Kay Brenner's Computer Course
I don't know who Kay Brenner is or how she found my mailbox but here are some of her e-mails she sent me. I hope somebody can put the information to good use.
"7 Days to Complete Computer Mastery”
Lesson 1 - Is your computer overweight
From: Kay Brenner Date:
Dear Reader,
Is your computer overweight?
Many people look back with nostalgia at the first day they used their brand-new computer. It worked like a charm. The boot process only took about ten seconds. The Start menu and Windows dialogs appeared instantly. However, after about a year of heavy use, people often discover that their computer shows serious performance degradation. The boot process takes longer and longer. All the Windows dialogs also take longer to appear. The computer emits prolonged grinding noises as if it were contemplating if it's worth its while to carry out the task you requested.
The modern computer is an intricately-constructed system, much like the human organism. If you consume large amounts of products from questionable sources, you increase your fat intake, and quickly become overweight. You can't run as fast as you used to. The computer likewise slows down with time. Actually, there is no such thing as a certified software product for computers. The software "certificates" really only guarantee that the software product is authentic and not that it is of high quality. There are no medical organizations for computers which can certify that programs are harmless. Even the large and reputable software companies can produce software that is harmful to your system and that place "fat" on your computer. So if even the large companies are guilty of making your computer "fat", there's no telling the harm that could be caused by software downloaded from the Internet from dubious sources!
Computers, unlike humans, can be saved from their grim fate simply by formatting the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system. Though this is an option, it is far from ideal. Formatting the disks will cause you to lose all the programs installed on the computer, as well as preference settings and system integrity. But what are the alternatives? Something analogous to a private doctor for your computer, which can administer help without killing the computer can be found in programs such as PC Doc Pro. This is a complete remedy for your computer, and can be found at the following link:
Scan your computer with PC Doc Pro
If we return to the body fat analogy, what should be considered as excess fat for the computer system and how does it enter the system? The computer's Registry is analogous to our blood system, upon which all the other system parts (or organs) are dependant. This unified database stores crucial system information, which all the Windows applications poll from. There is, however, a disadvantage in this system. Usually, users log into their systems with full administrator privileges. These administrator privileges are imperative in order to configure system and network settings, as well as installing new software programs. This means that the applications that are run on the computer also receive full administrator privileges.
So each program you run can actually change virtually any section of the Windows Registry, such as the settings of other applications. These privileges are abused bycertain malicious scripts from the Web in order to change the Homepage or Search page of your Internet browser. As time goes by, the computer Registry can even be affected by normal applications from well-known vendors, which leave traces in the Registry, that can make your computer "overweight". This is also true when it come to uninstalling programs, as most software never uninstalls completely and removes all its components. Since most users are unaware of this issue, they rarely complain about it, so program developers don't have to worry about doing a tidy job with the un-installation process. They are just oblivious to the issue.
If there are no complaints, then everything must be ok. However, things are not quite ok. A year of heavy use will make your Registry considerably overweight. The Registry takes up more space and the access of the programs to the Registry becomes lengthy and cumbersome. This is what slows down the performance of the applications and increases the time it takes for them to start up. Even more adverse to your system is the fact that some of the bits and pieces left in the Registry refer to damaged or nonexistent objects. For example, right-clicking a file in Windows Explorer will cause a contextual menu to appear. Contextual means that the menu displays actions which are specific to the type of file you selected.
When a program is installed, sometimes its handlers are added to the systems menus of Windows. For example, image viewer programs will add handlers enabling you to open a file with that program("Open with..."), archive programs will enable you to manipulate files ("Send to..", "Compress with..."), printer drivers have their own handlers, etc. If, in the process, Registry entries will point to non-existing objects, Windows will search for these entries all the time. Some sections of the Registry indicate to Windows which programs to run during startup. You may not see them and so not be able to remove them manually, but Windows will try to load them every time it starts up.
What is the remedy? Start using PC Doc Pro. The program is easy to understand and to use. Clic,k the "fix" button and two options will appear. Begin with cleaning the Registry. The tool will fix the problems mentioned earlier and more. It will check broken links, device drivers, fonts, ActiveX components, analyze them and fix or delete them if necessary. This will ensure your database is unfragmented, compact, and that all links are correct, which will improve your system performance.
Scan your computer with PC Doc Pro
However, the Registry is not the cause of all evils. A shortcut is a special file type in Windows. The Desktop and Start menu are mostly composed of shortcuts. When the Desktop is loading, or when the Start menu is accessed, Windows will check the shortcuts and look for the target they are referencing. If a shortcut has a broken link, or if it's referencing an object which is no longer on your system, then Windows will spend time looking for the object, finding its icon, etc. PC Doc Pro's second option is to enable you to scan and fix broken shortcuts on your system.
The "Clean" section of PC Doc Pro helps you clean all the junk files which are left on your disks. Some applications leave temporary files on the system instead of deleting them. PC Doc Pro goes over the directories of temporary files and deletes the files they contain, or it can search for temporary files on the computer by scanning the files for certain extensions. Cleaning temporary Internet files is recommended if you are worried about security, because it deletes cookies such as autofill data, etc.
The "Optimize" section has some tools which are useful to improve system performance and enable you to fine-tune hidden settings. These settings are actually not available through standard Windows dialog or from the Control Panel. For example, it's possible to select if you want the Windows account to boot without your having to input your password, or if you want Windows to display the login screen with or without a password prompt. Some more advanced features are available in the Uninstall and Startup Entries Editors, which are otherwise not accessible using the standard Windows configuration applets.
Another tool "Boost Windows" provides continuous monitoring of the computer memory, eliminates unusable blocks and de-fragments blocks, in order to enable quicker access. If you enable this tool, it runs in the background and performs system memory optimization. This tool also prioritizes the processor to give maximum priority to the active window. This means that your computer won't pause a movie you're watching in order to perform all kinds of background tasks. As a rule, processor time is distributed equally between all the active applications, but in order to enjoy multimedia applications you will want to give these applications prioritized access to the processor.
So is your computer too "fat"? Has it had it's fill of junk files, irrelevant Registry values or broken shortcuts? If so, you can provide the treatment!

Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course
"7 Days to Complete Computer Mastery”
Lesson 2 - How to Optimize Your PC
From: Kay Brenner Date:
Dear Reader,
Is your PC causing you untold stress?
Does the simplest task take an age to complete?
Do programs take forever to startup?
Is your PC constantly crashing, freezing or slowing down?
If the answer is yes to any of the above then it's time to take control and make a change, optimize your system and improve the performance of your PC!
The following fail-proof methods for improving your PC's performance will certainly bring you results you'll be extremely pleased with.
These 6 methods will definitely result in much better computer performance. Follow these instructions regularly and you'll.
Breathe new life into your PC.
1. Empty the Recycle Bin
Empty the Window's Recycle Bin regularly. This simple action frees up hard drive space and improves the your PC performance.
When you delete a file, Windows first transfers it to the Recycle Bin, rather than deleting it totally, giving you the chance to restore the files on your computer, in case use change your minds.
For better performance, make sure you empty the Recycle Bin at least once a week, or even daily if need be. Emptying the Recycle Bin is easy to do, simply right click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop and choosing "Empty Recycle Bin" from the drop down menu.
2. Defragging your hard disk
When programs are stored on the PC hard disk, fragments of files are saved in the empty spaces nearby.
When you wish to use a program your PC has to find these fragments and piece them together, this all takes time and slows down your PC's performance.
This can be easily solved by running the Windows program Disk Defragmenter. This tool assembles all the fragments of these programs and places them back in the correct order.
Once this has been completed, the hard disk can find what it's looking for easily, allowing files and programs to load more quickly.
To start the defragmentation process, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, then select Disk Defragment. Once the program has started up, click Defragment.
The defrag can take well over an hour, which is why this usually isn't carried out too often.
For best results it's recommended to defragment the hard disk at least every couple of months.
3. Run Disk Clean Up
To improve your PC's performance, Window's comes with Disk Clean Up utility which can be used, this initiates regular maintenance tasks like deleting Setup log files, Temporary Internet files etc..
You can use Disk Clean Up by double-clicking My Computer, right clicking the 'C drive and selecting Properties from the drop down menu, then clicking Disk Cleanup. Your PC takes a few moments to conduct a self-analysis.
After the self-analysis, Windows displays a list of areas which contain files for cleanup. Simply putting a tick at the check box next to an area means Windows will clean the files there. You have the choice to leave files undeleted by simply removing the tick from the checkbox and click OK.
Your system will start the removal process - which could take a few minutes.
4. Empty the Prefetch Cache
To improve the time required for programs to load, Windows attempts to guess which files will be needed next and then loads them into a cache, a process known as prefetching. Though this process works well, as time goes by, the Prefetch Cache may become full with files which are no longer required. This causes a noticeable slow down in your Window's startup.
To optimize startup you can clear the Prefetch. This is done by choosing Run from the Start Menu, and typing "Prefetch" in the text box that appears.
This will result in a window filled with many icons. To select them all press Alt+A and delete them.
The cache will resume its regular use and gradually refill with files and links required by Windows. The result will be that your PC will be more responsive and your systems performance will improve.
5. Uninstall Unused Programs
Most people are quick to install new programs on their, however few remember to uninstall these programs once they are no longer required, leaving them unused on the hard disk.
Most programs have an uninstaller, and can be removed by going to the program's entry, accessed from "All Programs" from the Start Menu.
For programs that don't have an uninstaller, from the Start Menu, go to the Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs. It takes a few seconds for the PC to compile a full list of all the programs installed on your system.
Once this is completed simply find the program you want to remove, click it and select Change/Remove.
Since many programs leave uninstallation traces in the Windows Registry, it's very important to clean up the Registry after each uninstallation process - this will ensure optimum performance.
6. Clean up the Windows Registry
Most PC users don't realize the importance of cleaning up the Windows Registry, mainly because Windows does not come with a Registry clean-up tool.
While the Windows Registry is often forgotten about, it is probably:
The single most critical PC maintenance task.
Whenever you install a program, changes are made to the Windows Registry, which is a large internal database that holds all the Windows settings. These settings, which has thousands of entries, controls how everything in your system appears and behaves.
Regularly installing and uninstalling programs , "Messy" uninstallation of programs (traces are left behind), Hardware uninstalls which leave
entries in the Registry, Drivers which are no longer required , Spyware or other malicious programs that appear every time the
computer is booted up, may all cause Registry contentions and as a result - Slow your PC's performance.
The Registry can be edited manually using Regedit, a Windows program for editing the Registry; however this requires a considerable amount of skill and experience to complete successfully.
Not all PC users have this.
PC Doc Pro is an auto Registry Cleaner, i.e. a program that scans the Registry for all redundant files or invalid entries, locates all these entries, and then removes all the unnecessary stuff which is clogging up your system. After this is done (usually in a few minutes) all you need to do is to restart your computer to discover...
Wow! You've breathed life into your PC. It is runs
(well, almost...) like new!
Scan your Windows Registry with PC Doc Pro

Lesson 4 - How to Increase More Memory
From: Kay Brenner Date:
Today I would like to share an insider's secret and present you with:
How to increase more memory
One of the key things to making any PC run faster is making sure it hasa sufficient amount of RAM installed. RAM allows the system more temporary space to load files, making it multi-task more efficiently.
Therefore, one of the best ways to speed up your PC is to add a stick or two of RAM to the motherboard.
Unfortunately, RAM can be expensive and should in no event be installed by anything less than an experienced computer tech.
But there is a way that any user can seemingly "increase" their system's RAM, and this is called "Virtual Memory". Virtual
Memory is the process used by Windows to create a file on thehard-drive which can be used to read/write data much like normal
RAM does. So, basically, it uses a chunk of your hard-drive to act as a stick of RAM.

Virtual Memory is the process used by Windows to create a file on the hard-drive which can be used to read/write data much like normal RAM does. So, basically, it uses a chunk of your hard-drive to act as a stick of RAM.
Step 1: The first thing we need to find out is how much physical RAM you already have, to make the best use of the Virtual Memory feature. We need to open up the "System Properties" window, which will display some quick info regarding our RAM. Hold the Start key and press the Pause/Break key to open this window.
Step 2: At the bottom of the text, we can see it says "384 MB of RAM"
(it will likely be different on your PC. Remember that number, and let's go to the Virtual Memory settings. Click the "Advanced" tab.

Step 3: Now, under the "Performance" heading, select the "Settings"
button.
Step 4: And select the "Advanced" tab on the "Performance Options"
window.
Step 5: At the bottom of this pane, you see the Virtual Memory status.
Right now, it's been set at only 192 MB. This is quite low, so to change it, select the "Change" button.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 6: Make sure "Custom size" is the selected option, and then change the "Initial size" and "Maximum size" numbers. What numbers should you use? The most widely recommended formula is to have 1.5 times the amount of physical RAM available for Virtual Memory. In the case of the screenshot below, since we have 384 MB of RAM, 384 x 1.5 = 576, so that is what has been entered. Also, to prevent fragmenting (which will slow down the system), set both the Initial and Maximum sizes to be equal. This creates a static-sized page file (Virtual Memory).
Now that you have your desired settings entered, hit "Set" to apply the changes.
And now you have customized your Virtual Memory settings. Close any open windows, and enjoy the enhanced performance!

Lesson 5 - How to Jumpstart Your PC
From: Kay Brenner Date:
Dear Reader,
Kay from PCDocPro here again.
Today I would like to share an insider's secret and present you with:
How to Jumpstart Your PC - Removing Startup Programs
Have you been finding that your computer takes longer to boot? Does it run sluggishly in normal everyday tasks? Then you may have to eliminate some memory-hungry but unnecessary programs that install themselves and run in the background.
Occasionally, you should check to see what is starting up with your computer and eliminate any frivolous or harmful entries.
How do you remove these items? Most entries are embedded in the Windows Registry, and if you eliminate them manually, you risk damaging other critical parts of your computer. Fortunately, there are some very handy utilities that allow you to view and disable the different startup processes safely and quickly.
One such program that will be demonstrated is PC Doc Pro, a nifty computer-maintenance package available from http://www.pcdocpro.com. This tutorial will assume that you have a working copy of the program installed and running on your system.
If not, then download it from http://www.pcdocpro.com/download.php
(Please save the program before installing it)
Step 1: Start the PC Doc Pro program by double-clicking the icon on your Windows Desktop, or selecting the correct shortcut in the Start Menu. Allow the software to load and get to the main screen, as shown below.

------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 2: PC Doc Pro includes a Startup Manager program which can be activated by clicking the "Advanced Options" button on the white bar as shown, and then selecting "StartUp Optimiser".
Step 3: Now you will be presented with a list of programs scheduled to run every time your computer boots. Many of these won't be necessary, and can be disabled. To disable a startup item, simply uncheck the white box next to its entry. In the example below, I've decided to disable the Windows Messenger (MSMGS) and QuickTime Task programs from automatically starting.

------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 4: To finalize the settings, press the exit button at the top-right corner of the PC Doc Pro window and close the program. Then, reboot your PC and the extra programs should no longer be visible or eating up memory.
If you're not sure what to do with any of the programs in your list, then check out this website (http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php), which will try to explain the function of almost any startup program you come across and recommend either disabling or keeping its startup entry.

Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course
"7 Days to Complete Computer Mastery”
Lesson 6 - How to Stop Unnecessary Services
From: Kay Brenner Date:
Today I would like to share an insider's secret and present you with: How to Stop Unnecessary Services
Do your games run just a little too slow? Maybe you could use just a touch of extra speed. What you need to do is stop some of the many background programs that aren't required for games. Then, when you are done playing, re-start these programs to allow Windows to run normally.
There are many tiny programs (called "services") that hide in the shadows, eating away resources, and making your games run sluggishly. Unfortunately, these programs are needed for Windows to run, so we can't eliminate them permanently. But there is no reason to not just stop them temporarily. What's the easiest way to do this?
Step 1: The simplest way is to make a couple of batch files (a mini-program that runs a series of DOS commands), one for stopping the services, and another for re-starting them when you're finished with the game. To begin, open up a Notepad window by clicking the Start menu and selecting the "Run..." command. Then, type in "notepad" (without the quotes) and press enter.
------------------------------------------------------------------

PC Doc Pro will prevent this from happening by analyzing your PC System, and carrying out repairs AUTOMATICALLY, keeping it in tip top condition always. We've negotiated a FREE Health check for members. Download Now
------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 2: In the blank Notepad window, copy and paste in the following fourteen lines of commands:
NET STOP "Cryptographic Services"
NET STOP "DHCP Client"
NET STOP "DNS Client"
NET STOP "Network Connections"
NET STOP "Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service"
NET STOP "Print Spooler"
NET STOP "Protected Storage"
NET STOP "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager"
NET STOP "Shell Hardware Detection
NET STOP "Symantec Event Manager"
NET STOP "Task Scheduler"
NET STOP "Themes"
NET STOP "Windows Management Instrumentation"
NET STOP "Windows Time"
Step 3: Select the File menu and select the Save item. At the top of the Save As dialog, you will see the words "Save in:" and a box to the right. Select the drop-down arrow on the right side of the box, and select "Desktop" from the list of options. In the "File name:" text box, type in "Stop Services.bat" (WITH the quotes) and press the "Save" button.

------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 4: You now have a file on your desktop called "Stop Services" that will stop all the unnecessary services when ran. Next, we need to make a batch file that will re-start the services. To do this, repeat steps 1-3 using the fourteen command lines below and the file name "Start Services.bat".
NET START "Cryptographic Services"
NET START "DHCP Client"
NET START "DNS Client"
NET START "Network Connections"
NET START "Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service"
NET START "Print Spooler"
NET START "Protected Storage"
NET START "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager"
NET START "Shell Hardware Detection
NET START "Symantec Event Manager"
NET START "Task Scheduler"
NET START "Themes"
NET START "Windows Management Instrumentation"
NET START "Windows Time"
Step 5: Great! Now we are ready to test our batch files. Locate the "Stop Services" file on your Windows Desktop, and double-click. You should see a black window pop-up and scroll some lines of text as it tries to stop the various services. After a few seconds, the window should disappear. Now you'd be ready to begin playing, hopefully with an added boost of speed!

Depending on your system configuration, stopping certain services will require you to stop other related services as well. The batch file will confirm this, asking for your permission. If this occurs (as shown below), type "y" (without quotes) and press the Enter key.

Again, due to different configuration settings, when some services (such as "Themes") are turned off, your desktop will change appearance. This is normal, and your desktop will be restored when you re-start the services.

Go on - Breathe life into your PC today!
------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 6: As soon as you have finished playing, you'll want to select the "Start Services" program to allow Windows to operate normally. Once more, a black window should appear, scroll some text, and disappear after a few seconds.

Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course
Kay from PCDocPro here again. Today I would like to share some tips to understand and prevent - you guessed it. the dreaded blue screen of death
If you've ever used Windows, chances are you've experienced the lovely shade of blue associated with the famous Windows Stop Error or 'Blue Screen of Death.' This frequent, although less so in newer operating systems, error occurs whenever Windows senses a software, hardware or driver error which will not allow it to continue operating properly.
Often, if you're lucky, the problem will resolve itself with a simple reboot and you may not have to worry about it again. More typically though, the BSOD is a harbinger of trouble and you may find yourself faced with another and another until you throw up your hands... but all is not lost.
(Author's note: I didn't feel like intentionally making my PC crash, so I don't have any sample screenshots of a true-blue BSoD. I'm sure that most of you know what the look like, and for the rest, believe me, you will know sooner or later.)

When your computer BSoDs, it's telling you that something has occurred, either an error in your software or hardware, or a device conflict of some kind. The Blue Screen of Death, or more properly the 'Windows stop message' occurs when Windows detects a problem or error from which it cannot recover. The operating system halts and diagnostic information is displayed on a blue screen. In newer versions of the operating system, the contents of the PC's memory are dumped to a file for later analysis. All Windows XP stop errors are numbered according to the circumstances that caused the error, which assists enormously in troubleshooting them.
Unfortunately, it is difficult for most users to really understand what the BSoD is telling them, so what should you do?
Basically, the first and easiest thing to try is this: Reboot your computer, and hope it doesn't happen again in the near future. Yes, you may have lost some work and definitely some time, but you will have to cut your losses, and remember to save more often.

If the BSoD keeps happening, try to see if there is a pattern that has developed. If it continues to occur when you are using a specific program, then you may try uninstalling it, and reinstalling. If you have just installed new hardware (such as a webcam or a printer), then you might need updated drivers for the device, or possibly there is another device conflicting that could be updated. Alternatively, if the device is not completely necessary, you may have to get rid of it completely from your computer.
And now for some preventative procedures. Blue screens tend to happen more often when your computer is under a heavier load. For this reason, don't overtax your computer by running too many programs all at once. Also, you may want to consider upgrading to a newer operating system, as the older ones tend to be less stable, especially with modern hardware. As it stands, Windows XP SP2 is one of the most stable and crash-resistant versions available for home users. If your computer can handle it, consider upgrading.
If all else fails, you may have your PC checked over. They may be able to make the necessary changes, based on the BSoD messages, or might recommend a full re-install of your operating system.

Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course
Kay from PCDocPro here again. Today I would like to share some tips to secure your PC
No doubt you have heard many news stories or articles about hackers gaining access to computers and stealing personal information. Or the threat of viruses that can spread through unprotected home machines. What can you do to prevent these things from happening to your system?
One of the easiest things to do is install a software Firewall, sometimes called a "Personal Firewall". What, exactly, is a firewall? In short, it is a program (or computer in some cases) that sits between your computer and the Internet. This program is designed to carefully analyze both information sent and from from your system, and make sure it's authorized access. In theory, now, if a hacker attempts to exploit a security-hole in your Windows operating system, the firewall will not allow the attack to continue. In a similar way, viruses will be blocked from infecting the computer.
Now that you know why you need a firewall, the next question is which one do you choose from the many bundles available? Well, a highly recommended program is ZoneAlarm, available from http://www.zonelabs.com. ZA is not only without charge to home users, but it provides many different features that make it a very effective firewall. In this tutorial, we will go step-by-step through the process of downloading, installing, and testing Zone Alarm.
Step 1: First, we need to download the setup file. Type in (or simply select) the following link in your browser (into the Address Bar): http://www.neurosoftcorp.com/zonealarm.php

------------------------------------------------------------------
Depending on your browser, you may be asked to open or save the file. We can just select "Open" or "Run".
Step 2: Once it is finished downloading (which can take up to an hour depending on your connection speed), you will need to run it (unless it automatically starts) by pressing the "Run" button.
You should see the initial "ZoneAlarm Installation" screen as shown below. Press the "Next" button to begin the installation process.

Step 3: First, ZoneAlarm will ask you to enter some basic registration information. It is recommended that you uncheck the two boxes at the bottom, as you probably don't need information on Zone Alarm updates. Select "Next" to continue.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 4: To continue, you must agree to the License Agreement. Do this by checking the "I accept..." box and clicking the "Install" button.
After clicking the "Finish" button, Zone Alarm will begin copying the files to your computer. When it's complete, it will notify you and ask to start the program. Select "Yes".

Step 5: The License Wizard is now started, and asks which version you wish to use. Since we only need the basic Firewall capabilities (and don't want the program to expire after 15 days), select "ZoneAlarm" by clicking the radio (round circle) button on the right. Then press "Next".

To conclude the License Wizard, select the "Finish" button.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 6: The last wizard ZoneAlarm runs is the configuration wizard which will customize the firewall to your computer. The default settings should be fine for most users, so just hit "Next" on the following two screens, and then "Done" to apply the settings.

Once you press "Done", the wizard will take a minute and configure the options.

Step 7: After configuring, ZoneAlarm needs to restart your computer. Make sure any open files are saved and exit any running programs, then press "OK".

------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 8: When your computer has finished rebooting, ZoneAlarm will be run automatically. Since this is the first time it's been run, you will be presented with a basic tutorial and overview of the program. It's highly recommended you take the time to read the ten pages (or so) and familiarize yourself with the software. Press "Next" to flip through the different information slides.

Step 9: Once the tutorial is completed, the main ZoneAlarm window will be opened. Well Done! You have installed and configured the ZoneAlarm firewall to protect your PC.

Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course
Kay from PCDocPro here again. Today I would like to share some quick tips on hardware upgrades for your PC
My PC runs like Molasses: How can I speed it up?
Remember when your PC was a few hours old? It booted up like greased lightening and was generally chipper when loading and running your applications; everything just seemed perfect. As time moves on you may notice that your PC isn't running like it used to run; it has a lethargic, snail-like feel when running applications, and the time it takes to boot up into a usable state just keeps increasing. What's going on here?
As you install more and more applications, filling up every corner of your hard drive, subtle and invisible changes may occur inside your XP system. You may not even realize it, but a lot of applications install little hidden services that ride in from disk at boot time, residing in vital memory, hogging essential resources, and increasing the time it takes for XP to boot up. These services--a lot of them being nonessential--can range from services that check for updates for a certain application to obnoxious spyware.
The put the much needed spring back into your PC's step, your computer may be in need of more elbow room--RAM--and a few software tweaks that'll get your PC running like a champ again. There're multitudes of settings you can adjust and software tweaks that you can apply; let's get started with a popular hardware performance boost that's sure to pep up your PC.

Increasing your PC's workspace Real Estate
You wouldn't work on your desktop PC in the backseat of your car, would you? Aside from being terribly uncomfortable, you wouldn't have enough elbow room to work efficiently, performing a cumbersome balancing act between your keyboard and mouse and the rest of your peripherals. For the same reason, the less "workspace" your PC has to manage its data with, the more inefficient and sluggish it will seem.
Your PC's workspace is its RAM--random access memory. Simply put, the more memory your PC has to work with, the quicker it'll seem to operate. When your PC is taxed for memory space, it must perform a complex juggling act, constantly swapping data back and forth from RAM and the slower hard drive; this is when computing operations begin to lag.
Give your computer more "work space" by increasing its amount of RAM. Before you run out and get more memory, you'll need to check your motherboard's specs to find out what type of RAM it requires. PC32000 DDR SDRAM is a popular type along with the quicker DDR2 variety. PC's of yesteryear may still use the considerably slower PC100 or PC133 memory. If you're running XP and have less than 512 megabytes of memory, an upgrade to 1 gig will certainly improve your system's overall performance.
If you are confused about what type of memory your PC - my favorite is try out the memory scanner by Crucial Technology. Their online test http://www.crucial.com/ willl scan your desktop or even your laptop PC and determine what memory you can upgrade too. Plus you can purchase from them direct or the same type of memory elsewhere/
Installing memory on your PC is a lot than you think - and can be done typically in five minutes or less to give your PC a real booast.

Windows Classic: Eye Candy No More
XP's GUI theme is a candy-land departure from its classic Windows 95 style. It's blue, green and goofy looking. Some users like it, others detest it. Disabling XP's main GUI theme and enabling the Windows Classic theme can bring about a slight performance improvement. If anything, it gives you the classic Windows look that you will recognize right off the bat. Right press on the desktop and select the "Properties" option; drop down the "Theme" selection box and choose "Windows Classic".
Tweaking out DMA

Direct Memory Access or "DMA" is a method for hardware to request memory read/write access without bothering your CPU. When hardware can dip directly into the memory pool, your CPU is able to concentrate on other binary crunching tasks, effectively speeding up system performance.
Check to see if all your hard drives have DMA permission; giving DMA access to your hard drives can speed up disk access operations dramatically.
Use the right mouse button on "My Computer" and select"Properties"; navigate to the "hardware" tab and select "Device Manager"; look for the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" item, expanding it; right press on each of your hard drives and select the "Advanced Settings" tab; make sure that "DMA if available" is selected for each hard drive attached to your PC.
Weeding out Unused Programs and Fonts
You can decrease the amount of time it takes for XP to boot up by uninstalling any programs that you don't use. Removing old fonts can also clear up much needed disk space. Give your TEMP folders and good cleaning:

Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course
Kay from PCDocPro here again. Today I would like to share some quick tips on file recovery for your PC
Recovering Files Deleted from the Recycle Bin
It's an all too common disconcerting situation: you decide to do some spring cleaning--digital style--by emptying out your Windows Recycle Bin. With the mouse you command Windows to trash everything in your bin. A few minutes later you're hunting around your hard drive for an older copy of a spreadsheet you need to work on, and then you realize the horror. You tossed it into the Recycle Bin, and now it's gone forever! Take a deep breathe and don't stress out. You may have recourse in a situation like this; you may be able to retrieve your precious data from oblivion.
Many Windows users believe that once a file is deleted from the Recycle Bin, it's gone for good, not to be found again. This is what appears to be happening, but if you take a look underneath the hood of Windows, you may be surprised at what's happening. In actuality, when trashing files from the Recycle Bin, Windows doesn't erase your data from disk; it's still there, but it's hidden from your view, leading you to believe it's been entirely erased. Windows covertly "marks" deleted files from the Recycle Bin, so the next time data needs to be written to your hard drive, Windows knows that it can completely erase the "marked" files (data deleted from the Recycle Bin) with the new data.

------------------------------------------------------------------
With this concept in mind, it becomes possible to recover the "marked" files, retrieving what you once thought to be lost forever. Let's go over a couple techniques to prevent a data lose situation.
Prevention: A First Defense
Windows XP has a neat little feature built into Windows Explorer called "Briefcase". Briefcase is essentially an intuitive way to synchronize folders of files across two locations. Instead of working on files in one folder, and then copying over the entire folder to a new location each time you want a backup of it, Briefcase takes care of the synchronization task for you, quickly and easily.

So if you know you have a backup of your data somewhere, you'll be more confident of deleting extra copies of files, and deleting from the Recycle Bin won't produce anxiety. A good way to use the Windows Briefcase is to have one folder that you wish to backup on your PC's hard drive and a synchronized copy of this folder on a USB flash drive, completely separate from your PC's main hard drive. Knowing that you have an up-to-date backup of your data can certainly put your mind at ease.

------------------------------------------------------------------
To use the Briefcase, simply open up Windows Explorer, go to "File", "New", and select the Briefcase option. Follow the Briefcase instructions that Explorer pops up in a dialog box. With a current backup of all your important data, you'll be able to easily recover from accidental data deletions.
Recovering Deleted Recycle Bin Files
Now let's discuss a way to recover files that you've deleted from the Recycle Bin. How does one go about retrieving these files? There's a neat freeware tool called "Restoration" that lists files that have been deleted from the Recycle Bin, allowing you to recover gracefully from your hasty deletion campaign. So, let's say you've just deleted a file you just realized you really needed from the Recycle Bin. Provided you didn't just write a lot of data to your hard disk, "Restoration" may be able to find and recover it for you. "Restoration" is very easy to use: simply select the hard drive that the deleted file resides on and press the "Search Deleted Files" button.

If you know all or part of the file's name, type this in to aid in the search process. "Restoration" isn't perfect; there were several instances where this utility couldn't find a file that I recently deleted from the Recycle Bin, but, for the most part, it seems to work great a majority of the time, and it's without any charge. Re: Kay Brenner's Computer Course
Kay from PCDocPro here again. I am sure you have all been there: Your programs are hogging up the RAM and the system response time is abysmally low, making your system irritatingly sluggish!
In this lesson, I will like to share you with more tips to make your computer even faster. A few weeks ago, we reviewed how to isolate processes on your PC. After hearing great feedback, I want to revisit that with you with more insight about how to get under the hood of your PC
Ok, so you have defragged, cleaned our your hard-drive and done a registry clean, but your PC is still slow. What do you do?

Even with high-end machines, its not long before we all face the same scenario. But fortunately there are ways to get rid of such resource hogging utilities. The bottom-line simply being that, if a lot of RAM is used up unnecessarily the system performance is degraded. You must have experienced the same while running too many programs simultaneously. But then some programs load their files even while not active. This contributes to RAM usage without giving much performance.
Fire up your task manager by right clicking on the Windows taskbar or by pressing alt+ctrl+delete keys simultaneously. Go to the "Processes" tab where the currently running programs are all listed. Some of the process initiated by the user can be ended by right clicking on them. Some others are system critical processes which cannot be done away with. Windows gives a warning message along with a "Yes/No" option. Herein lies the trick of knowing which processes can be 'killed'.
A generic way of knowing so is to look it up on internet. Searching by process name on online search engines should give introductory knowledge to each and every process, sufficient for any user to make a informed decision if the process is a need or a waste.
