Do you share food with your pet?

I was just curious if anyone does this.

I was just eating yogurt with whipcream (ya i know YUM) and I was feeding my dog little spoonfuls of it (like you would a baby) and I was thinking. Am I the only one who shares food with my dog and eats off the same utensil??? I do brush her teeth and I know that dogs mouths are cleaner than humans so this doesn't bother me.. Might gross out others though ...

well i hope your dog is dewormed because they usually lick their anus. I myself  have a dog and was givin the speech from the vet   .Not a very good idea unless you don't mind that kind of thing.

My dog can use my dishes/utensils, but they have to be washed before I'll use them again. Then again ... when my cat wants my attention, he rubs noses with me and then licks my lips, so there's probably little point in insisting they use their own dishes at this point, LOL!

So Mindy... do you share your spoon with little puppy before or after she "cleans" herself?

WWJD you would be the one to ask that wouldn't you.  Try not to be so judgemental of everyone.  Not everyone can be perfect like yourself.

A dogs mouth is self cleaning. The bacteria that is in a dogs mouth acts like a natural "mouth wash". Let me ask you this... Do you eat mushrooms??? if so you are ingesting cow feces everytime you do. Mushrooms are grown (even mass produced mushrooms) in cow manure, in fact it is large blocks of compressed cow manure when mushrooms come from a factory. Most people only "wipe" their mushrooms off yet if you look close enough you can see little specks of black "dirt" this "dirt" is yup you guessed it SH*T

As for de-worming... Absolutely. With my background in animal care I know all to well what is zoonotic and what isn't.   I just don't see how it is a big deal. I have shared popsicles with her and ice cream. It really isn't any worse than letting them lick your face or hands.  Really how many people wash their hands or face after their dog or cat licks it?

You would be surprized how many people actually do share food with their animals. Especially lickable foods.

I took care of a racoon baby a couple years back and she suckled my fingers when falling asleep.  I am sure that I probably at one time or another had touch my mouth or face with those hands before washing them.

The dog next door must feel the same way. She won't share her bisquits with me.

Re: Do you share food with your pet?

     Thought this article was interesting....

Oct. 14, 2005 — Pet lovers can't get enough affection from their pooches. And if licking is loving, they get a lot of loving.

But is it really safe to kiss a dog, considering where they often put their mouths?

"Their saliva is much cleaner and if you have a cut or anything, if they lick it — it's healing," one woman told "20/20" while being interviewed in New York City.

    Proof From a Veterinarian

To find out just who has a cleaner mouth, we asked veterinarian and fellow dog lover Marty Becker, author of "Chicken Soup for the Dog Owner's Soul," to offer his opinion.

"They raid the garbage can. You know, we give each other a peck on the cheek when we say hello, they give each other a peck on the rear end," said Becker. "All you got to do is look, watch, smell and you'll realize that that is not true."

He thinks the myth that a dog's mouth is clean stems from their practice of licking their wounds.

"And they'll be licking that wound and you'll notice that the wound heals very fast … what that tongue does is it gets rid of the dead tissue," said Becker.

He compares that tongue lashing to the work of a surgeon who cleans out a wound, and said the licking also stimulates circulation.

Go Ahead, Give Them a Kiss

If you want to give your pooch a kiss, it may be safer than kissing another human.

Becker says many of the bacteria in the mouth of a dog are species specific, so it won't harm its owner.

"So a staph or a strep for a human is not transmissible to a dog, if you were to kiss it, and vice versa," said Becker.

Bottom line — you're more likely to get a serious illness from kissing a person than kissing a dog. But since dogs do transmit some germs, Becker has some advice: "Keep the vaccines current. Good external parasite control, good internal parasite control. You're going to be good to go."

And then, he says you can kiss them all you want.

"They love us unconditionally, they make us laugh," said Becker. "If we're going to give them a little kiss to thank them for that, then that's good by me."

Mindy Mindy! What do you mean, "Judgmental"?

    I asked a question; I didn't make a statement.

    Let me ask again:

So Mindy... do you share your spoon with little puppy before or after she "cleans" herself?

Re: Do you share food with your pet?

I share my food with her whenever I feel like it.  I don't pay attention to when she "cleans" herself.

As I said before I have no issue with dog saliva.

Have you ever walked bare foot in the grass?? Well guess what . at one point or another some animal has crapped there and the chance of you getting Hook worm is fairly high.

I vaccinate and de-worm my animals. They have excellent vet care and so the chances of me getting sick from her simplely licking my spoon are smaller than being struck by a car.

And bottom line I don't really care who thinks it is disgusting.  I understand if others don't do it but I know lots of people who do.

    Way to go mindy,

I for one do let my dog eat off of my spoon  and lick my face. He is taken to the vet regulary and checked some people dont mind  while others do. Everyone to their own

Re: Do you share food with your pet?

I don't care if others share utensils and food with animals, but I for one, wouldn't do it cause I hate the smell that the dogs leave after licking what ever they licked. (I don't even let a dog lick my hand cause I can smell it ASAP) So for me to share I can't see it.  But who ever wants to show their pets that kind of affection, by all means go for it. What gets me is when you watch like AFV and you see people actually letting their pets go into their mouth (kinda seems sick to me to make out with a animal) is kinda gross to watch.
Just waiting till it's all over.
