Abducted Sikh priests released unharmed
Winnipeg Sun
Two priests were abducted from a Sikh temple in St. Vital yesterday but were found about an hour later at a Fort Richmond home relatively unharmed.
A source told the Sun yesterday that one of the abductors was armed with a sword.
Police said neither of the victims was seriously hurt but one suffered an injured finger and was treated in hospital and released.
It was unclear last night who was responsible for the abduction or what it was all about.
Cops took several people into custody and said the suspects were known to their victims.
Winnipeg Police Insp. Steve Pilote said two adult males have been charged with abduction and other charges may be added as the investigation proceeds.
Shocked
"I suspect there will be a number of charges that go hand-in-hand with that offence," he said.
Pilote said it appears nothing was stolen from the men.
The two male priests were abducted from the Gurdwara Nanaksar Sikh temple on St. David Road in St. Vital around noon and located about an hour later at a home on Craigmohr Drive in Fort Richmond.
A woman at the home told the Sun yesterday her husband had gone with police to another home owned by the couple in the Maples, then to the police station.
She had no further comment on what happened, other than to say that everyone was OK.
Temple member Nimmi Ramgotra said she was shocked to learn of the incident.
"It's very sad. That's a place where we go to get peace," she said last night.
"I know these priests. They're very, very nice and I don't know why anyone would trouble them."
Another temple member, Nishan Warraich, said everyone is talking about the abductions.
"It's very shameful and very sad," he said. "The people who are involved are from the same community."
The people responsible for the abductions were reportedly looking for three people at the temple but one of the three was at a North End doctor's office when they showed up.
A receptionist there wouldn't comment on the incident yesterday afternoon.
"I am not going to say anything because it hasn't been resolved yet," she said.
