    " A sense of urgency."

    This is a phrase that I really have come to hate.

    Do you work with a sense of urgency? Is it a job requirement? Is it part of you job description?

    At the Great Wal of China Mart,it is in each job description. EACH.

    " Must work with a Sense of Urgency ".

    Just what does " A sense of urgency " mean?

    Well , below is one definition that I found..

    Create A Sense Of Urgency!
    by Gary Ryan Blair

    http://getmotivation.com/articlelib/articles/grblair_create_urgency.html

    An atmosphere of urgency will create an atmosphere of achievement.

    Have you noticed that the people who make things happen in this world value and share the same sense of urgency?

    High Achievers work best under a self-determined or externally fixed deadline for achieving objectives. Those who consciously choose not to "sleep at the wheel" realize that regardless of the goal being pursued, they must continually maintain a sense of urgency in order to compete and win.

    True greatness is only achieved once we develop a sense of urgency and importance of what we are doing. I mean a sense of urgency to the extent that we feel getting results and achieving our goals is a matter of life and death.

    It's tragically un-hip to procrastinate. A deadline and strong sense of urgency generates energy toward getting results. In short, they drive people to perform. Purposely put yourself in a position where you have to perform!

    One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to achieve a goal is to plunge ahead without establishing a high enough sense of urgency in themselves and others. Communicating urgency is one of the hallmarks of personal and professional leadership.

    ~~~
    Now, I can understand a doctor have a sense of emergency if at the hospital, a person is brought in from a bad accident or some type of violence and is nearing death..
    or a firemen arriving at the scene of a fire and he wants to find out if anyone is still inside the building..
    or a Policemen rushing to a " Crime in Progress"..
    But stocking shelves or waiting on customers in a department store..?
    Hello !!
    Is this really a matter of life or death?
    Ok..a Doctor, Firemen, and Policemen, made decent to good money, and lives may depend on them.
    A retail clerk, makes minimum wage .No one ever died because they could not find the right bolt, or makeup, or whatever.
    When was the last time anyone ever heard of a retail clerk saving a life by selling a hammer or toilet paper.
    Does anyone but me see the difference or the stupidity of this ?
    Not only must they work with a sense of urgency, but they are all instructed to smile and say hello to any customer who comes within a 3 meter radius of them.  When's the last time this happened to you?  3 meters is almost 10 feet!  Basically the width of any aisle.
    One can just imagine all Walmart associates trucking around the store, demonstrating a marked sense of urgency and smiling and saying hello to every customer they cross on a busy Saturday afternoon.  Say Boxing Day.  Hahahahah!
    " willing to eat bitterness "
    The Following is an excerpt from National Geographic's article on life today in China, the job market and employer expectations.
    http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0706/feature4/text4.html
    willing to eat bitterness
     Boss Wang officially opened the factory by igniting two boxes of fireworks. According to the lunar calendar, it was the eighth day of the new year, and a feng shui expert had advised the owners to take advantage of eight, a lucky number in China.
    Three days after setting off the fireworks, Boss Wang posted a handwritten job notice on the factory gate:
        1. Ages 18 to 35, middle-school education
        2. Good health, good quality
        3. Attentive to hygiene, willing to eat bitterness and work hard.
    All across the Lishui development zone, young people wandered in packs, reading the factory signs that had been posted at the end of the New Year holiday. At the local job fair, migrants gazed up at a digital board with listings so terse they read like code:
        "Cashiers, women, 1.66 meters [5.4 feet] or taller"
        "Willing to eat bitterness and work hard, 25 to 45 yuan a day, male,
          middle school"
        "Male workers 35 yuan, female workers 25 yuan"
        "Average workers, people from Jiangxi and Sichuan need not apply."
    There were no euphemisms, no apologies. If a company preferred its women to be tall, they asked for tall women. If they had a prejudice against a certain region, tough luck. At a factory called Jinchao, the guard turned away all applicants from Guizhou, the poorest province in China. When I asked the manager why, he said, "Around here, a lot of the petty criminals are from Guizhou."
    In China, minimum wage varies by region, and Lishui's is about 40 cents an hour. Yashun offered jobs at the lowest rate, but applicants poured in; there was no shortage of unskilled labor.
    Chi Ku is a phrase in Chinese that literally translates into ‘to eat bitterness.’   It means ‘to suffer greatly’, 'endure misery'.
    Sounds like Wal-Mart....
    Holey Hannah. You don't get much time for a bathroom break. I suppose they must eat a lot of "fast" foods over there.
    Remember yesterday, respect tomorrow, live for today.
    I bought some batteries, but they weren't included.
