient" enough to get to that "problem gamblers" won't leave their current venues, and that we won't have locals suddenly becoming gambling addicts that weren't going to anyway.

Vegas and Atlantic City have thousands of " residents " who came to town with a dream only to realize that they don't even have Bus Fare back home.

    These are the losers.

We to will get our share of them.
