A Shanghai, China-based immigration-networking company will establish a Chinese community in Fredericton this summer at a yet-to-determined location.

"We welcome the opportunity to encourage new Canadians and new Frederictonians to relocate to the city," said Fredericton Chamber of Commerce general manager Anthony Knight.

"Establishing a Chinese community is a major feature of our economic-development plans for the year."

Knight said Fredericton is a global community and new residents are welcome.

He said new Canadians provide Fredericton with a richness and diversity that will promote more growth.

"KBL's efforts will benefit our community and the Chinese Commerce Centre will yield great opportunities for the city," he said.

Mary Colburn-Green, vice-president of KBL subsidiary Partnerships Fredericton, said plans are moving ahead to establish the community.

"Investments are secured but we haven't divulged a possible location for it," she said.

This week, the vice-president of KBL International Services Inc. announced efforts to develop a Chinese community in the capital city are in high gear.

"We are in the final stages of negotiations with the city and private investors to establish a Chinese commerce centre in Fredericton," said Pierre Rouleau.

He said between $1.5 million and $2 million has been secured to build the 12-unit complex.

"The centre will provide settlement services for new families coming from China," he said.

Rouleau said the proposed community will feature a Transition International English School, it will provide housing services and other settlement services.

KBL of Shanghai has already established a Chinese community in Saint John.

That community comprises 19 buildings, including a business centre, transitional housing and community services.
