I think there are pros and cons to everything that we do.
Pros-Increased strength and muscle mass; depending on how much you work out, this may change the way you look and provide additional self-confidence.
Cons-Lifting too much weight too soon risks injury (muscle and ligament strain and sprain and even back injury). For instance, if you do bench presses using free weights without supervision, the weights could drop on you and injure your head, neck, chest or abdomen.
I encourage you to talk with a coach, trainer or your doctor about how to get started and what to expect for your specific situation. I have injured myself many times and its not fun! But i would say for the novice machines are a lot safer.
